BEST Choke Constriction for BOSS Bismuth | Pattern Tested

In this video I pattern tested six different chokes with BOSS Copper Plated Bismuth waterfowl ammo. I tested Carlson's Sporting Clays extended ported choke tubes in Modified, Improved Modified, Full, and Extra Full. I also tested the new Carlson's Bismuth Bone Buster Medium Range and Extended Range chokes. Bismuth enables you to use much tighter chokes than steel shot without blowing out the pattern, in fact the BOSS Shotshells continued to get better and better the more choke I used. What is surprising is just how much better the tighter chokes did compared to the modified. Any one of them would be great for duck or goose hunting, but some did exceptionally well.

Carlson's Sporting Clays Choke Tubes - amzn.to/3MCww6Z
The shells used were BOSS (Copper Plated Bismuth) #4 shot, 3", 1.5oz (232 pellets), 1350 FPS. I did the test with the Mossberg 940 Pro Waterfowl shotgun with a 28" barrel. The patterns were done at 40 yards with a monopod and shot at huge paper. Almost every pellet was caught by the paper, but I counted each pellet in the core 30" circle to get the data. Choke initials were Mod, IM, F, XF, MR, ER. These results are also likely transferable for Kent Bismuth, HEVI Bismuth, Winchester Bismuth, Federal Bismuth, and others. Carlson's provided the choke tubes used in this video, thanks to them for their support.

I really appreciate the video. I want to love Boss. Loved their philosophy after hearing a bunch of interviews with Boss on the NHG podcast and some other waterfowl podcasts. Bought some and had a really bad experience and swore off it. I was using a Cremator LR which helped me shoot great with steel. Never thought to go tighter than full. Thanks to this video, I'm willing to try again with a tighter choke. Thanks.

Try a tigher choke and try their new buffered loads, supposed to be super tight. I'll test them soon. The Cremator is also a very open choke designed for steel. I asked Carlson's if I should test it with bismuth and they said no, so I never got one.

Great work man. My feeling has been a IC makes the most sense when using boss to get the widest pattern since it only takes a pellet or two of boss to drop even honkers and honestly I prefer an intact bird with as little shot in it as possible for eating. My max range pulling the trigger is 50yrds but results consistent.

It all depends on how your gun patterns! I've seen people getting 90% pattern with BOSS for them, IC is probably needed. Some have gotten 50%, they probably should tighten the choke some.

Is the Extra Full the Carlson's Turkey Choke? I have the Carlson's Turkey Choke and was wondering if it is the same as the EF? I think I'm getting a bit lost in all the marketing labels. Thanks for any insights George. You are much appreciated!

Thanks so much! The XF choke is a 0.690 constriction. The Turkey choke varies from 0.680 down to 0.640, they make the turkey in 6 different constrictions. Would the 0.680 turkey work for this? Maybe, its worth testing. The Delta Waterfowls range from 0.720 to 0.700. So their tightest is not quite as tight as the XF.

Chance2Blaze Again, great video! Only thing I want to point out is this is only demoing a 2D scenario on a fixed target. Hunting involves a moving target so unless that bird is flying straight at you, this demo doesn't really show the effectiveness of the choke and the ammo. The following video did an excellent job on comparing shot string from various ammos using high speed video. Compared to other shells, BOSS had the longest (16ft) using the same gun and choke. This is disappointing. I do most of my shooting at about 30yds over pointing dogs so I don't need anything beyond MOD choke. In fact, I hunt mostly with either SKT1 or IC chokes. From the video, this is disappointing and BOSS should fix this. The shorter the shot string, the more pellets on target at the same time. Sure, the long shot string allows for margin of erros when leading a moving target but there will be less pellets resulting in more crippled birds. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fac-03JF3GA.html

