I'm a wildlife biologist in a tropical climate. I work in and around streams and stagnant water and have to battle mosquitoes year-round. I cover up with tight weave long sleeves and long pants. I also use a buff head scarf around my head and neck to protect from sun and mosquitos. I prefer to use 7% DEET non-aerosol spray for my head, neck and ears. I reapply a few times throughout the day. I also spray directly onto my buff head scarf. I use 20% deep woods for the rest of my body, mostly spraying onto the surface of my pants and shirt. I reapply the 20% DEET about 2-3 times a day. DEET is safe and effective. Every time I've tried a natural alternative I get chewed up!

FYI, permethrin is extremely toxic to cats. We live in the woods and have lots of deer, so we use DEET and the Repel Lemon Eucalyptus products. Thanks for a great video, Dr. Dray.

@@curiousone6129 i think it depends on the weaving of the fabric but even so doctor Andrea said that even clothes can be impregnated with a specific insect repellent that is only for clothes and provide protection against mosquitoes and other bugs.

So the ecological impact of eradicating mosquitos (at least the tiger kind) is good. Scientists even say we should get rid of them cuz they're just so invasive. Also, mosquitos bite THROUGH THE PANTS and fabrics, so idk what to do. However, I haven't tried tucking my pants into my socks. I will try that. Does insect repellent really expire? The active ingredients still work past expiration, don't they?

I am deathly allergic to the citronella plant, specifically the oil the plant makes. I went into anaphylaxis last year due to tiki torch fuel. It’s so embarrassing to have to call up places and ask if I might encounter the oil ahead of time. Please remember that if you use an air born oil to be careful about it, you never know who might be allergic.

Please warn people about those tiny,, tiny Lone Star ticks with a white dot on their back. that carry Alpha-gal. One bite from a tick carrying Alpha-gal Syndrome can transmit an auto'-immune reaction. Most common symptoms is that you become permanently allergic to mammal meat and their byproducts. The allergic reaction can cause anaphylaxis, so you need to carry an Epi-pen. Cases of this are becoming much more prevalent. This infection is serious business.

My family used those Amazon bracelets recently on a camping trip. They said it seemed like more mosquitos came around them when they opened the package and put the bracelets on them before the package was opened.

Brand “Bug Soother” is good, less sticky than most natural sprays, less smelly , bought it from Walgreens, mostly lemongrass but has a vanilla smell. Works, bugs love me. I do use deet spray on my clothes and Bug Soother on my skin and face. At first I thought it felt oil free but if you spray a lot it can be a little oily.

Products with DEET are the only thing that works for me against mosquitoes, biting flies and no see ems. If I'm going to be outside, it's a must or I will get eaten alive. Not to mention using it to repel ticks. Lots of issues with those too where I live. I hate the feel of it on my skin but I put up with it. Citronella candles never do a thing in my area. I remember I scratched a mosquito bite not intentionally, actually in my sleep😂 Had to take a course of antibiotics. It was crazy. My leg was swollen and red. The mosquito bite infection is no joke 😮

I used to use Deep Woods Off and used it during bug season or when I would mow the yard. The smell from it over the past few years makes my chest hurt. Same thing happens around lavender anything.

I’ve been using brand “bug soother” its made from lemongrass and smells like both lemongrass and vanilla. Got it from Walgreens It works for me in the Southwest USA, I also used lemongrass essential in my lotion on a visit to Florida seemed liked it worked. Another trip to Florida I ate a table spoon of garlic 🧄 oil for a week before the trip for an outside wedding in Homestead in May. I didn’t get bit once and bugs love me . Good luck, hope Dr dray respond to you. (Lemongrass has a strong smell so might not be a solution)

I’m able to tolerate the citrusy essential oils so this might work. I’m pondering that Tangle Trap or is it Tangle Foot for the local yellow flies. They’re awful. Again, thanks for suggesting that product. I’ve been wanting a reason to drive over the bridge and this is the perfect one.

What if a tick drops on your head from a tree and you have really thick hair. How would you even know it was there? Also, even if you wore a hat, could the tick not crawl along the hat until it reached your head?

Ticks don't live in trees. It is tall grass and bushes that you should watch out for. Trees will not provide the number of warm-blooded bodies to feed from.

Ticks are tiny and they don't move that fast. If you wear a hat and inspect it on a regular basis, you'll be fine. And as someone already pointed out, they don't usually live higher than chest high. It is a concern for children, though! Light colored clothing is advised, so they're more visible. Wearing leggings or stuffing your pants in your socks will keep them from crawling up your pantlegs, which is the most common way to get them. Personally, I shower and wash my hair immediately, when I come home from a hike. If that's not an option, I do a careful full body check with a mirror.

I’m not opposed to DEET in an “afraid of chemicals” way, but the melting plastic is a deal breaker for me in terms of caring for my outdoor gear. I’ve had good success with picaridin, at least here in western WA. I also use permethrin on my clothes and gear after getting eaten alive THROUGH MY LEGGINGS on a hike.

Also RE: citronella, the smell can attract bears and other animals, so if you’re going to use/have them, they need to be stored the same way as your food and other smellables if you’re in bear country.

Where I live, sun up high is effective against vampires, but I, a vampire myself, tend to limit my exposure to it. A resent effective mosquito repellent in forest has also been fear of meeting a bear again. These are dark times. Thanks for hearing out my troubles.

The green bottle or silver bottle? The silver bottle is made with picaradin which she talked about. The green bottle is ir3535 which she talked about very very briefly. I would choose the silver bottle over the green one.

Deet is poisonous to both cats and dogs and can be deadly as well. Citronella and essential oils are toxic to cats and dogs. I would not risk using any of these around pets. They could inhale it, lick it off you, rub against you and then absorb it through their skin or lick it off themselves when grooming. Picaridin is safe to use around dogs, but there's no published evidence about its toxicity in cats, so it's not known if it's is safe to use around cats. 2-undecanone is used as animal repellent, but I don't know if it's toxic to them or not. IR3535 is not harmful to cats or dogs, so this is what I would use on myself. And catnip oil is of course safe for them as well Personally my cats are on Revolution Plus for protection against mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, ear mites, worms, and lice.
