What SSD is best for your Macbook Pro? There's loads out there. I thought I'd test the ones I have and show you their performance. The ones I've tested are:
Crucial X8 1TB (USB)
Samsung X5 1TB (Thunderbolt)
SanDisk Extreme Pro 960 (USB)
Samsung T5
I'll go through the benchmarks as well as show you some real world performance figures, as well as looking at the costs of the units and how they compare.

Hello, thank you very much for your video, it is the best I have found on RU-vid. One question, I have a SAMSUNG 860 Evo sata SSD installed in a Retina 5k, 27 inch, 2019 imac with 3.6 core i9 octa-core processor and 128 gb ram, honestly I don't feel that it really works fast, could you help me check if the installation of my SSD is correct? thank you so much. I've ~40k photos I never edited or posted online because I had them on an old slow USB HD, and they are mostly RAW images I made with my Canon 6D or Phantom Pro drone. I recently bought a newer Lacie 8TB d2 Professional to use on my home-server (henvic.dev/posts/homelab/), but I found out the performance wasn't enough for the image previews with Lightroom, and I started looking for reviews to decide which one to purchase and discovered your channel. What a great find! Thanks a lot for the benchmark!

Aha, just left a comment on the T7 review! I find the T5 is a good option for a low-cost solution in one situation - replacing a SATA and not wanting to tear a machine apart (such as having to do a screen-off installation in an older iMac). Nowhere near as fast as the others, obviously, but a good drive for the money. I paid £79 for each T5 on Amazon where they tend to hammer them down on lightning deals.

Thank you for the very helpful review! There's a reviewer on Amazon who says he experienced throttling on the Samsung X5 because it got so hot. He was transferring large files apparently. Have you seen similar behaviour? He said it effectively becomes a T5 in terms of speed!

Hi Simon - no, I haven't. Mine houses Virtual Machines sets of typically a DC, Exchange, Skype for Business and SQL - and the live stuff usually runs on it. I also do end of day replicas of the stuff too. Can't say I've noticed any slow down but then perhaps I've not been looking? I'm doing tons of fairly active stuff today restoring some Exchange databases - if that doesn't load them I don't know what will. I'll run some speed tests during/after and see if I notice anything. The X8 in this by the way, I sent both of mine back. They degraded very quickly unfortunately.

Hey I think you may want to check the names of these devices. I'm looking them up and having a hard time because in the video you list 3 Samsung devices and in the title there is a Sandisk device and the 960 is throwing me off, which company makes a 960?. Also you mention that Sandisk has a new portable out. Could you give me the name of that device?

Hi - the only USB-C ports I have are also thunderbolt ports. Just as an update, I've returned the two X8s I had - both of them degraded pretty quickly unfortunately. I'll update this and put a warning in the description.

Which would you recommend to run a virtual machine on?

Depends on the workload in the VM. Office stuff in win10 would work on any prettt much. I use the X5 for SQL and Exchange - both really take advantage of the performance.

Avoid the X8. Mine degraded after a month or so so I returned both.
