Episode 46: Best Kidney Diet to Prevent KIDNEY FAILURE - What is the best RENAL DIET for kidney disease to improve kidney function, prevent kidney failure, treat chronic kidney disease (CKD) symptoms, and avoid dialysis. When facing renal failure you want the best diet for kidney disease - but which renal diet is best? We all ask these questions since diet and kidney disease need to be aligned. In the end, there is no 1 best diet and nearly any diet customized by a renal dietitian based on your labs can be made to work. Some diets are better than others, and we'll dive into that.
Let's look at what is the best diet for kidney disease to help slow down, stop, or reverse kidney damage and avoid kidney failure and dialysis. I walk through the importance of being on the right kidney diet, list many popular diets used by patients with kidney disease, and answer the question of which is the best diet for kidney disease.
The answer is controversial to some who are closed-minded and not focused on a plan to fight and beat kidney disease: THERE IS NO 1 BEST DIET - You must customize the diet based on YOUR LABS and nearly any diet can be made to work...as long as you can stick to the diet. I then dive into how to set goals for your diet, how to make modifications when needed, and other tips to help make your diet more successful.
Importance of being on a renal diet
• Reduce stress on your kidneys
• Reduce inflammation
• Provide body nutrients it needs
• Limit nutrients body doesn’t need
• Manage blood sugar and blood pressure
• Reduce or prevent side effect or compilations
• Protect remaining kidney function
• Enhance your overall health
Possible renal diets for kidney disease
• Dash diet
• Diabetic diets
• Dialysis diet
• Heart Health diets
• Ketogenic diet
• Low-Protein diet
• Mediterranean diet
• Vegetarian diet
• Vegan diet
• Whole-Foods Plant Based diet
• And many more!

7 months ago, my hubby's GFR was 13% Stage 5 and we were advised to look into dialysis and transplant. It was a huge shock even though we knew the day would come when his kidneys were attacked by Allupurinol. So we changed our diet entirely to palm sized protein (mainly fish and ocassional chicken) and organic veges and fruits. Apple cider vinegar with honey first thing in the morning with warm water. 15 minutes to half an hour later... a smoothie made from a little cabbage, kale, leek, cucumber, spring onion, beetroot, lemon, bitterguord. Berries including (frozen when fresh is not available) blueberry, strawberry, raspbery, blackberry, cranberry (100% cold pressed organic). Also in the smoothie were fresh herbs like parsley, cilandro, sage, mint, rosemary, fennel, tarragon, thyme, oregano, basil (just a leave or two). Half an apple and pear are included in the smoothie. I used 100% organic cranberry juice with filter water and blend it really smooth with my Nutribullet. When ready I add 2 tablespoon probitic yoghurt, and the following spices - tumeric, cumin, chia seeds. He was complaining that breakfast was too late as to him, smoothie is not a meal. He then eats non-gluten bread with virgin olive oil infused with garlic. Lunch is a salad - pretty much with the same veges as above, again with non-gluten bread and his fav extra virgin olive oil infused with garlic. After tea is half an apple, half a pear. Dinner is his palm sized protein, rice, large veges. 4 months ago, his GFR was 16% (Stage 4). 1 month ago 19% and last week 20%. He also lost 5 kg. However this sudden change of diet resulted in terrible constipation and I've modified his diet since. It was a little better after using Movicol and Coloxyl (not long term solution) but has recently become better. I've used all the above but in much smaller portions to reduce his fibre. I'm constantly adding small portions of other non animal proteins to feed his macrobiome eg half a piece of walnut, half a piece of cashew and half a piece of almond. My own diet has completely changed so that I can prepare the meals together... so I actually add one nut but since we both share it, it equates to half a nut for him. I added a little frozen passion fruit and red dragon fruit. I've also added a chestnut the size of a walnut. So while the above is a constant, I'm always on a look out for new veges or fruits to add to his diet. I'm also including 1 cm of banana. At this moment cauliflower and brocoli are in season. So I add a very small piece of each to his smoothie. I look at the nutrients of the food that we eat from USDA Database. At this moment, I'm not too much concern if they're high in Potassium or Phosphorus as I add such a tiny portion of everything. I get very nervous each time he gets his blood results. At this moment, we're off the dialysis and transplant lists and if God is kind, we hope not to see the list for a long time. Btw hubby also had a heart failure 2 years ago and he takes so much medication that it sounds that he's having lollies in the morning - high blood pressure etc. I like the idea of setting goals. We're achieving like 1% GFR per month. I shall be brave and proclaim that we should reach Stage 3 by January 2021. We're still experimenting everyday. He had very smelly poo but his poo lost all its smell while his GFR was improving but very hard stool and constipation. Now the poo is smelling again, he's not constipating but we're worried what implications this can have on his kidneys. We'll continue to work hard and be brave Kidney Warriors, amd we need to stop worrying because whatever will be, will be. Btw we also started consulting a Naturopath 6 months ago because we wanted him to have a look at our diet and he reckons that it's a very clean diet. He gave my hubby Reneel drops that he reckons is very good for the kidneys. He also gave hjm a herbal concoction that includes Nettle seeds, bitter guord, butternut, rubarb, Hawthorn, marshmellow and glossy privet. We like going to him as he helps us to compare the lab results and adjusys his concoctions accordingly. It's like having a life coach to rah rah us on 😗😘😍 So Kidney Warriors, it is indeed possible to help your kidneys by eating a kidney friendly diet 😗😘😍

