I've always found it hilarious when I hear people talking about a $900.00 dollar guitar like it's a Dollar Store instrument. Do you have any idea how many people are playing sub $400.00 dollar guitars? Not counting all those people learning on $200.00 dollar guitars. For most people a $500.00 and up instrument is a significant investment. I really hate the "if you want to play bad enough you'll come up with the money" mentality. Don't knock someone who plays on a "inexpensive" instrument. You may be responsible for them putting it in the attic and walking away instead of progressing to the point that they need a better instrument to continue. Just my opinion. Hey, I'm a grumpy old guy lol.
Hey I'm a grumpy old guy as well (over 60) plus a tad picky until 6 weeks ago jumping up to a $150 guitar was out of the question for me.I'm by no means an accomplished player and quite the reverse and owning a Gretsch was never in the picture but at $799 AU and after trying out a lot of high end name brands that were at least $200 more there was a very clear picture popping out on overall quality and play-ability...to say the least the Gretsch 2622T that I settled on was miles ahead for myself.I do understand what you are saying but in the past few days of playing it for some reason even I sound better and that's saying something.Nothing wrong with being a grumpy old guy.
I believe that there are guitar-snobs who are just like wine-snobs and zip code-snobs. they're adept at being condescending jerks. I have bought 5 guitars that cost anywhere from $360 to $445. A Mexican Tele, a Fender Mustang, a Gretsch G2622 Streamliner, an Epiphone Wildkat and an Epiphone SG pro. I paid up for my American Strat deluxe Plus. There's nothing wrong with those guitars. They all sounded and played great. I don't still have them all but each of them were just fine instruments, minus the snob factor.
Hey guys, I actually own a G5622T. It's actually the same color as 5622T you were showcasing, except it has the third pick-up with an on-off switch. I absolutely adore my Gretch! The third pick-up gives me a full spectrum of amazing tones. I play on a worship team, so we are in a really small venue, and the center block allowes me to play some pretty hot and dirty leads, without having to fight a bunch of feedback! To anyone interested, these are amazing instruments!!!
I had a stable of Fender guitars, which I treasured. Then I bought my first Gretsch. Now, I own one great Tele (a modded 2011 Squier CV 60s) and four great Gretsch guitars Country Gentleman, Broadkaster, G5622T, G5410T TriFive). I can’t say enough about the quality and construction of the Gretsch instruments. The fretwork is near flawless, and the tones are uniquely Gretsch.
I'm a les Paul person, but DAMN after watching that review I'm looking into gretch guitars. That tone sounds perfect for the kind of style I play normally
Give them a chance man. I play blues and classic rock/r&b type music and own Les Pauls, Strats, and Tele's. I bought one of the Electromatic double cuts a few months ago, and it's become a solid part of my regular rotation. It does everything well. I don't play any high gain stuff at all though so I don't know about that.
Im a Les Paul guy and just purchased a Gretsch 125th anniversary G5135 solid body with the Bigsby whammy bar and wow I am blown away with the sound. So now i want another Gretsch guitar looking into getting a hollow body 🎸👍
I never was much of a Gretsch guy until I just acquired a 5120. What a great guitar ! The stock pups are good but I'm putting in black tops because I like their tone. If you're thinking Gretsch, you wont go wrong
I have 2 limited edition Streamliners, 2 limited edition hollow body Electromatics and 2 chambered Mahogany Electromatic Jets. The most impressive feature on all of them for me ( whether you're a Gretsch fan or not ), is the consistently great feel and smooth easy play of the necks and frets.
I’ve been learning to play guitar off and one for about ten years. The Gretsch is one of the sexiest guitars I have ever seen. I had heard the name Gretsch before, but never knew anything about them. I was smitten the first I saw a red sparkle G5429T glistening in the overhead lights at The Guitar Center a few years ago. Without even playing it, or hearing it, I knew I wanted it. I was fortunate to score an almost mint condition Chet Atkins Country Gentleman for $200. However, I’m still saving up for a G5420T, because I’ve got to have something in Gretsch Orange. Red sparkle seem to be hard to find.
I think those old gretsch buckers sound better in a center block guitar. These pickups were originally in the old 5120’s and 5122’s. They sounded ok but didn’t have the twang or jangly sound that people had expected from a hollow body gretsch. But In these streamliners with center block they work well in.
I’m considering the two cheaper models you’ve demo’d as my next step off acoustic (still a beginner). I’m chasing the clean sounds and love these models. I’ve been playing Trumpet for over 40 years and appreciate a demo where I can really just hear what the instrument has to offer. Thanks guys. 👍
get this, i picked up a 5435 limited edition electromatic fairlane blue for 375$ ! yeah no shit, only 750 of them was made and 498 in the states here, and man i am here to tell you it is a chambered guitar but i love it !
I'm adding a third Gretsch to my collection. I've stayed with the Electromatic range. They're right up there with the good Epis and worth every penny! You can't go wrong with a Gretsch.

I purchased the G5420T summer of 2018 and even got it in the Gretsch orange which is unusual for me to buy anything in such a color lol. I love that guitar, sure it's not my go to guitar but it is one of my favorites!!
