Best hiking route up Snowdon Summit - Trekking the Watkin path

Looking for the best hiking route up Snowdon in the Snowdonia National Park? The Watkin Path to the summit and to Crib Goch is by far my favourite route to date!
Snowdon is the tallest mountain in Wales, standing at over 1000 metres high in elevation. Most of the year it's shrouded in cloud with poor visibility, but this day was impeccably clear.
On this hike, I take you up the Watkin path, a hard route to the Snowdon Horseshoe where huge peaks tower over the glacial basin.
Then onward up to the summit over steep and rocky trails where I came across a helicopter delivering payloads of stone to engineers on the side of the mountain rebuilding the steps of the Watkin path leading to the top of Snowdon.
From there, I take you to the summit and past the Snowdon Railway to Crib Goch where incredible views of the Glaslyn and Llyn Lydaw lakes spoiled me.
I then make my way down to the water's edge for a beautiful sunset over the national park before hitchhiking back to the trailhead.
During the week, taxis are very few and far between so I recommend attempting a circuit of this if you drove, however the days are so short in February, I ran out of time as it's unsafe to walk the road back to Llyn Gwynant and many people have lost their lives, which is what the kind gentlemen who both gave me a ride continued to tell me.
Thanks for watching and happy hiking! This is one of the best things to do in Wales.

How much longer does it take you hiking when you intend to video tape it and turn it into a vlog? I see So many people with clips of them walking towards/away from the camera, and knowing they have to come back and forth to retrieve it each time- seems exhausting! Must take a lot of dedication.

Thanks for your question and it’s a really good one. I vlogged my 100 mile hike of the Soth Downs Way and recorded my GPS and it added about 3 miles to the trip! So yes, without stopping this walk up Snowdon should’ve taken about 7 hours, but it took me almost 9 to get the shots I wanted. Thanks for your kind words and for watching.

Hi There! Love the video! You just got a new subscriber. I am planning to go to Snowdon over theMay Bank Holiday. This route looks really great. Could you please advise how long does it take to hike the whole route? Is the path dangerous - some videos suggest that Crib Groch can be quite challenging? Also can you suggest where would it best to stay over if attempting this route? Many thanks!
@thetrailhunter4469
@thetrailhunter4469 5 лет назад
Hey glad you liked the video. Haha cheers! Route took me 9 hours. But I reckon it should take less for most because I was filming. If you do the entire Cryb Goch knife edge it is a very thin and high ridge line heading east to Pen y Pas. Places to stay are probably best to go to Llanberis. Toughest part of this route was where they were building the path using the helicopter. It’s very loose rock and dust. I’d say the Watkin path directly south of Glaslyn on the map. Hope that helps! Happy hiking!

Hello there, i really enjoyed your video. Will be taking the watkin path next week. I heard there are repairs of the track so it wouldn't be too difficult. I just want to know if there is a proper track like stairs and you dont have to scramble along the watkin path.
@thetrailhunter4469
@thetrailhunter4469 5 лет назад
Hi Alfredo. Toward the summit where the helicopter was they were building the path, however just before that point it’s lots of bouldering up loose rock and gravel. Unsure what the condition is at the moment though as they may have finished the path. Thanks for watching!
