When people ask me what might be a good option for an entry level camera, I usually say this model (whether M50 or R50) largely because it’s a lower-cost way to find out if you’re truly interested in making photography a long term hobby. Sometimes people decide on the G7x so they can have it in their pocket. Regardless of the choice, I always suggest going on line to read the owner’s manual first (and these reviews). This is one area where ‘doing your homework’ pays big dividends before you buy anything. You can learn a LOT by using entry level equipment (if you want to). And it may prove to be all you will ever need.
Great review for the target audience. Chelsea is really able to speak in terms that are not too technical and yet able to present an accurate assessment.
Yep, Canon 70D owner here, unashamedly. Still using it to learn the fundamentals of photography and hone my skills. Not in a hurry to transition to the mirrorless system any time soon.
@@thefourthquarter7429 in some cases, yes. The R50 (or R10, R7)'s AF system will blow away the 70D. I had the 60D, 77D and 80D before I entered the R world. As a wildlife photographer, I could never go back to DSLR.
This was published about a year ago, and there have been quite a few changes in the RF landscape since then. I have an R50 arriving next week, and the lens choices are a bit better now. My first lens purchase will probably be the RF16mm. Not every "serious" photographer needs a 100-500mm lens, and no one is going to use an R50 with a lens like that. But the fact that the R50 focused well and tracked subjects well with such a huge lens is good news. I think Canon is getting pretty serious about the content they put in budget cameras.
No matter how hard they atempt to lure people out of the M50 with this one, at least the M50 has amazingly solid 3rd party lenses like the Sigma 16 F1.4, that lens alone made me keep the M50 and i'm sure there will be nothing like it in the R50.
U can use all EF lenses. I wouldn't buy M50 if given a choice.between m50 and r50. Anyone who goes for M50 is ignoring the benefits of decent 4k and decent autofocus
@@The_Idea_of_Dream_Vision of course, i know that since i have 2 native lenses and 4 adapted lenses on my M50, and i meant to say that Canon will have it hard convincing M50 owners to sell their M50 and get an R50 or the R10 if they already have good quality native lenses. In my case, i would need the RF24mm f 1.8 to sort of fill the gap that my Sigma 16mm F1.4 will leave, but it's 200$ more expensive, just that lens, so i don't feel like getting rid of the M mount for the RF mount for APSC, i feel like it would be a sidegrade, not an upgrade.
@@Al.j.Vasquez if u ever needed to deliver content in 4k and you need better autofocus it's no brainer. I sold my M50 to get r6 and there is a big difference. Even if you try the RP or r you will see a big difference. You just need to test some of these cameras to get it. I have 70d and 7d2 which I no longer use for photos coz the work flow is not the same as the r6. I use them for video only.
I agree, I have a M50 since its launch (my first real camera if not counting point and shoot a decade earlier). I still have it and no plan of getting rid of it or the lenses. R50 doesn't have enough to upgrade from an M50 when you anyway can choose other things. I bought the RP last summer when R10 was out. For me it was a few EF lenses that I would like a full frame sensor for. The APS-C sensors have very high pixel density - some glas aren't super great so I was okay with loosing a bit of zoom. I was considering the M6 mark II with EVF but when switching mount I didn't find RF-S compelling.

