Good review Stephen. Sounds like a good shoe for SDW100? I do like my Speedgoats, I've had multiple pairs of every iteration of them but I'm not a huge fan of the SG5. I find the tongue really thin compared other SGs and it's too short. It's possible for the laces to slip over the top. I'm rotating them with Saucony Xodus Ultras right now . As for the insoles, I bought some Enertors based on your review a while back. I like them but I don't find them any better or worse than the Inov8 Boomerang insoles. One downside I found with the Enertors is that they are incredibly slippery when new and take quite a few kms to 'roughen up'.

With you on the joy of softer tongues! Had tendonitis after London marathon one year with a thin tongue causing rubbing of laces on the top of my foot

Great review. Thank you. I love Speedgoats and won’t be changing anytime soon however, like the sound of these. As far as price goes, the ~£130 price point can only be achieved with those sort of sizes for very large feet. For the average size, £185 is what you’re going to pay. Also, very rare that on many Hoka reviews, is the poor durability of the outsole. I always buy SGs because they’re great. But the outsoles starts to show wear after 100 miles or so. After 350 miles, there is no grip. Obviously, this could be down to my gaite but should last longer. Anyway, great review. Well done on UTMB. 💪🏼

Been very intrigued by these for a while now. I'm a big fan if the Mafate Speed 4 (which have a cushioned tongue 😉), which I've worn for UTS 50k and Lakeland 50 earlier this year, and quite frankly- i can't fault them. The grip is far superior to a Speedgoat and, from what it looks like, the Tecton X 2. However, i have a much flatter and less technical ultra in spring of next year and feel the Mafate may be overkill for the terrain. So, that leaves me looking at the Tecton X 2. They may well be the shoe of choice! How have you find the sizing, Stephen? True to size? Love the channel, keep up the great work. Ash

Yea sizing is the same as your other Hokas. You'll find them lighter and more responsive than your Mafates for that less technical ground. Glad to see the Mafate 4 now has a lovely bouncy tongue!

They would definitely work well for that although there are lighter shoes available. I’ve also seen some people wear carbon plated road shoes for easy trails.

Have you seen the egg bounce test of these. That kind of energy return is amazing. I really feel these insoles make me less injury prone and reduce the impact on my knees. They come in one size which you cut to fit your shoes.

Initially I was going to buy Mafate speed 4. I thought it will be instant comfort just like when I bought Mach 5. But when I tried Mafate speed 4 I feel like I was wearing sandpaper especially at my heels, very uncomfortable rubbing. I hesitantly try Tecton X 2 because of the price but I immediately grew a smile on my face as I tried Tecton X 2. Instant comfort. Really worth the money😊