The Electromatic series are a great value guitars. I have G5420T and those blacktop Filtertrons are very good, can be sparkling, warm and with lots of twang. Amazing guitar. My next gretsch will be G6118t in 2 tone ivory. Smoking guitar.Too bad Gretsch discontinued the 2015 models with cats eyes holes and 3 Super Hilotron pickups. They were amazing guitars. Had to snap one of those then. Ahh. Even the newer G5622t are no longer with Hilotrons, but these new BroadTton pickups.
I'thanks for the oververview and tone compare...i thought it was top notch! Ive been contemplating an electromatic hollowbody for a while. I wish you would have had the 5422 in place of the 5420, which has a slightly thinner body and compared better to the 5622 and 2622. Would love to know your comments on the 5422.
I traded my 5420 for a 5422: much easier high fret access and even less feedback problem. I play everything from jazz to modern country on these (I purchased a second 5422 and strung it with "jazz" flatwounds).I've played PAF style pickups for decades, and they bored me to pain eventually. Filtertrons have much more personality and a wider range of colors.
i just got my new Streamliner with the V-Stop (no bigsby) and I will say this....let's hope that everyone that dreams of a nice semi hollow body guitar takes advantage of the price point before Gretsch wakes up and raises the price to about $800-900!!! Just buy it!
I have the solid body electromatic pro Jet with blacktop filtertrons 5435tg and I love it. My first Gretsch but definitely not my last! I’m thinking I want a hollow body gretsch now and I’m leaning towards the 5420 as it has a little nicer appointments than the 2420. My question Chris is as my pro Jet has the blacktop filtertrons, do you think that getting a 5420 with same pickups would be too similar in sound? I know the streamliner broadtrons are a different tone but not sure. Probably can’t go wrong with either, but don’t want both guitars to sound alike (but the fact they are different body styles should change tone?). Opinions?
How do you compare these to the Artcore series from Ibanez? Some of those start in the $300+ range. What are your thoughts between Gretch and Ibanez in this style guitar?
Maybe just an optical illusion for depth of field in the video, but the line up seems to go from a slightly smaller dimensioned body, to a mid size and ending with more of a jumbo semi-hollow body. The 2622 is $ 550, the 2622 electromatic is $ 800 & the 5420 is a $ 850 MSRP Gretsch. The electromatic update is for an understated identification, but it's hardly the bottom end of these 3 models. Evidently the hilo feature is a premium for electronics.
Hello, great video! Question: How easily do Gretsch guitars with tremolo bars accept alternate tunings? Some instruments with tremolo bars (like my no-frills Ibanez electric) really seem to dislike alternate tunings without the fixed bridge, and take FOREVER to tune because adjusting one string invariably changes the tension on the bridge, throwing all the other strings off. Thanks! :)
I'm about to pull the trigger on a very good condition g5122 electromatic for about $350. Seems like a great deal, anybody have thoughts on that model?
The streamliner is a re issue of mid 60's-early 70's. Gretsch models. Thinner body, no banding on f holes, and broadcaster pick ups... Great versatile guitar but not as popular as "classic" gretsches.
No one ever tells how the guitars are made inside which some people would like to know. some guitars only have a small center block under the bridge and that is all the have in the inside. Some have a long peace of wood running from the back to the front right under the pickups on the guitar . You can even see the center block under the bridge by looking in the side opening. It is only one peace of wood running from the top to the bottom as a brace.
Yes, at least the ones with "G Super" on the black plastic covering the pickup. The video is in error; the Super Hilo'Tron basically functions as a mini-humbucker. I own one with those pickups. No hum at all but it closely emulates the sound of the original single-coil Hilo'Trons like George Harrison's Gretsch. That part of the description is accurate.
I don't want to be disrespectful, though. After I bought my 2016 model G5622T, it was an Alamo Music demo video that gave me great insights into getting the most out of the instrument. So lots of praise for helping people get to know these great instruments better.
Ibanez Artcore Series AF75G vs Gretsch Guitars G5420T any clue? My daughter is very proficient in playing the classical guitar and I liked to get her an HOLLOWBODY electric guitar in the price range of the two above. Any suggests, are either of those two good choices? Thanks for any help.
The Ibanez semi hollow and fully hollow I prefer for traditional jazz or more dark mellow sounds. The Gretsch semi hollow is fantastic , very versatile I prefer it for country but it’s very versatile deep bass and very articulate treble
So the guy on the left (Chris) holds an orange Electromagnetic for the first four minutes of the video, but the entire time, he and the guy on the right (Cooper) talk only about the Streamliner that Cooper's holding. I was waiting for Chris to finally talk about the orange Electromagnetic but, NOOOOO, he puts it down without ever saying a thing about it and picks up another guitar. If you want to hear their take on the orange Electromagnetic, it finally starts at the 9:12 mark.
Makes my washburn diy repair guitar sound like shit. I'm stuck between the streamlined and the last model he played. The electro one just doesn't hit right for me
