My mother achieved Life Master rating in Bridge three times. She had boxes full of decks of cards she had given to her in tournaments and by friends etc, that she never used. She didn't care about fancy cards, she just wanted to play Bridge. Seems like a healthy attitude for chess players also.
@@applescruff1969 People don't buy expensive chess sets to play on. They buy them because they look cool. I've spent almost 500 euro on a chess set because it's gorgeous. But my 20 euro wooden chess set plays chess the exact same
My dad bought me an Onyx chess set for Christmas for a second I thought it was a normal chess set and then he said “that is not a normal chess set it’s fragile so be careful with it” he got it from Mexico then I searched up fragile chess sets and I found the same chess set but different color, so I searched up onyx chess set and I realized that it’s very expensive and fragile :^
I wouldn't call any of these a "best" chess set. They're all superficially flashy and appealing only to people who've never played with a truly good set.

Plastic or wood? Rough treatment or treasured art treatment? It just so happens that the set shown at the very beginning of this video is actually a great one! But it's expensive, starting at $380. There's also a much cheaper plastic version with a not-so great folding cardboard board for only $32, but I'd buy it from chesshouse.com instead since I'm in the US, not Europe. Also something I’ve noticed, if they advertise the board with black on the bottom right square instead of white, then the board is sideways and they most likely can’t be trustworthy. Sometimes I like looking up chess boards and counting how many have made this mistake. Also although I love Ralph Lauren, they sell a chess set for thousands of dollars with the black on the right, reviews saying it’s too small, and that the pieces are easily prone to falling over
Disappointed that nearly the whole video consists of still images. If I want to assess how playable a chess set is then showing its use in a game would have been much better. Also a lot more entertaining to watch.

I have it it’s great just wish it was weighted the pieces are too light and airy for me however it’s meant to be light for travel so get what you pay for I recommend it
@@Luna-ol2qy If you mean a good "tournament" chess set that strong players use in competition I would suggest a standard plastic weighted Staunton plastic or wooden pieces with 3.5 - 4 inch kings, and a vinyl roll up board with 2.25 - 2.5 inch green and white squares. Chesshouse or the United States Chess Federation carry a number of these. :)
I wouldn’t say clown sets, a chess board doesn’t need to be tournament regulations. What’s wrong with have a beautiful set, a work of art, same as the game 🤨
@@NovaPrimeXDD Having a pretty "work of art" set is A-OK with me, but classifying these artwork sets as The "best chess sets" of 2020 when in reality they're little more than decorations seems inaccurate to me.
