Probably one from a planet where food is plentiful or more nutrient-dense. Hummingbirds have such a high metabolism they'll starve to death over the course of 2 hours.
After actually listening to the story, it's likely the "death by starvation" was a metric of the simulation, and they didn't actually die. Kinda like how most survival games don't wait 3 weeks in-game to make you start taking damage from starvation either.

In 1989 members of the 7th ID at Ft. Ord were pit against the Australian, British and Canadian militaries simultaneously in War Games. On day 1 we took down their TOC in under an hour from start and they had to "hard reset" the entire exchange. They were a good bunch, took their losses with dignity and we all had some good laughs after.
I do find it interesting how we put self constrained limits on ourselves. There are so many videos out there of beating X game without Y. We have speed runners, pacifist plays, etc.where the goal is to beat the game, but under harsher and more difficult criteria. That is not logical, why would any species give themselves more requirements and make it harder for them? And it's not just games, we do it in dating, war, work, whatever. Write a story without using a letter. Live your life in the exact same way every day. Even killers will purposely leave clues to the police. It's really bizarre.
Just wildly inefficient, or doesn't have much storage for the energy it uses? Solar Power doesn't help if it's draining faster than it can gather the energy.

My humble addition: Kakalaw are an arboreal species that has, for a lot of their prehistory as well as well as modern sports history, relied on stealth and stealing resources from other clans or predators, such as fruit or small lifeforms... A game was requested mimicking a sport from their own planet. Dense playing area mimicking a complex parkour course among the trees, with poles, swings and webs that allow for plenty of climbing as well as blending in with the surroundings. Each team has a beacon they need to steal and bring back to their home field. They were rather sure of their victory. Humans descended from arboreal apes, but their species abandoned that path in exchange for sturdy endurance and bipedal posture. Seems like a recipe for victory? Well... Turns out they have had practice with that... Sure, humans could never match the Kakalaw speed and dexterity, some areas were impossible for them to access... And yet, they won 5-1. They did something different. They devided roles. At first, the tree-climbers were under the impression that humans are cheating, because they could not counter their playstyle, they were completely unprepared... But no rules said you couldn't play defensively. And that's what humans did, some would "Camp" in hard to access areas and take out unsuspecting targets from a hidden position. "Fucking campers". To the Kakalaw, it looked as if their teammates were being taken out by an invisible force. Some humans stayed in their base and guarded their beacon. And since the other team was used to partisant-style divide and conquer games, they were only spreading themselves thin and four games ended with humans winning by default, with the entire enemy team out of the game. And couldn't fathom how come they keep losing despite humans giving no crap about being stealthy, often shouting their position just to alert their own teammates that they're alive. They weren't "Cheating". It's just that nobody thought of that before...
