In your recommended list of Bibles, how do you decide which one is correct when they disagree? For example, Genesis 3:16: NIV - Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you. ESV - Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you. CSB - Your desire will be for your husband, yet he will rule over you. NLT - And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you ISV - since your trust is turning toward your husband, and he will dominate you. I mean this is not a small difference, it's not synonyms. It is like this in every chapter of the Bible, especially in the Old Testament.

@Casey1167, thanks for sharing some examples. Honestly, this is the kind of thing that led me to study the original languages. If you are doing that much comparison, there are a couple of ways you can approach it. First, you can follow the majority of the translations. Second, you can consult commentaries, like Word Biblical Commentary, which go in-depth into the original languages and discuss possible reasons a phrase might be translated a certain way. Usually, these commentaries will also provide a fresh translation of their own. Third, you can consult an interlinear Bible that has the original language and the English on a line over the Hebrew/Greek/Aramaic and preserves the original language word order. A study bible might be a good resource for you to utilize as well. Finally, context determines meaning, so following a translation that makes the best sense of the verses around the one in question is helpful. I hope that’s beneficial.

@@DigitalTheologian I do not disagree with any of your points, they are all valid and correct. Here I am comparing what would be considered the the top four translations read today. But to be rather indelicate about it, is that not your job as a Theologian to recommend a translation you feel is correct? Dr. Paul House and Dr. Clifford John Collins (OT work) were on the translation committee for both the ESV and CSB, yet the translations do not agree. How can I as someone that has not taking any classes in Hebrew make any determination as to which translation is correct when two men we would agree are experts oversee two translations that do not agree? I am not trying to be argumentative at all, I am trying to understand your position.

No worries, I don’t read you as being disagreeable. I heard a serious question there. I think that we have to acknowledge that no translation is perfect and every translation involves interpretation. The essentials are still clear from Scripture. Different translations may disagree on minor points, but none will deny the resurrection of Jesus, that God created the world, or that the Holy Spirit was poured out in Acts 2. With that in mind, I am fine with choosing one version for reading (personally, I tend to gravitate toward the NRSV and NIV). When doing serious study of a passage, it is essential to compare English versions and get back to the original languages if possible. When there are significant differences, I like to consult commentaries (more than one) to hear their reasons for interpreting a passage in a specific way. More often than not, I am concerned with being able to work toward general principles from passages that allow us to live in a way that honors God in the world around us. That isn’t to say differences like the one you highlighted don’t matter, they do. However, I don’t get bogged down at the translation level, especially given the ability to consult the original languages and multiple commentaries. I know not everyone has the time, resources, or ability to do that. The desire to share the resources I’ve been given is part of what motivated me to start this channel. I hope that’s helpful. @@DigitalTheologian Please excuse me, but I am putting most of my response to this on another one of your videos I am currently watching. From a practical standpoint, would you fell comfortable giving a sermon or Bible Study on Genesis 3:16 if you knew audience was equally split using the NLT, ESV and CSB? I am not sure how this could be done without telling 2/3rd of the audience their Bible is a bad translation. For myself personally, if you told me my Bible was wrong in Genesis 3 my faith in the rest of my Bible would be gone. Based on your above, would you consider yourself to be aligned with "Red-letter Christians" movement?

@casey1167, I’m not familiar with the “Red-letter Christians”, but my emphasis is always on the original languages. If I were to preach on Genesis 3:16, I would want to make people aware of the range of meanings of the text. It depends on the time allotted as to how deep I would go in discussing issues of translation. I would likely present the translation I felt best reflected the original language and go from there. There is a good chance that preaching on the curse in Genesis 3, I would not choose to emphasize verse 16 over several others. Preaching is a challenging endeavor. As someone who has been in classes where all students come with translations of passages they did and we work through them as a class, I don’t have a problem with two Bibles presenting different English translations. For me, it all comes back to the original languages. What I would want to do where modern English translations disagree is try my best to understand what was intended in the context to the original audience. From there I can begin to gain a sense for what the best meaning of the words is.