I wish I saw this a few days ago. Just got the R50 yesterday and it's going back. I just wanted a small everyday camera and although I am far from a pro, it is a little too basic. That I can live with but the main issue I have is that it is just too small for my hands. This is the 1st review I saw that mentioned that. R10 on the way!
i'd still keep recommending the M50 for at least 2 years - its half the price used and there are still enough lens choices for beginners, especially the 22mmF2 which by far is one of the best pancake lenses - with it the m50 fits in a a jacket-pocket easily and its AF capabilities are still crazy good considering what it is. The touch screen is also very responsive.
@mipmipmipmipmip Full HD is good enough for most consumers, and that is the market for this camera. Also, smart phones are so much easier to use than cameras for video, I am just using an iPhone 13 Pro and a GoPro for my vacation video needs. The stabilization is much more important than the resolution for video. Unless you are willing to use a tripod or monopod, the image stabilation on most these cameras is neaseating and wipes out all the gains from the better sensor and lenses compared to the smart phones.
It's a direct descendant to the M50, which was also a great camera for the price. So it's no surprise that an RF version would fill those shoes well. My first mirrorless cam was the M50, which I still have despite upgrading to the R7. I'm debating whether to hang onto it or trade it in for new glass or as a down-payment to a full frame.
What a great looking camera. Honestly if this was available last year I would have seriously considered it vs. the RP that I bought. The R50 is really all I need and can't argue with the price at all. The RP is a great camera and I obviously will not replace it so soon though obviously.
I love the RP but the only thing it has over the R50 is the full frame look. That's not something to discount though because full frame is just beautiful. It's just that the RP is so limited otherwise. The R50 can do so much
Canon should open up its APS-C RF mount to third part first. This would make sense as anyone buying a R50 or R10 is a budget photographer looking for their first BIG camera. Having Sigma and others make some of their APS-C lenses would really entice people to buy these bodies, especially since Canon's APS-C RF line up absolutely sucks. Am I wrong?
I've seen some very good reviews of the upcoming RF-S 55-210. Also, the RF-S 18-150 is a solid lens, better than any of the EF-S 18-135 lenses. I still have a few EF-S lenses that I adapt to my R7 and they work flawlessly.
Thank you for saying this. Canon RF lenses are either too dark/slow or expensive. And they don't have many Rfs lenses too. Oddly, supply of ef lenses is also low as Canon is not producing ef lenses since a couple of years now.
@@mayankteo That doesn't make sense. The entire RF system is much more advanced and you don't need super fast lenses to get great results. My R7 handles low light better than any crop DSLR I've ever used, and the R6 was great in low light. Even the RF 600 and 800 f11 lenses product great results. Do you even own an R camera?
@@teej626 no, have been using Canon 700d since last 7-8 years and the low light performance was nothing great, practically unusable beyond 3200 iso. Is R7 that great, that you can use a 7.1 lens in low light conditions, without any denoise software? Any links where I can see some examples to judge for myself as I am planning to go mirrorless, and was contemplating switching to Sony because of lack of good affordable lenses with RF (EF lenses are all out of stock new where I live, and don't have any good EF lens worth keeping)

You didn't mention the new intelligent auto feature of this camera. I have owned many Canon cameras and 3 of them have been DSLRs. I recommend this camera for anyone wanting to step up from a cell phone and wants to set it and forget it. The hot shoe shouldn't be a deterent because of the market this is made for. For a lot of people I think it's a better choice than the Rebel EOS T7 for a budget camera.
Yeah I was mainly looking at the Rebel T7 when trying to decide on a budget camera to pick up but after finding out about the R50 it’s really caught my eye.
@@tacticalluke8782 if I hadn't bought the Nikon Z fc I would have considered this for a light stealthy (for street photography) camera when I didn't want to bring my larger heavier ones along. Although I wouldn't love the lens mount, I had to buy some basic lenses for the Z fc anyhow.
Apart from 30fps continues shooting E shutter, Canon m50 m50II m6 m6ii are better choices. They still support 3rd party flashes and more lenses, even 3rd party lenses, sigma and viltrox. smaller lighter cheaper EOS-M cameras are better for daily use and vlog shooting. Canon should keep eos-M series instead of making apsc EOS-R.
R50 only makes sense of you want the oversampled 4k, and/or the eye tracking for wildlife. The 4K on the M6II is not oversampled and is soft, so it is not competitive with the Sony 4K. Not sure if these cameras will really take any customers from using their smart phones. Phones have better stablization and are so much easier to use for video. The stills improvement over the M50 is neglibile for most peoples needs.
Big difference in detail between the iPhone and R50 on Tony's portrait. The iPhone looks a bit oversharpened but the R50 looks very smudged. Was the R50 shot an out of camera jpeg and what was the ISO?
I've noticed only the cheapest bodies removed all the hot shoe features. I'm glad my R7 still has it. Because my small flash I carry with it it from the 1990s. So any generic flash works on it. Plus I have one of those cube shaped adapters that let me attach a synch cord to it for older lighting set ups.
It's only the R50, as I recall. I don't think Canon has even officially released their flash for the multi-function shoe yet. The vast majority of Canon flashes use a conventional hot shoe still.
@@SchardtCinematic No, the T7 has a hotshoe, not a multi-function shoe, just a "weird" hot shoe... whereas with the R50, the shoe itself is not included, but the adapter makes it a normal hot shoe

