This hike is an out-and-back hike, going 5 miles each way. Since we hiked from the campground instead of the trailhead, it was a little longer at a total of 11 miles. The elevation gain is gradual. There are some exposed portions of the trail with steep drop-offs and there are 2 river crossings.
We were there on a weekday in the middle of summer and it wasn't crowded at all. However, the campers there told us that it gets very busy during the school season, since this is a somewhat short drive from Missoula.
