Phosphorus is a mineral found in many foods. It works with calcium and vitamin D in your body to keep your bones healthy and strong. Healthy kidneys keep the right amount of phosphorus in your body, but when you have reduced kidney function, phosphorus can build up to dangerous levels in your blood. Managing phosphorus is an important part of your kidney disease treatment diet to help maintain kidney function, prevent kidney failure, and avoid dialysis.
The majority of the phosphorus comes from our diet. Phosphorus comes in many different forms, is very cheap, and is used widely around the world. Whereas Potassium is fairly easy to find and avoid, finding low phosphorus foods for kidney patients is tricky.
The food industry is adding more phosphorus to foods that are traditionally considered low phosphorus foods for kidney patients. The following are a few foods and beverages that contain hidden phosphorus and are not recommended kidney foods:
• Flavored waters
• Iced teas
• Sodas and other bottled beverages
• Enhanced meat and chicken products
• Breakfast (cereal) bars
• Nondairy creamers
• Bottled coffee beverages
The number of products containing these additives grows weekly. This makes it virtually impossible for dietitians and those with CKD to know what’s “safe” for their renal diet and what should be limited.
Phosphorus is added to foods for a variety of reasons. Phosphorus additives can be used to make foods creamier, allow foods that wouldn’t normally melt to melt, maintain the juiciness of meat and prevent beverages from separating into individual ingredients. Phosphorus also makes food last longer.
One of the best ways to reduce phosphorus buildup is to make dietary changes and only eat low phosphorus foods. To do that, you’ll need to learn which foods are high in phosphorus, which are low, and how to find phosphorus that has been added.
Locating hidden sources of phosphorus in your renal diet requires patience, diligence and a lot of label reading. However, it’s worth the effort to help you reduce the amount of phosphorus in your renal diet. Look for ingredients with the letters "PHOS" in them. If they appear once in the first half of the ingredients, assume they have too much phosphorus. If they appear 2 or more times anywhere on the label, assume they have too much phosphorus. If the do not appear, this is low phosphorus food for kidney disease patients.

Another fabulous video James. My last lab results showed very high levels of phosphorous. I've been a vegetarian since I was 9 years old and am now in my 50's and could not understand where this stuff had crept into my system from. When I realised from one of your videos where you briefly spoke of phospherous, especially in dairy, I considered what changes to my diet have I made since the last labs 6 weeks earlier. Low and behold, I was eating a lot of cottage cheese and oat crackers. I read the label of the crackers, sure enough there it was, the culprit. I haven't had any of them since and only have a tablespoon of cottage cheese twice a week. I'm hoping my lab results due next week will show my levels are within the normal range. I learn so much from you, thank God I found your channel.

Oddly enough, I stumbled on yout channel because my 14 year old dog suddenly got very thirsty and incontinent. I took her to the vet and and she refused to pee for them. So, they did blood work and she either has an infection, is dehydrated or beginning chronic kidney disease. She's on antibiotics in case infection, but i have a feeling it's kidney disease. Her numbers were slightly elevated. Been researching dog food low in phosphorus. Some RU-vidrs feel low carb is the way to go and others feel too much protein is the problem. I'm doing my best to figure it out. I am gathering that you initially went low protein and now modified keto. I sm enjoying your animated content and information.

Keep track of the foods you eat - one of the challenges I found with a vegetarian diet is higher urice acid, low PH (acid) and high Magnesium. I'm adjusting the foods I eat (no spinach, more apples and cucumber, etc.) to fix those. None of mine were out of range, but they were on the border. I'm extremely happy with my diet currently (vegetarian cooked in case iron).

I have stage 3 kidney disease. Am rapidly heading for stage 4. I also going through my 3rd round of gout in my left foot. Omg! The pain is unbearable. They say gout is related to arthritis. I'm sure it is. However after googling the heck out of this subject I have come to the conclusion it is more affected by poor functioning kidneys. Could you or would you please address this issue in one of your videos. I'm just starting to implement some of your advice. I have found my number one enemy is SALT. Second is sugar and third is fat. For several days now I have purged my eating of all three of these things. My gout does not seem to be better YET. But my body is feeling better. Glad it was helpful! It's funny, I used to NEVER be in front of a camera and did everything to avoid it. There may be 5-6 photos of me from the last 10 years and ALWAYS hiding behind people. My doctor was confident he could help me improve and encouraged me to keep a journal. He knew what kind of person I was and told me I'd get better and then want to write a book about it. I quickly decided to start recording what I had learned as if I was talking to myself from the future. Really enjoy your videos, I'm suffering from stage 5 ckd, and I've been asked prepare for dyalisis. I've been hesitant for a long time about going on dyalisis. And at this stage I do not want to use it, but I do want to improve my kidney function. I don't have some of the typical symptoms of CKD sufferers, my blood pressure is normally good, I don't have diabetes and I urinate normally, the symptoms I do have are fatigue and poor sleep. My creatinine levels are high and I could lose some weight to help improve my general health. But I will try my best to implement much of what you have, like drinking more water and cutting out sodas, and just improving my entire diet.

