The Gretsch naming actually makes a lot of sense. They all start with G, and the first number indicates the series (2 = Streamliner, 5 = Electromatic, 6 = Players, etc), and the next three numbers describe the body shape (ex: 420 = single-cut thicker body, 410 = single-cut thinner body, 622 = double-cut thin body, etc). A "T" after that means it has a Bigsby (T is for trem). A "G" after that means gold hardware. Other letters/numbers follow to denote special features like "QM" for quilted maple, 140 for "140th Anniversary", etc. From just the model number, you can tell a lot about the guitar.

I got a chance to play one at a friend’s house, and immediately knew I had to have one. And soon after I got one in an exchange with my old Les Paul Studio and unwanted midi keyboard. Never regretted the exchange for one moment. It’s a real beauty…

the Price range these are in Gretsch and Epiphone are the best value right now. I bought G5410T Rat Rod incredible guitar and I own a Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard outfit. Another great instrument. If you considering buying from Either company just pick a model and dive in you will be happy. The Gretsch G5655T QM or a G5420T will be my next Guitar

Gretsch are creating some of the best instruments across the board. I have a Chet Atkins and a Electromatic Jet with Filtertrons and they fit so many needs. My semi-hollow jazz box is an old Sheraton II, but this masterpiece in the 14" lower bout design in the Mariana green may find its way home to fill that empty hanger next to my Yamaha SG.

Perfect playing for a review. Too many reviews are done using distortion pedals which tend to make all guitars sound the same. I am more likely to buy this model based one your review

I don’t own a Gretsch but if I were to buy one this model would most probably be the one. Plenty of bling without really going over the top imo, has a beautiful tone as well. I’d really have to play one myself to know for sure though since Cooper can make a broom stick with a string nailed to it and still manage to make it sound good ahah! Thanks gents 🤙

That sounds great. I've had two Gretsch similar to this but just cant adapt to Gretsch volume and tone setup, so I built a Tele hollow with a Bigsby and its perfect simplicity. But love the sound of Gretsch.

All Gretsch's have alphanumeric codes for names. You can also partially decode what kind of guitar it is by knowing how the code works. The penguins, ranchers, falcons, etc, are all "sub names" which are far less important than the model number. Falcon, penguin, jet, etc, covers a LOT of model numbers. It's not one model number per name. Like...there are several models each of penguin, falcon, etc.

Well, yes. As is the case for strats, teles, Les Pauls, etc. That's how names work; they are overall types not a single model. But _only_ having an alphanumeric model code is unappealing. Ibanez are guilty of this as well.

@@rexrathtar3893 Strat and Tele aren't comparable. Strats don't have a model number (at least not externally). This Gretsch's name is "Electromatic Center block Jr." If they wanted to call it by its name they would have called it by that. Them breaking out Falcon and Penguin compared to the numeric model number was was comparing Apples to Oranges, because there are multiple (and have been multiple) penguins with different model numbers. I think this is just an education issue. These reviewers weren't familiar enough with how Gretsch does things to speak accurately on them.

I'm a Gretsch fan, have three including the Rancher acoustic with a Bigsby, very cool guitars. And I will always be up for Cooper's guitar playing! Lazy? Doesn't sound like it!

There a few "Juniors" in the early 2000 years. About the same body size, but full depth. An Anniversary, a Country Gent Jr and Nashville Jr. They each had the unwieldy numerical thing too. But they were COOL guitars!

I just purchased this guitar with Plek Pro feature added. I hope it's worth the money. I'm waiting for delivery. I'm not familiar with the Bigsby system. After hearing your remarks I hope I don't regret it. I must say however, I was a bit disappointed when I saw on the back of the head stock "Crafted in China". I like the way they did the inlay. Looks elegant.

A vibramate string spoiler and roller Bridge you want have any probs with tuning res stringing or stability . Nice playing clean so we can hear the guitar

I've had one on loan for 3 months in the studio. Quickly realised it had become essential so bit the Bullet yesterday and got myself one that's Turned out even better than the loaned one! I've got some high end guitars, this doesn't just compete, it pushes to the front of the studio and live queue everytime! Team Gretsch Now... 🤣

picked one up in sweet tea a few days ago. you will have to spend at least easily double to get anything close in build quality from fender, or gibson.

@@dustinglass No, I only have an older version of the G5655TG-LTD with Blacktop FilterTrons, no longer in production, also an incredible guitar. I have never seen a Broadkaster Jr in person. I was just indicating that the Electromatic may have a boring name, but the pro-version does actually have its own name.

@@Wobbz9413 Yes. Angle and shape of f-holes must correspond with body contour, size and bridge placement. Traditional Gretsch f-holes look more curved and less tilted toward the neck

this is weird how many people, even demoers are telling that on Gretsch you can dial in how much neck or bridge PU you like to hear on middle position?!? Did you ever tried that? At least up to Electromatic range? Probably not. I never seen demoers going that, just talk. Why? Because it does not work, at all! Slightest touch of either of the volume knobs back on middle pos basically eliminates that PU and you get or neck or bridge alone. Thats a fact. Stop talking BS.

Irrelevant man. I’ve got we 20 guitars and my Us and MIM made Fenders are the worst for build quality, fit and finish. My Korean Yamaha Revstars are staggering. Absolutely brilliant. Even my Chinese Epiphone are very very good.

I have this model in Azure blue. There’s a fundamental problem with the Gretsch 5655. It looks amazing in every colour. Literally every colour they make it in I would be happy to own. I want to buy this new speyside quilted model even though the only difference from the model I have is the colour. But that will make it with purchasing right ?

@David Harding I agree… I was excited to buy this when it first came out but was only offered in White/gold like a mini Falcon. It was a little blingy for me so I ended getting a blue one with silver hardware, traded the hardware and stripped and re-painted the blue. Now I have white/silver and matte black/gold, kinda like the rat rod. They are both great!

$1K is not great value for a Korean made guitar. I'm not saying it's overpriced but let's not use the Gibson ES-339 as a comparison. The Epiphone ES-339, for comparison, is $549 dollars.

@@The_Rude_French_Canadian I know where Epiphones are made. I never said they were made anywhere. Just that the Gretsch is made in Korea by World Instrument Music and $1K is not a great value for any mass produced 3rd party guitar like this. And comparing it to a Gibson is foolish. If you think being made by an outsourced company makes it better than an Epiphone simply because the Epiphone is made in China (by a wholly owned Gibson company) then pay twice as much.