I discovered you last week after being diagnosed from stage 3 in 2017 to stage 4. I’ve always eaten relatively healthy, so I reacted similar to you when I found out! Even though I have researched before, sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why I love your video!! Not only do you break things down easily and understandably, your realness and positive attitude is awesome. It’s true that we’re all different!! I looked at your video on the alkaline diet. I liked some of the ideas, but I knew it was going to be challenging. I’m also a coeliac, and unlike a lot of kidney patients, I suffer from low potassium, instead of high & have ended up in the ICU with hypokalemia twice, with my recent stint only 6 weeks ago. Now, I’m looking at the DASH diet, as it seems like something I would enjoy more, so that I can still eat some low fat dairy products. However, when you suggested to mix it up to how it would suit each individual person, it makes sense & makes it more enjoyable. Thank you for your awesome videos!! I’m determined to say bye to fatigue, bye to stage 4, hello new, healthier, stronger & energetic me!! 💪🏼💪🏼

@@annamariedoctolero512 Hello. Yes, happy to share some of what I eat. However, I do want to say, as I already mentioned, we are all different. There is no one way, or the right way. It´s just trial and error to what works for you. For instance, in my original comment I explained that I´m a coeliac, plus I also mentioned about my difference in potassium. What I liked about Dadvice is that you have to just figure out what works best for you, because we´re all different. It´s really trying to find the balance that works for you. I eat a lot of fish, chicken and veggies, I intermittent fast, and I eat bone broths, as well as drinking a lot of water. I also enjoy wine with my friends, and the occasional take out, and I´ve found a good balance that works for me. I hope that helps.

Hi all, I am 66yrs young. And been diagnosed with CKD. My eGFR is 68mL/min. I also have been taken off my diabetic meds since last December. LCHF is my diet guide and so far it has brought my weight down to 73kg. Exercising alternate days by brisk walking uphill over 5km has helped a lot. I have stopped smoking for over 15yrs. Here I am hoping to slow down the deterioration of my kidneys and eat more healthily. Cheers all!

