Cooking with CTN. I love making all my own food for my backpacking and canoe trips. It always seems to be less weight than the store bought stuff. It helps so much with doing single carry ports in the backcountry. Thanks again guys, great job.

I must have missed these coming in! These videos are great! It’s a nice little extra to keep in the camp spirit while at home, gives great advice on how to do it too! I’ve only realised how straightforward it is from watching your recipes. 😊 definitely going to try both of these guys thanks for the inspiration! I love cooking outdoors from scratch but actually it’s pretty inconvenient on longer trips especially when there’s meat involved. Having some of these in my food plan will really help! Especially if I dump and need a quick meal to warm my cockles! It would be great to follow some more of these! They don’t have enough views imo but could definitely be a regular thing I would love to watch 😊😊 of course Ashley is doing all the hard part so well done more to you! 😛

Great video. I like the idea of dehydrating food for camping and canoeing trips. I have not done any dehydrating. I have done what I call boil in the bag food. Cook / Cure / Smoke (depending on the food) then pack in vacuum sealed bags and freeze. Keep in a cool pack when out camping and they are good for a couple of days. For cured and smoked meats and fish you can keep for quite a long time. This dehydration technique provides a much longer storage time for stews, soups , chilies etc. I'll have to give it a try. Now to convince my wife that I need a dehydration system. Thanks for sharing, cheers
@CanoeTheNorth
@CanoeTheNorth 2 года назад
I like the sounds of bringing smoked meats and fish on trips. That sounds awesome. We love our dehydrated meals. We got our dehydrator second hand for a great price. Best of luck convincing your wife!!!
@gpslost2068
@gpslost2068 2 года назад
@@CanoeTheNorth My wife is fully supportive, as always. Do you dehydrate meats like steak, fish, chicken? Or should I stick with dehydrating the vegetables, pasta, as you have done and then on my travels add the cured & smoked salmon, beef jerky and chicken jerky that has been vacuum sealed to the pot for some extra kick & protein. Ashley, great video. Would be interested in any other recipes you and Keenan have for camping, canoeing, hiking etc.
@CanoeTheNorth
@CanoeTheNorth 2 года назад
@@gpslost2068 Thanks GPS lost. Ashley has come up with quite a few recipes that we are hoping to make videos of this winter. As far as dehydrating meat Ashley does dehydrate ground beef and it does turn out pretty good. We have tried chicken and it didn't really re-hydrate well but we will have to work on that. Tuna actually worked ok but your whole house smells like tuna when the dehydrator is going. Hope that helps and hopefully we will get some more dehydrating videos out soon.

I made my slightly modified version of this tonight (added a few more veggies that I like, otherwise your recipe). It's so good! I am a little bit amazed that there is any left to go in the dehydrator after my "test" meal(s) were completed! 16 hours in the dehydrator just started, in two weeks I will be eating it on the Tim River in Algonquin! BTW - Your description info was great, only thing missing was the dehydrate instructions (16 hours at 135 according to your video). Thanks for sharing, I can't wait to eat this in the backcountry!

I do quite a bit of my own dehydrated camping meals as well. Going to use your recipes to add to my repertoire. What is the advantage of adding the bouillon during the rehydration stage as opposed to while you’re initially preparing it? Just found your channel. Love it! Subbed.
@CanoeTheNorth
@CanoeTheNorth 2 года назад
Awesome. Thank you very much! I think because when you make it at home you’re not going to have the same amount of liquid as you would when you rehydrate. It might be hard to get the right amount of bullion depending on how much liquid you choose to use in the rehydration. Otherwise it wouldn’t be an issue.

Hello. Yes we quite often make this same meal with ground beef. Same process for the most part. We cook the meat separately and rinse it underneath hot hot water to get rid of any fat which will spoil the meal. Tastes great when rehydrated.

So out of curiosity why use canned beans instead of using already dried beans? It kinda seems like an extra step
@CanoeTheNorth
@CanoeTheNorth 5 месяцев назад
You could absolutely use dry beans if you wanted to. The reason we don’t use dry beans is because they wouldn’t rehydrate the same as canned beans that have been cooked and then dehydrated. Breaking the fibres down during cooking helps speed up the rehydration, making it easier, and saving fuel while out in the bush. Hope this helps
