Rather than compile a "Top 10" or "best of" list, these playlist videos are meant to give the listener / viewer a more comprehensive view of the artist / band's repertoire. David Bowie in particular has a huge body of work, from his early folk-influenced years with a Space-rock twinge on Space Oddity to the glam-rock freak out heard on Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, the plastic soul period of Young Americans and Station to Station, the Berlin Trilogy, his hits in the 80s, 90s, 2000s all the way to his final work on Blackstar when he left this world far too soon. Playing guitar, saxophone, piano and strutting his unforgettable voice, Bowie was a consummate artist. Embodying his music in iconic characters like Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust and the Thin White Duke brought these progressive / soulful albums to life. We're just barely scratching the surface with this playlist, but give it a listen and celebrate an amazing artist.

I would’ve also thought of including Dollar Days, Time, Beauty and the Beast, Stay, and lots more. Bowie is just one of the greatest of all time

My personal favorite Bowie song is surprisingly "Oh! You Pretty Things" off of Hunky Dory. The chorus is amazing and I love the almost childish, carnival like vibe and sound to it and I love how it dances around it your head

One of my personal favourite Bowie tracks was fashion, from scary monsters, that fact that you can’t even really put it down to a definitive genre I think is truly fantastic.

Life On Mars is one of his best but when the protagonist of the song asks if there’s life on Mars, she’s asking if there’s a better life beyond the current life she’s in. It’s intended to be metaphorical.

Sweet Thing suite, We Are the Dead, Conversation Piece, I Can't Give Everything Away, Valentines Day, Quicksand, Lady Stardust, Wild is the Wind (cover I know but the vocals!) Up the Hill Backwards.I would say the first album was really Anthony Newley, but that's just me. I have trouble picking favorite songs, so many completely different sounds.Diamond Dogs is awesome one of my favorites next to Station to Station and Low.

I know that it's impossible to include everything but a few tracks I would have found hard to leave out include, Lady Stardust, The Jean Genie, Lady Grinning Soul, Wild is the Wind, Cat People (Putting Out Fire) and The Heart's Filthy Lesson. :)

Bowie's music was constantly 'evolving', because, rather than the consumate artist, he was an artiste: the ultimate musical symbiote, latching onto and capitalizing upon the creativity of a string of geniuses: Lindsay Flowers, Anthony Newley, Mick Ronson, Brian Eno, Carlos Alomar and Stevie Ray Vaughn for example. What was Bowie, himself? Essentially a chameleonlike great judge and catalyzer of others' talent. An incredibly good looking guy. And a genius in his own Fashion, his genius being the ability to Play the Media, similar to Madonna's.

Bowie's got a massive influence on my all time best albums - 7 in total - Cracked, Sane, Station, Berlin Trilogy, and his last Great Album, Scary Monsters (thanks, Bob Fripp). Heroes has travelled from "It's Bowie, I'll Put Up with It", to "absolute Titanic genius!"

Great list guys. Bowie has so many great album tracks that I prefer both of your bonus track choices, rather than the more well known stuff. Some of my picks would be: Black Country Rock, Andy Warhol, Quicksand, Lady Stardust, Fascination, Fantastic Voyage, Blackout, Breaking Glass, Always Crashing In the Same Car, Outside.

I love these playlists, always closed to my own choices , even if sometimes I would like to discuss frankly in front of a beer. Otherwise Life on Mars is inspired by Comme d’habitude from Claude Francois (don’t listen to it, it is one of our french rock singer. And as Lennon said, french rock is like english wine)!

Just to say, David Bowie is NOT copying the Kinks or the Monkees on his debut; he is copying Anthony Newley. Newley is one of the most fascinating figures in British culture pre-Beatles. He wrote many great songs including 'Feelin Good' most famously covered by Nina Simone. In fact, when anyone says a band has an English sound, what they really mean is they have a direct or indirect influence from Newley. He worked in many fields, and his career ended with a sex comedy movie he directed which ably explored emerging post-modern ideas about identity and got compared by at least one critic to Fellini! If you want to find out more I recommend the 'History of rock n roll in 500 songs podcast' which has an episode on him....

Excellent Bowie survey, probably the best for 20 min. First Bowie album i bought (early eighties) was Space Oddity, but it was not so much the title track but Cygnet Committee that fascinated me, a pretty weird and haunting one. When he died it was the first track i played in his remembrance. The following albums, Bowie fans will surely disagree, all favorites except Pin Ups and Young Americans - Low - Heroes. I am far more in favour of Lodger, Scary Monsters and even, god forbid, Let's Dance. Playlist is very good, Red Sails and Cat People (album version) would be my bonus tracks with RnR Suicide.

Saw Bowie and the Spiders in June 1973 at the Southampton Guildhall on his final UK Ziggy tour - now that was a show (got into the theatre side entrance just behind the band and right up below the front of the stage) - my ears didn't recover for a week.

enjoying your content - thank the music gods for Bowie (and bowie for saving the awesome Mott the Hoople) i'm of a different opinion as far as the 80s, lets dance may be his worst, i think he himself feels it was not his best period. i feel he got back to form with Tin Machine -

I'm pretty miffed at the little to no mention of Low songs on the list. (though I'll admit I'm a little more biased towards mid to late 70s Bowie) Low arguably was the album that started New Wave as a whole. there are such great song snippets on that record, not to mention his and Brain Eno's beautiful ambient works on side B like Warzawa and Subterraneans. Generally, pretty good list though, and yeah, its pretty tough to compile all of that bowie into that one compact collection.

@@josiplilic3384 The JTC Playlist series is sort of my version of a top list - essentially if I was asked to make a compilation album for one artist / band, formatted like a vinyl record, what would be on that album. In fact, this one actually has the most bonus tracks because Todd and I did 6 songs each, when I usually only do 6. But of course I would recommend listening to Ziggy Stardust or Young Americans all the way through - this is sort of like a sampler.