Wow! You’re awesome! I just got my lab results and my gfr is 42. Shocked am I! Had no idea I was headed in this direction! I’m 71, and 8 moths ago I had leg cramps very bad and was told I need potassium and I could get them over the counter. I’ve been taking them for 8 mths 1200 mg . I’ve already learned so much vitally important information from your videos, but the number one thing that stands out is “always consult your doctor before taking any supplements “. I’m thinking this is also caused from Advil, Motrin, Alene etc.. I suffered for years with migraines.. the damage is done so I’ll be following your “Dadvice” as much as possible.

I am 80, heart disease, diabetes, high BP and CKD. 5 years ago my GFR was 30 and I started seeing a kidney specialist. 2 years ago I had a mild heart attack and had a stint placed in a heart artery. My GFR dropped do to the contrast used in the stint operation. I made no change in my diet and my GFR continued to drop till a year ago I was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia that was diagnosed as congestive heart failure. My GFR dropped to 16 and I was put on dialysis in the hospital and 20 sessions after out of the hospital. Following the doctors instructions primarily to drink at least 2 liters or more of water a day my GFR is now 23. About a month ago I began a no animal protein vegetarian diet I got from your video in the hope of lowering my creatinen thus raising my GFR. My goal is to get it to 30 and I am confident I can do it.
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 5 лет назад
Sounds like a great plan Don! Going vegetarian will help lower your BUN and Creatinine, raising your GFR. Make sure your other labs are within the standard range - getting that done first really helps in lowering your BUN and Creatinine with diet. If your other labs are out of what, it is tougher to get your BUN and Creatinine down. Most doctors recommend people drink 1/2 their body weight (in lbs) in ounces unless on a water restriction. For example, a 160lb person would drink 80 oz of water a day. Not only does it help the kidneys and your GFR, but also reduces the chance of developing kidney stones. Throw some lemon in your food or water to also help prevent kidney stones.

I actually have some text books doctors use, and up until 2007 they were not trained to really discuss kidney issues until stage 4, at which case most where taught to prepare you for dialysis. Another challenge is very few people will make the changes needed to improve, so it can feel like a useless conversation to some doctors unless the person is pushing for help. You have to be your best advocate to push for your doctor to be more proactive in your treatment strategy.

Glad you find it helpful. Having a chronic illness takes a huge toll on us mentally and emotionally. I believe myself to be an understanding person, but even I didn't understand chronic fatigue until it happened to me. So I believe it is just difficult for some people to relate. I would love to see some characters in TV shows and movies correctly portrayed with CKD. So many have made kidney disease (and getting a transplant) look so easy - almost like you had bad acne. The 2018 movie One Last Thing did a good job of representing kidney disease - the main character was always cold, got tired easily, and had many other symptoms common with a GFR of 15-20. The movie didn't get watched much, and it isn't helpful for encouraging people to become kidney donors, but I would like to see more movies and shows with main characters who are dealing with the struggles we face. I believe that will help others to better understand us. Until then - we all have each other online, at kidney events, and other local events. If you haven't seen One Last Thing, you can watch a trailer of it at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SlBHuIEWP50.html - I enjoyed most of the movie, though I disagree with some of the storyline and how it might discourage people from becoming donors. It did help some people I know to understand kidney disease better.

I know this video was posted a while ago but figured this was the best place to ask my question. I am going to go on a renal diet. Whoops! First my gfr is 14. About two months ago it went to 12 and I felt so sick. I was packing to run to emergency room. I was printing out my medication list and realized I left one out. So I added it but decided to look it up something I never do (because I don't want side effects to get in my head). Anyway when I looked it up and read some of the reviews I was shocked because they described exactly how I was feeling. So I decided to wait one more day before going to ER. I stopped that medication and wow I felt much better and two days later I felt the best in a long time. So my doctor ran another blood test and my gfr went from 12 to 16. But then my next test went from 16 to 15. And now my recent test went from 15 to 14. And my sugars have been good. And I am trying to eat what is listed as safe for kidneys. So I am surprised that I couldn't get the gfr up a little more. However I am taking a lot of medications that are definitely not good for the kidneys. And some of these I really can't get off. Back to my original question: I'm not good at cooking really and would rather order one of those food delivery systems. I was getting my diet food from BistroMD. I like it but its not a renal diet. So has anyone used one of the renal diet delivery systems. I found a few but I don't know which one to try? Thanks Rob

