Great review, the only thing I would add is the KLR650 now has an S model witha 32.1" seat height.

Been on 2 wheels since '69 with a Sears minibike received for Christmas. Have had Hondas, Suzukis, BSAs and Victorys. Loved them all because they were the perfect bikes for me for their time. Had a love /hate relationship with my BSA Starfire 250. Quirky bike that kicked me like a mule with every start attempt, Sprayed oil from the overflow on my ankle only when it was hot enough to blister skin and tried to kill me with every panic stop because the shifter was on the right. Boy, I loved the bike :)

That's Awesome Dan! "Love the one your with" is a pretty good mantra. Every bike serves its purpose at the given time, or, we probably would not have bought it. None of mine have been perfect, but they were great when I had them. Good stuff! (I started out on a similar mini bike in west Texas on my grandparents farm and have the muffler burn scars to prove it!)

I'm totally new to off road riding, I'll admit that there's smaller capacity bikes that'll do the job as well, if not better than the Himalayan. I still have my road bike so I didn't want to spend a fortune on a bike I might not use very much. I love the riding position, I'm just over six foot, I actually love riding it and haven't used the other bike in a while. My saying is, I can go fast or go anywhere, just not on the same bike. Ride safe

Yet another entertaining review. But can I interject with an old boy rant, back in the dim and distant past when I first started out on bikes (1980) dual sports bikes were called trail bikes, and the most popular were all sub 200cc. Probably the best was the Yamaha dt 175 , 16bhp , 99kg in weight, unfortunately since the advent of rediculless off road bikes like the 1250cc BMW small bore trail bikes have disappeared. Anyhow rant over, I'm super happy with my Himalayan, ride it every day as I don't own a Car. Ps. Probably the best adv bike at moment is the Honda ct125 but we don't get it here in the UK..☹ 🇬🇧 .

I definitely remember 80's bikes and you are on the mark! Funny how fancy we have tried to become. I always really loved the old 70's trail bikes and Have my eye open for them when they pop up. Seem like a great bike to throw on the back of a camper when heading out to the mountains. Since I was in High school in the 80s in the city, I never really caught the bug bad enough to actually appreciate them and purchase. Thanks!

The lack of Cush drive is a big negative against the XR. Also, the DR650 is a better bike compared to the KLR (comes from someone who owns a KLR).

Hello there! I had another person comment on the Dr650 as well. I don't have any experience at all on it so I did not include it. They are very sought after bikes around where I live though. I appreciate you throwing in your real-life experience. That helps everyone out!

Off topic question, sort of. What kind of mopeds were those at 2:00? My wife wants a moped and those look good and probably have storage under the seat.

I think a Honda CRF300L would be better beginner bike than the Honda XR650L. You could also consider the Kawasaki KLX300. The 230/250 cc versions of those bikes may be even better for a beginner. I'm considering the RE Himalayan, but a local dealer has a leftover 2022 KLR650 that's deeply discounted. If you could get a KLR650 under $5000 (before taxes/fees), that may be a much better choice than the Himalayan. What do you think?
@swcoloradoadventures
@swcoloradoadventures Год назад
Hello there! I think you’re right about the smaller displacement bike. The one challenge is they even have higher seat heights than the KLR. But totally great bikes without a doubt. I’m think anything you buy nowadays is gonna be pretty darn good. As for a discounted KLR, sounds like a great deal. It’s a bit heavy but if the seat works for you that likely won’t be a real issue. And if you’re gonna be on the road quite a bit it would be a great choice I think. I’m always a sucker for a deal. Have fun out there!
@GLHS592
@GLHS592 Год назад
@@swcoloradoadventures I am finding out you are right. All of the bikes seem like good choices with strengths and weaknesses. None of them have glaring weaknesses, though. The weight of the KLR650 might deter me, but I've seen other people say they can be a good starter bike. I just wish the Himalayan had more power. I may wait to see if the 450 cc water cooled Himalayan comes to fruition. That sounds like a huge winner to me.

JUST SAW YOUR SHORT ON THE HIMMY TANK PADS. THE REVIEWS I READ ON AMAZON WERE MOSTLY NEGATIVE, PERTAINING TO THE ADHESIVE... PADS FALLING OFF, ETC. HAVE YOU HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH YOURS? JOHN IN NORWOOD.