@@truthseeker6804 bigger sensor, better dynamic range; more third party AF lenses included wide angle for vlog (viltrox 13mm 1.4, Sigma 16mm 1.4); better ergonomics; more pushable raw; better build quality; AF is on par with Canon for photo, and video AF is near to perfect. Even if you don't need EVF you can get the cheaper Z30, with even better ergonomics. The photo options are better in Nikon and the camera is a pleasure to use. Canon is smallish (could be good or bad thing) and colors and overall rendition of photos are great (but with less information in shadows and highlights and less color depth), video have more options than the Nikon.
I could see something like this if you already have a full frame RF Canon camera and want something as a backup, but the lack of lenses (especially third party) would have me looking at Fuji/Nikon/Sony instead for APS-C. Also, yeesh, at the hot shoe thing. Canon really wants to lock people in to their first party stuff.
I just got the Canon R50 and the Nisi 9mm f/2.8 RF lens. Absolutely amazing combo for shooting real estate! A huge upgrade from the Canon M50 and Laowa 9mm f/2.8 ef-m lens. I would like to use the full auto mode on the R50 for shooting family stuff, it looks amazing on the viewfinder, the settings are spot on. But I have the Nisi 9mm f2.8 manual focus lens. I can't take a picture for some reason. Is there a setting to allow this? Also wondering if you can do a comparison between 3 hdr bracketed vs full auto mode assist photos? I'm imagining closer results than expected. Blended hdr photos are tough to beat but this will make for an interesting test.
Okay. This may not be completely on topic, but I have some questions. First a little background. I started in manual focus 35mm rangefinder using two Yashica Electro GSNs with the wide-angle and telephoto adapters. Anyway, then Canon AE1 Program, Elan 7E eye-controlled auto-focus. Bought the first Digital Rebel which put 1 megapixel digital autofocus to the masses for less than $1k. Bought the EOS 50D in late 2008 and used it for 14 years. When It stopped recording photos early this year I bought my wife a EOS D80, with which she is very happy. Now , though, I am looking for a camera for myself. I read a lot of stuff on here about mirrorless "hybrid" cameras good for both still photography and video. My primary interests are landscape, nature, street, travel, architecture, and portrait. IOW mostly still. My research tells me that if I really want to shoot videos I would likely prefer a purpose made video camera. So, for my photo interests what would me my best bet?
Yeah here is the issue Rf glass is expensive, and cannon have banned third party brands from making lenses plus there is not much apsc lenses for RF-S MOUNT the product is good, but ecosystem is not there
Haha yeah actually it did look pretty damn good. No noise in the background and I think the blurry flyaways actually looked better though it's not natural.
The $39 adapter solved that issue. In the latest R bodies the pins are under the front edge of the hot shoe. Very delicate and easy to damage with dust !
Review talks more about upgrading to better lenses and even a better camera...I wanted to know more about the R50. Showing this camera with a nearly three thousand dollar lens is odd...
100% I still use my M50 mk II for video but am selling off the M6 mk II and most EF-M lenses while there is demand for them (used M6 mk II bodies and EF-M primes still fetch decent prices). I now have a Fuji X-S10 and am slowly replacing my Sigma EF-M lenses with Sigma X-mount versions: 16mm f1.4 and 18-50mm f2.8 so far. IBIS on the X-S10 means I feel more confident to try manual lenses in the future, and that opens up new adventures.

I’m actually looking for a replacement for my Nikon D7000. But with Canon not allowing aftermarket lenses, well, that is a deal breaker! Especially since I can get the Z50 and an adapter for $200 more than the Canon. If I was buying my first camera, maybe. But blocking aftermarket lenses is definitely something I would look at. Thanks! That Lumix series, but in 4/3 not full frame, has always interested me for a compact, old guy, bike riding camera. “Old guy” means I stop a lot for pics, ha ha, compact for obvious reasons. I carry my old D3100 and a throwaway lens for now.

Thank you! :) Hope you saw the second part of my comment for a video idea - comparing the last 24 and 32 MP M-mount m50 mk2 and m6 mk2 vs the current R-mount R50/R10 and R7. Same sensors with slight improvements and larger processor and features improvements. But the older cameras are available used at lower price and both systems can use RF lenses, so interesting! I wonder how things like low light performance, dynamic range and perceived resolution (sharp lens for 32mp) compare.
@@teej626 the R7 has a few improvements over the M6ii, but uses the same sensor. The R7 costs twice as much, isn’t as compact as the M6ii nor does it have as many good affordable lenses.