It took 6 weeks to see a nephrologist, whom I just saw this past week. I am going to combine what's okay on AIP diet with kidney diet after my kidney ultrasound and 24-hour urine collection test. God bless you for what you are doing.❤

The next day my doctor called to give me my results and she told me to drink more water and come back in 3 months. I said, are you sure are there any other suggestions and is this serious? She said no, just drink more water. Well thank God for people like you so I can get a handle on my diet which is already clean and no other issues except for alcoholism. That will be my challenge to slow down my drinking and get off of Keto and do more plant proteins.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and was put on Insulin Injections that were safe for people with Kidney Disease. I weaned off the Injections with my own low carb diet which included one slice of bread per day. I then did LCHF diet then went onto Keto but I tailored the Keto Diet due to Kidney Disease. My blood work now shows NORMAL range so Doctor classifies me as no longer being Type 2. My GFR was 24 and is now 35 ! I am due for another test in around 2 months time. I am still doing my tailored Ketogenic Diet. When I use the term "tailored" I eat less meat than is required for Keto and I also watch my salt intake & potassium intake as well as phosphorus. I never followed macros in my diet as I keep it as simple as possible. I lost 30 kilos in the process without exercise. I have found that I have way more energy now that Diabetes is in the past and my kidney function is improved. I am sure my kidney function will continue to improve further. I want to get my creatinine level down more so not eating the amount of eggs that I use to. :) Great video James !!

I am worried about my Mother. She is 82 and recently had a heart attack last May 19th. It was then found that she had a Kidney GFR of 11. Since then we have had meetings with the Kidney specialist. We are being prepared for dialysis and nothing else suggested. Is there anyway back from Stage 5 and this low reading. I understand the diet is the key but just wondered if it is now too late to avoid dialysis. She does have diabetes and high blood pressure. They have been managed and those have good readings. The kidney issue is the big concern. Well done on your RU-vid channel and updates. Thank you.

I think with some people with Kidney Disease, they don't improve by much or simply stabilize their kidneys due to the type of Kidney Disease that they have perhaps. I have noticed a comment on here where they had improved their kidney function by a big degree within only 2 months. I found that to be amazing when I have been working on my diet to help my kidneys & to reverse Diabetes for over 2 years now. I am still happy with my results and happy for those that have done amazingly well. At the very beginning of discovering I had Type 2 Diabetes and my GFR was at 28, I focused on my diet from then on. I took ill with food poisoning which plummeted my GFR down to 24 then within weeks I got it back up to a GFR of 35. In another 2 months my blood test is due again so it will be interesting what it will be then.
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 5 лет назад
You are so correct - some people are able to improve a lot in a rather short amount of time, but others have to work even harder just to become stable, or even to slow down the decline in kidney function. I feel there is an element of luck involved - even with my determination and dedication, I may run into a wall of the max I can improve. But for all of us we learn so much along the journey and while my kidney function will be a challenge for the rest of my life (or until a solution comes along) I understand enough about diet to keep many of the symptoms (especially fatigue) away. There is a lot of very interesting research going on right now and I am confident there will be multiple alternatives to help use with CKD in the not too distant future. A few areas I am very excited about are 1) The artificial kidney which can greatly help with filtering toxins, allowing your remaining kidney function to be focused on managing your blood pressure, Vitamin D, etc. 2) Stem Cell therapy which is showing some progress in improving kidney function and regenerating Nephrons, 3) Regrowing a replacement kidney with work Nephrons. Each of of these has made great progress over the last 10 years and the growing burden of kidney care is putting more resources towards trying to get these into clinical trials.
@CreativeDee
@CreativeDee 5 лет назад
@@DADVICETV , I think the stem cell will be the better choice. The artificial Kidney , I would imagine, if used then the Patient would need to take anti-rejection pills for. If they do then the anti-rejection medication is well known for giving people brain tumors. My Mum & another kidney patient had donated kidneys from the same donor. Mum's kidney got an infection and the other Kidney Patient died with a brain tumor. So knowing that, I am all for better kidney replacement ideas such as the use of stem cells.

