I’ve used the Panasonic and Canon app for monitoring. An iPad is a great wireless solution as well. It’s like a HUGE field monitor. It comes in clutch when autofocus isn’t cooperating. Just tap and keep shooting.

Canon 70d doesn't allow recording while wifi is on. What other way can we do it using the phone?

Thanks for another great video, Sean! I'm just starting out on my RU-vid Journey. Sadly, even though I use the latest model Nikons (D5, D850, D500) the Nikon Snapbridge app, still doesn't support live view in video mode and you can't even start/stop recording. Not to mention that none of Nikon's DSLRs have flip screens. I've heard of a few independent apps that allow you to connect a smarthpone via an OTG cable. I know you're not a Nikon guy. But I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, or better yet, see you do a video on it! Keep up the great work...

Just starting using my phone as a monitor and love it. I the DSLR controllor app on an LG G5, I can autofocus and adjust exposure while in front of the camera, which makes life much easier.

Some cameras have those rca or hdmi outputs. You can plug them to those cheap car, or security cameras screen lcds. They are not great for color, but to at least you know if you're in the right place for shooting!

There are two more options. OTG transfer over cable. A bit faster than WIFI and faster to connect. Androids have a free app for it. And then there are old monitors. You cant change the settings but can basically connect any HDMI monitor or a tv that is just lying around to your camera as long as it has the output and most do.

Good info... I'm an Actor and often must send in Video Auditions... this seems a great way to do this. I've just been using my i phone in the past but this should give a much more "finished" result... I'll probably try to figure out how to connect a lavalier mic as well to try to get rid of room boom... Thanks, again...

For Canon, is there any way to view what your recording? Or is the preview on the phone only for picture taking?

I use the Canon app for my 70D but unfortunately the 70D does not allow to record video and turn on WIFI at the same time :(

Panasonic has an awesome app. I've just started using it for my G7. Even though the flip out screen gives me great control right on the screen. I do like to shoot my videos from a few feet away. The app is really terrific for that.

This really helped because I knew Canon had wifi technology and all that but I didn't know it was to this much detail and extent. If you want a story, well I have a Canon G7X mark 1 and I was taking photos for a project, realized I forgot my Macbook's adapters so there was no port for my SD card but the photos were due in 30 minutes so I transferred the photos using the wifi app.

I started vlogging with a Leica T...but no flip out screen sucked. I had an iPhone mounted to the camera connected to the app to monitor myself....but eventually I “downgraded” to a Sony RX100 III. For run and gun vlogging, setting up a monitor before hitting record is a big hassle! If I were making films or in a studio doing reviews or unboxings, the app route would make so much sense!

Thanks for this info, I am a newbie and some years back I bought a Nikon D3200 for our daughter to take pics at events. I am learning photography now and had been using a 7" battery powered TV as the monitor. I thought that would be great to be able to use a old Note 5 I had laying around the house and found your video. I can't wait to hook this up! :)

Excellent tips and a big help to determine essential gear right off the bat. I can't help it but the entire video I'm staring at the GorillaPod and how close it's sitting to the edge of the table and thinking "No...no...no...don't hit it with your hand..." lol. I have a Sony A6500 but I can't stand the PlayMemories app. I wish they'd update it. Or maybe it's just me.

What is the best App to use an OTG cable to connect with my older camera? I have a Nikon Coolpix P530 without Wifi

I cant afford a camera right now so Im using my Galaxy J7 which has absolutely no settings to improve lighting(IN SELFIE MODE). Is there something I can use with my phone? I can improve the camera settings in "regular" mode but i cant see the screen when I record.

unless it's been changed my issue with the playmemories app is that you have to be connected to Wi-Fi with the camera and your phone. there are apps that allow you to mirror your camera screen using your phone if you have an OTG cable. I have yet to get one to work with my a7s

I loved your videos and i learned a lot from them. I have a Kodak az252 and a Haweii Honor 6x android which I want to use it as a external monitor for my camera. I tried to connected but doesn't work. Even connecting thru a HDMI to a monitor or TV. What should I do? or What can i do?

I purchased my Cannon EOS Rebel SL1 camera approximately 5 or 6 yrs ago and only used it a couple of times. It seemed so complicated, due to only using disposable, instant Polaroid, my Cell phone ( different ones over the years) and other small cameras that came with film you had to buy, put inside then take to the photo shop to have developed and the like, the most Technical camera I had ever used was the ones on my phone or Web cams that you hooked up to your PC but not to take video's. I have been extremely busy but been wanting to start a RU-vid channel for over the past 4 yrs or so but haven't done so yet. What am I waiting for, always time and $$$ for the right equipment. Well I have this Camera and I am now forcing myself to learn how to use it. I have had family, hubby and couple others, that said they would teach me but ..... shall we leave it there...LMAOOOOO Thank you for your video's, this one and some others creator's have made are making all these complicated buttons/settings a lot easier. I will be making my first Video this weekend, maybe I might even get up a couple extra hours early and film my first video before work. Any suggestions???

how to view my video on Nikon that doesnt have a flip screen but has wifi ?

I use a phone app on android along with a mini HDMI to large HDMI cable to a USB to phone and I can then mount that on my camera's hot shoe mount or have it hand held next to me for filming

I did try it, but I must say that the focus and image quality is pretty bad on my laptop :/ (plus it takes a computer and lots of place). It works for now, but I'll still be looking for a cheap dedicated monitor.

I'm torn between either the buget friendly Canon EOS 200D slr and the more compact mirrorless Canon EOS M6 that is slightly more expensive. They both have all the qualities I'm looking for when filming youtube content and some vlogs. Which do you prefer in this case? And from your experience is the quality between them noticable?
