Here's a fun trick for traveling: there are plenty of non metallic belts available. Perfect if the day involves going through places where they ask to remove everything metallic.

"Endless hand wringing" seems like a bit of an exaggeration, doesn't it? The idea that something is keeping Earth from meeting aliens is going to be inherently compelling for some people, and it works well for HFY since it easily leads to there being something different or special about humanity or our circumstances.

No you don't understand statistics. We have at least one confirmed life bearing planet capable of consciousness bearing lifeforms that can inturn use abstraction to plan in hypothetical terms before trying it. If even one other example exists, statistically life should be far more abundant than the initial axioms would imply. Granted the title of paradox is just grandiose phrasing but because the requirements of the life are right conditional probability tests in a row rather than the simplicity of just one. Not because the observation of probable statistics was inaccurate. However it's going to inevitably be a core trope of sci-fi storytelling because fear of the unknown is the common response to infinite void. Space can just do that to minds not used to true nothingness, it's more a horror trope than relying upon the actual science. I will however absolutely grant that the stories desperately trying to make idiotic conspiracies all real in their narrative just strains the willing suspension of disbelief.

Like most government bodies its probably best we take them as a joke, no telling if what they work on could in fact like in this story drive a normal human mad. Think MIB, "A person is smart, but people are dumb." or something like that. The most basic idea of Space Force is have a task force specifically designed to do research on Space Phenomena probably an expansion of the Area51 staffing.