Hi I am a 43 year old and I had a GFR of 75. That was about a year ago. I was quite concerned even though my Dr. Wasn't. I think it's crazy that no one will tell you that your kidney function is declining unless you fall below a certain number. This is a horrible policy. I researched things myself and within two months retested with a GFR of 85. During those months I did go Vegan and also focused on lowering my protein intake and hydrating with fresh green juices. This is what worked for me. I plan to get tested again and hope to bring that number up even more. Thanks for the info on this channel!!

Thanks to you James I have been able to research on foods and so I purchased 2 recipe books written by a nephrologist dietitian who breaks down the recipes into protein calories phosphorous etc and that really helps. Some have animal meats and some are purely vegetarian recipes. I find these books helpful as they make them tasty. Salt has been my enemy so trying to make something that tastes good is a challenge. I am grateful for the books as they have a few really tasty ones. It can be challenging to leave out salt but so far I have been ok doing without. Even with Kidney Disease, the body still needs salt. The books you speak of, are the recipes high carbohydrates ? Omega 3 is an important fatty acid for your entire body and not to consume too much Omega 6. Wild caught Salmon is a great Omega 3 to consume. You can google to find out what other foods have Omega 3 in them. :)

Thank you for your support! Can you share the names and authors of those books - I would certainly like to purchase them for myself and others may also want to purchase them. Salt is a unique one - it can be harmful if you have low GFR and most doctors seem to be overly strict when your GFR is higher. Pink Himalayan Sea Salt is a better choice of iodized table salt - ask your doctor what your daily min and max targets would be if you used that instead when cooking, If they understand the difference they will give you higher daily limits, allowing you to enjoy salt in your meals.

From my experience they just usher you in to dialysis. My primary care doctor knew for 4 years my kidneys were failing. Told me one day 4 years later its time to see kidney doctor. Then found my GFR was 30 right then. Next month i am stage 4. I couldn't find a kidney dietitian. Found you only get one once on dialysis. So I thought well I do have diabetes. I thought I'll just go and get one for diabetes. Well two that I found turned me down and said i need a kidney dietitian. Not on dialysis yet but at the door. Everything you hear on internet what to do...counteracts something else. Not right after all this time we still don't know how to help the body to heal or at least try. Just wanted a chance. Glad you found a good dietitian. Of course dietitian in hospital told me to eat x 65 games of carbs a meal and I'll get medicine. That was insane. It's all about keeping you needing them till you die. But don't ever give up.

No problem. It actually came from my doctor when I just couldn't take not sleeping all night. I would be so tired getting up in the morning since I'd be up most of the night and fall asleep around 4 am and have to wait up in a couple hours. My doc told me to stop eating by 6pm and to reduce the carbs in my dinner meal. I also was pre-diabetic and still extremely overweight, so we were tweaking my diet to try and solve those primarily. The way it was explained to me was that by reduce the hours I ate, I reduced the spikes in my blood sugar and gave my body time to catch up with what I had eaten. The doc drew a graph and talked about how people eat 6 times a day on average (we think 3, but we also snack) and it causes your blood sugar to increase (insulin reaction). Those of us with kidney disease have trouble sleeping from the build up of toxins, high blood sugar, and some other things. There was a lot more to it - but when I asked "How exactly" do I address this, it was to stop eating by 6pm and try not to eat until 10am. That was pretty easy to do and in only a couple days I started sleeping THE ENTIRE NIGHT. It has been that way since then with only a few sleepless nights (usually from worrying about work or something). I've continued Intermittent fasting since then and even went to one meal a day (not sure if I'm going to keep up with this for much longer). My blood sugar is now completely normal and I am not pre-diabetic, so I'm going to stick with Intermittent fasting in some form (most likely eat between 10am and 6pm). Hope this helps. My doc was so much better at explaining it and it feels like it was a lifetime ago.

