@@EdwardWester That's honestly still the number 1 law on earth. Just be so powerful that no one wants to fuck with you. There will always be people trying their luck, or are so overcome by brainwashing or emotions that they throw the likely danger to the wind. But in general it holds up. It's what, ultimately and for the most part, makes a country's laws work. Because most people don't want to try and fuck with the government and bring down it's wrath on themselves. I bet that if the military and police force didn't exist, and all the government could do was wag it's finger at people breaking the law, a LOT more people would be breaking it. Not everyone of course. Plenty of people that are innately a good person. But still a lot more than what we see now.

I think that we underestimate how many species are like humanity. Humanity got this far because of its nature, with unfortunate side effects that we have to deal with to advance further, and it is like this because thats what evolution decided worked best for our species. Other species would probably evolve similarly, nature isn't a beautiful garden, its a war for survival that every early human had to fight, and other species would as well.

That's the whole point of these stories though. They're sci-fi, with the one common theme that survival of the fittest, having so many highly dangerous predators, and having an ever changing climate, are actually NOT that common in the galaxy. It doesn't have to be realistic (though honestly we don't know what is and isn't realistic since we only have a sample size of 1; our planet) for the stories to "make sense". All you have to do is go into reading/listening to these stories with the premise that earth is a "death world", or at the very least that humans are especially good at conflict in some way. (be that physical, economical, mental, or whatever else kind of conflict.)

Thats how life on earth evolved, its possible that all other life in the universe evolved exactly like us. Having to adapt to rough situations and fight to survive. Its also possible all other life evolved on utopias, where there is zero harsh climate or terrain, enough resources that every species on the planet can prosper without fighting, and for that reason never needed to fight for survival and they could solely focus on progression technologically. With how massive the universe is, its likely that any way you can imagine life springing into existence has happened

@fancyclown6863 there might be an issue with that idea. If a planet is a utopia where every species has enough recourses, what point is there in evolving intelligence at all? After all you have no need for it, when you can get everything you need without it already. Heck intelligence is a gamble in general. Strength, toughness, speed, or other such traits will more easily keep you going in the evolutionary arms race. And we had to give all of those up so our evolution could focus on brain power, which takes a lot of energy to develop and maintain.

This is how I view the different armies across the world. I don't like them. I think they should all just disappear and for everyone to get along. But I'm not blind to reality. There will always be a chance people, organisations , or leaders that need to be stopped arise. So having a military is needed. As the title: An unfortunate necessity.

This kinda reminds me of the new American Abrams X that they revealed in recent times. Sure this MBTX may not see battles in the long distant future, but the mere process of always innovating and improving prevents a military force from becoming atrophied. When looking at the military of the US, it's not the weapons, the vehicles, or people serving in the armed forces you should be scared of, but the logistical network they've developed constantly over decades across the globe. That is what one should be shitting bricks over, lol.

Anyone remember a story where some self-proclaimed warrior race is chasing a trader vessel and the two end up in "unknown space ". We contact them and tell them to leave but the Warriors, thinking they're hot shit, try and shoot down our ships but they barely scratched the paint despite us having no shielding. We then one-shot their strongest ship in their fleet like swatting an ant. The lead Warrior guy says something like: Warriors! Prepare for glorious combat!! Our battle will be legendary!! Then they're all, aside from the lead bad guy and innocent trader, mowed down like grass 😂😂 I can't remember what it's called but I know NN has done a video about it. Edit: Unintended First Contact.