The R7 is basically the next iteration of the M6 without the benefit of the small form factor and lens selection of the M mount. If you’re going for an R mount camera, skip APS-C and go full frame. Does Canon even have a wide angle lens for the APS-C RF mount?
@@stonewp The R10 is the next version of the M6. The R7 would be the mirrorless upgrade to the 7DmII/90D. My first R mount camera was the R6, which is a great camera, but for what I shoot, the R7 is a better option. I've always owned crop cameras and use mostly full frame lenses. I adapt a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 C lens on my R7 and that's plenty wide for me. There is word that an RF-S 11-22 will be launched soon as well.
@@stonewp The R7 does not use the same sensor. Yes, it is the same megapixel count at 32.5, but it is a new design. And there are more than just a few improvements. The R7 is the perfect size for me. I can't use those tiny M cameras. Too small for my hands. As I said, you can use any RF or EF lens on the R7 or any R camera. There are more than enough options to choose from.
Will video jitter if you stand still without enabling digital stabilization or is it pretty stable? Not everyone is a vlogger who walks while filming! Watched 20 videos so far and no mention if you could film while standing still and get good video.
I know this was posted a while ago, but if I were interested in the r50 and you suggested the r10 for an upgrade, where does the 90D stack up? I love the 80D, but want to be able to film in 4k and have seen the 90D for around $800 used
In essence, the new budget cameras are not having the same bang for buck that was there few years ago..manfuacturers are pushing customers to buy more expensive ones.
Is it possible that APSC cameras concentrate colors so that they look more vibrant than on full frame? My cat’s green eyes popped with the Sigma 18-50 on Sony A6600, but looked more washed out on Sony A7Iv with Signma 28-70. Both had same settings, open to 2.8.
OK the lack of hotshoe mount pins is a HUGE negative, WTAF?? Entry level cameras are what people are meant to learn photography on, how are they meant to learn photography if they can't eventually do something as basic as flash lighting???
Ever since Canon discontinued the M6 mk II and it was clear the EF-M system was EOL, I've been looking for a replacement. Nothing in the R series appealed to me and the news that Canon was not supporting 3rd-party lenses was the push I needed to move on: to the Fuji X-S10. Similar size and weight, the X-S10 has the viewfinder and full articulating screen like the M50, and the dials and quality of the M6 mk II. And it has IBIS.
@@deffunc the thing is, that I have all my red line lenses already... And that's why I live under a bridge 🤣 hahahah! Nah but spending that amount onswitching brands is waaaay too expensive
@@LeopoldoManuelRamirezMena The problem is that EF-M is not compatible with RF so I face those switching cost even if I stay with Canon 😞 On the other hand, there are adapters for EF and EF-S to Fuji X-mount so it's not all bad news.
It is what it is... an entry level, budget camera. For someone's first "real" camera, this is an excellent choice. I'd never own one, but everyone needs a starting point.
Had a family of Canon enthusiasts. Everything from the AE-1, 20D, 30D, 5D, 7DII, 6D with the L series most of the way. If they start blocking the odd sigma/tamron in my line-up, they can get f'd. Not only am I reluctant to move away from SLR, I'm VERY NERVOUS of the printer/ink model that's being pushed by HP etc. If Canon aren't happy with the tens of thousands I've spent previously, then they can rot on the dung heap. I won't be heading to the R series if they're gonna be hostile.
I'm told yes! For me having an M system, I went with the adapter for it. I only have a couple of EFs lenses but they work well on my M cams. If the R / EF adapter works as well it should be a hit.
I really like it, and it's okay for my budget, but my problem with this camera is that it isn't weather sealed, so anyone recommend another alternative options?

They each have their advantages. The r50 has a viewfinder and is better for sports or wildlife. The ZV-E10 is more video focused. The Sony has way more native mirrorless APS-C lenses.
I don't care if the camera channeled Ansel Adams - Cannon can keep it. The problem is Cannon, not the Camera. If a company restricts third party lenses then to hell with them. Why support such a consumer hostile company? Anything you support you get more of.
You've never owned a business, have you? Canon (one "n") can do what they want with THEIR product. If they don't want 3rd parties taking their patented work without their consent, that's their choice. Also, I have no problem Adapting 3rd party lenses to my R7, and they work great.

Hello! Can you transfer files from this camera to a phone via usb c connection? If you use a cable with two usb c ends, one connecting to the phone and one connecting to the camera. I do pictures in tourist areas and I print them on spot. I need to be really fast. My phone is conected through wifi to a printer. I need to transfer the photos to the phone via cable. Thank you!
You should tell people that Canon claims that the camera supports UVC/UAC, which means that it can be used as a web camera via a USB-C connection. BUT... it turns out that the USB connection doesn't transmit audio - just video. (In other words, it doesn't really support UAC.) It's bad enough that the camera simply doesn't do something that the literature claimes it does. When I contacted them, they weren't interested in clearning up their documentation to reflect the truth.