@swcoloradoadventures Год назад
Hey John! Well, I saw that. Maybe I need to go in and make a review. They have not remotely moved or looked like they are coming off. Granted, I have not ridden with them in hot weather (as hot as it gets up here...). I did make sure to really clean off the tank and prep the surface well before I used them. I used 97% alcohol amply on both sides. Time will tell. But, they are still holding strong for the time being. BTW, thinking/planning on a Valley of the Gods ride on Saturday. Curious how sandy it is...Thanks!

I still think, dollar for dollar, weight, suspension, fuel capacity, range, power and torque, water cooled, the KLR is the better purchase. It's a great starter bike that you can grow with without having to modify, where the Royal Enfield is just a great starter bike that you'll outgrow quickly. Buy once, buy right. 20lb more for a much more refined and updated bike is not that much. Water cooling is going to keep that engine from self destructing off road when there isn't much air circulation. Much better highway riding can't be overlooked either. You have to get the bike to the trail somehow. The Himi is a good bike, there's just better options out there for not much more money.
@swcoloradoadventures
@swcoloradoadventures Год назад
It's a good bike for sure. Been around a long time for a reason. And it is popular. It will do well for you, no doubt. It's all about getting out there on whatever it is that fits you best. Thanks!

You gotta ride the bike to know the difference. Every bike is more than its parts. That said I really like my Himalayan over my KLR650, the KRL is much bigger, taller and top heavy, with a larger fairing. For a beginner bike it really depends on your build and what type of riding you do. There is also a big difference in gearing of the bikes the Himalayan has a real tractor factor.
@swcoloradoadventures
@swcoloradoadventures Год назад
Totally agree with you on that! As soon as the snow is off the ground I plan on doing that very thing (along with several others). The one I rode was a 2004 or 5 model. A lot has changed and now I’m really curious. It had always been a consideration when I was thinking about one of these types of bikes. Thanks!

Totally agree that’s a great option! I have no experience with one which is why I didn’t include it. There’s too much snow around for me to do an actual ride on one right now so I used what I had some experience on. If that makes sense. It’s definitely an option though. Thanks!

@@swcoloradoadventures I think you’d definitely enjoy it! I haven’t tried the xr650 yet so I really appreciate the info there. For me (dr650 owner) it was a tough choice between klr650, klx300, and DR650. There’s still times I wonder if I could’ve saved money by getting the XR and avoiding the suspension upgrades though.
@swcoloradoadventures
@swcoloradoadventures Год назад
@@ComfyDadShoes They are definitely a staple in the dual sport industry. Up here in Colorado they go for a premium however old they are. Wear it out and then get something different in the future. That's my plan. The reality is no bike is perfect and we can always wonder about the others, that's exactly why many riders have had so many bikes. I reckon that is just part of the fun. Be safe out there while you wear it out!

I got a major issue with bike reviews and comparisons, but it is aimed at the manufacturers, or their inneffective cost cutting philosophy. While most purchases are made by the heart, every now and then someone takes their time test-riding, reading up on and comparing motorcycles. Whenever that happens, factory / stock / OEM rubber becomes a major factor. Anyone who has ever switched from horrible slicks to high-end sport touring rubber, or come off of a street tyre for a set of offroad knobbies, knows: Rubber transforms a motorcycle, its handling, comfort, road noise, or in this case here: offroad stability GREATLY. by fitting questionable and cheap rubber from the factory, every comparison is a gamble. I do not know why they do not invest there and cut corners elsewhere. All of my bikes were at least 10% "better" with proper rubber, if not more.

@@benjamin.f.b. That's so true! Even the most "off-road" oriented bikes don't come stock with rubber meant to really demonstrate the bike's ability. Regardless of whether the bike is oriented one way or another, the tires seem to always want to appease every riding style and defeat the strengths of a particular bike.Thanks!

Honest review Ron! Question concerning motor oil? Is the motorcycle shops the only place to pick up 15W/ 50 Blend? I read full synthetic is not a good idea. Not sure the difference between regular oil, blend, or full synthetic. ( Concerning your Himalayan as a example) Are RE owners bringing in their bikes for regular service or are most of us, servicing at home? Thank you