Hey thanks so much. I don't know if you've seen my recent video but I heartedly endorsed the new Surviving Duck Season series of videos. They are outstanding. I did see this video, hours after it came out. It is the best work ever done on the subject. And yes, it plainly showed that BOSS had a long shot string. However, there are no conclusions yet on whether or not that length of shot string makes any difference practically speaking. Or if any other bismuth loads are better. A 15 foot shot string at 1000 feet per second means there is a 1.5 hundredth of a second difference between the first pellet hitting and the last. For a bird flying perpendicular at 50 feet per second there is less than 0.75' difference between the first and last pellet on the moving target with a passing shot. Is that a difference, yes? Does it really make any difference? We really have no idea yet and cannot draw that conclusion from the limited data provided. It might matter. But I don't think the information is yet available to conclude either way.
@in.hindsight
@in.hindsight Год назад
@@TheNewHuntersGuide The whole idea behind Patternmaster and the Wad Wizard is their premise that the shorter the shot string, the more pellets on the target. Personally, I prefer a shot string but not a 16fter. Perhaps BOSS skimped out on quality in the wad to save on cost?
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
@@in.hindsight I've held the shot and unshot wads in my hand from BOSS, I can't tell any quality difference between them and any others. If some how they are cheaper, I'm not sure how. But in any event, we are still operating under an assumption that shot string matters. I haven't seen any data yet that leads me to believe one way or the other. And my math tells me that if it does matter, it can't be by much. A 15 foot shot string is 0.015 seconds difference at 1000 fps. 5 feet is 0.005 seconds. Even 50 feet is 0.05 seconds. That is five hundredths of a second between first and last pellet. Does even 50 feet make enough difference to matter? Can that question even be answered by anything other than opinions and marketing at this point? I don't think so. We don't know enough in all experiments and scholarly research ever done on the subject to know if this variable makes any functional difference at all in real-world hunting. I hope Joel is able to answer that by the end of his series. But it's not answered yet.
@in.hindsight
@in.hindsight Год назад
@@TheNewHuntersGuide There are a lot of videos of patterning and performance of BOSS shotshells. While it's true that the type of choke makes a difference in the result, that is true for all shotshells. Here are two videos that show the sub-standard quality of the wads used in the BOSS shotshell. The wads are shorter, leaving the front portion of the pellets to travel down the barrel with no buffer - don't know if this will damage the barrel in long term or high volume usage. Second video shows pellets are still stuck in the wad after being fired. Is this an indication of cheap plastics? I'm not a ballistics guy but these stand out to me as quality issues that could possibly explain the 16ft shot string. Other's might not care but a 16ft shot string at 40 yards is unacceptable to me. It is a quality thing. The only thing going for it is it's cost when compared to other bismuth shot shells. I really want to like BOSS but I'm seeing a "You get what you pay for." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fwCKPSxu_fA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o0I7V0rtwYY.html

@@in.hindsight If those claims are true that certainly merits investigation. But I think some of it is splitting hairs beyond what really matters. BOSS patterns well on paper, it does good in the gel, and per Joel's latest video, shot-string really does not make enough difference to matter for the hunter. If some pellets get stuck in the wad but 75% hit the paper, it doesn't really matter. If some pellets touch the barrel but performance is good and the barrel unharmed, then it doesn't really matter. If the wad is cheap but performs well, then so what. I'm not like a BOSS pro-staff member or something but I'm just looking at what makes a difference on the range and in the hunt and none of these things seem to be moving the needle in any significant way.

Boss needs to be choked down because they're using regular field wads ("Diamante" H15 wad from B&P)... My first attempt at bismuth handloads patterned 85% at 40 yards in a factory light modified choke (.715)... Would be a turkey load with anything tighter. Overall, I think boss is overrated. Their shot is deformed, and payload weights all over the place.

Have you found other bismuth brands to have better shaped shot and more consistency?

@@TheNewHuntersGuide Winchester uses a tin plated bismuth that looks good-- surprisingly.

@@saltcreekammo Gotcha, I've handled some others that were downright scary looking. In fact I'm doing a video on this exact subject.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide would be great to see you dissect some shells and see how consistent they are with powder charges and payload weight... I tore apart a BOSS 2-3/4", 1.25 oz load and it weighed over 1-3/8 (605 grains exactly). I'm going to shoot them over a chronograph soon and pattern them.

* I wish I had your choke. It would make a great late season pheasant, chicken, etc. choke, or a great pass shooting choke for anything from doves to geese.