@@DADVICETV Thanks so much, James, for the in depth reply. That helps me see the big picture a lot better. By the way, you've got some doctor there who would take the time to draw a graph for you. My orthopedist always tells me to take the 4:30 p.m. appt because he knows I am going to ask a million questions. Haha. But we need to, right?! Without knowledge it is difficult to maintain a long term battle. Thanks again. 👋

You mentioned you had your keto meals delivered to you... Can you let us know how we could contact that same company so we could order them like ourselves too or are they just and you're state? And by the way I thought the keto diet is not good for kidneys since it includes Meats.

In one of your videos you mentioned to stay away from foods with preservatives and then I saw a video where you were showing frozen foods such as Amy’s and others and all frozen foods have preservatives so I’m kinda confused.

Markus Rothkranz here on RU-vid has a kidney formula. It has nettle leaf, chanca piedra, citrus peel, etc. Wonder if it is good to take.
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 5 лет назад
Nettle leaf can be beneficial for some, but there is also research showing it should be avoided. Like so many things surrounding CKD, there is conflicting information online. Best to ask a dietitian who knows your labs. If you do that, post back what they tell you to share with others, Thanks and good luck!

When I had a lower GFR my doctors recommended lean red meat to help me with iron and other elements to address labs that were low. I followed their advice and now see what they were doing - getting everything within range first, then focus on getting my BUN and Creatinine down. Getting that meat a few times a week can help you in a similar way.

You are so right with everything you’r saying, there is no diet that is good , for kidney disease. And we all different . My diet was so boring I hated it and it was so uninteresting, I wish I could or didn’t have to eat. So I started to with in limit make interesting Whole Foods. And make pasts to put on my bread 🥖 not to be so dry....as I didn’t use butter or no Margarines. It was dry with only one thin slice of ham.....junk. So I just calculated what I had to eat for the day and walked a lot to work off my triglycerides. As I was very over weight. It’s all hard work but was terrified to go on dialysis. Do I lost weight, got my blood pressure under control. Felt great.... had lots of energy. Stayed stable until now. I have picked up some weight , so not I am cutting out fats a lot again. And like you say no processed foods. It’s a Big no no .... fruits and veggies salads, and water . Carbs limited. And all bought foods is out....the door. No pastries, n cakes, no puddings, no snacks. And no salty foods. As well as sweets chocolates. I got a bit off track , but blood works was good for my condition. Now I am back full blast and going to lose what I picked up. And started to excersize again and walking 🚶‍♀️ like your ur videos, you inspire me to be aware constantly, make good choices in foods and keep on track. Tks. For sharing your story. There is lots of people that can benefit hearing your reversible story. I always knew it can be reversed, it’s not the end...❤️🌹🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I was recently diagnosed with T2DM. I hv bn hypertensive for quite sometime now. My MicroAlbumen (MA) diagnosis was 21.5 (normal range is 0.00-1.7). My blood glucose then fasting 170 after meals was 190. My Creatinine 0.8. The nephrologist suggested the high MA might have been due to high blood glucose level. Kindly advise

If I grew up living a laid back lifestyle I'm willing to bet that would have never picked up a cigarette. Stress is a terrible thing!
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 5 лет назад
You are correct -stress is a terrible thing. Not only does it push us towards bad habits (smoking, over eating, etc.) but it also wrecks havoc on your body. I was surrounded by smokers growing up, but we were so poor I could never afford cigarettes so I never got started with them. I've always been more of a "saver" when it comes to money and just couldn't see burning my money.