Please do cut out sodas and eat only kidney friendly foods - future you is depending on the decisions you make today. When I finally got to where I was no longer fatigued and sleeping all night it was amazing - and I want that for you. At first it seemed really difficult, it looking back, I am so glad I stuck with the diet and gave my body the opportunity to get better. Along this journey I have found a whole new me - one that is so much healthier and happier. I too needed to lose weight (well, a lot), and that is now happening naturally as I continue to get better. Best of luck in your journey - you can do it and then share your story with others so that they too can be encouraged to try and avoid Dialysis.

Hello: Could you please do a video on Hypertension and CKD Stage 4 Diet. Many foods for HTN are not indicated for CKD and vice versa. A simple breakfast, lunch and dinner meal plan would help lots of patients. There are all sorts of videos on HTN or CKD, but none for patients who have both HTN and CKD

Sir, I just want to ask if yours is CKD or accute kidney disease when you recovered from stage 5. My sister has ckd. Her bp is back to normal and her fbs is 96 although she has diabetes.

Is what you're talking about the same as Alkaline Phosphatase that is done in a blood test?, if yes, then a reading of 85 indicates normal or abnormal?

I'm 28 years old and I'm stage 4. I have given up so much and willingly to do more. I have cut off dark soda, smoking, drinking, a lot of fast food and such. I'm still struggling with tea and fast food chicken places. My biggest issue for strict diet change is that. I get serious gag reflexes and I'll throw up the food that I'm not even used to eating. This is the cause when I was a kid. Food was literally shoved in my mouth to the point I gag and choke. Now, when it comes to healthier veggies like broccoli, lettuce and such, I start to gag. Every time. I want to change but I don't want to gag and vomit. Any advice or tricks?

My husband has itching. His back is terrible from his itching. He has seen doctors from different clinics & none have suggested ting back on phosphorous. So sad. Is this information fairly new that these doctors don't know about this. They've suggested the different creams. They don't help.

Hi James what kind of bread can my Husband eat ? Are Organic foods fresh of course ok to consume?
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 5 лет назад
Organic is always great - but you'll want to look for regular white bread with low sodium and no preservatives. The higher his GFR the less critical it is to stick with white bread and no preservatives. When I was stage 4 and 5 and ate bread (I'm now excluding carbs) I had it made fresh at a local bakery. They did not add preservatives and used very little salt. It cost me about the same for the fresh bread as a loaf at the super market. You can see other options in my grocery shopping list at www.dadvicetv.com/grocery-shopping-kidney-disease

Since you’re opposed to pills, what type of painkillers do you get when you have cavities drilled? (I know an owner of a health food store who told me ha never gets painkillers when he gets his teeth drilled).
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 4 года назад
I'm against additional unnecessary pills. I take my blood pressure medication every day, I take a renal multivitamin daily, and I take a few other doctor recommended supplements to address gaps in my diet. What I am not a fan of is being given pills just to have more pills. If I can adjust my diet to get iron, I'd rather do that than add an extra iron pill. As far as dental work, I haven't needed to have my teeth drilled (I'm a bit of a clean-freak and have grown up with some pretty strong dental habits and personal cleaning habits - which has come in very handy recently with Covid-19). If I was to need a painkiller, I would most likely reach for Tylenol and take the minimum needed and stop taking it as soon as I no longer needed it.

Got my labs last Friday (just a few days ago) and working on a couple videos about them, I talked a little about them in my Facebook channel, no great results for my kidneys from it so far - great at losing weight and improving energy. Need to tweak the diet some more, less protein and more fiber is my guess. Meet with my team later this week. I really like the Keto diet, but it is getting bit challenging to make it not just kidney friendly, but to work positively for those of us with CKD.
@measwell3313
@measwell3313 5 лет назад
@@DADVICETV I didnt think Keto would work well, at least in the long run. Meat adds creatinine which you wish to lower but...the balance comes as to whether rapidly losing weight is more benefical in the long term. I am of the belief that as kidney patients we can meet our protein needs through whole food plant based ways of eating but the weight loss wont be as rapid as it can be with Keto. My concern with Keto is if in the short term (CKD) weight might go back on once complete. With WFPLNO, you will lose the weight although not as rapidly but your kidneys will be healthier. Good for you for experimenting though to see what works best for your body.
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 5 лет назад
@@measwell3313 I agree, I don't see Keto as a long term diet, more as a way to quickly drop pounds. My wife says I look like a whole new person since I've lost over 100lbs in 6 months and once I drop another 40 I will be done with losing weight. At my current rate, that should be around the end of summer - though my weight loss may slow down as I make adjustments to lower my protein.
@measwell3313
@measwell3313 5 лет назад
@@DADVICETV Impressive. 100lbs though.That alone. That will help lower your creatinine. Congratulations! Keep up the good work!!!!

Hey thanks for all your videos! I took a frequency scan test that came up low phosphorous and so was looking for info and found you. I do have a kidney problem where I lose magnesium and potassium and so need to supplement. I don't have insurance so I am saving up for a Nephrologist appointment. Any thoughts on what could cause renal wasting of those things? Thanks! Sue

What types of Phosphorus binders do prefer or recommended? There are pharmaceutical Phosphorus binders, and there natural or supplement binders like Niacinamide and Chitosan combined binders? Since, most pharmaceutical meds seems to come with some form of side effetcts........Sure would like you comments on those
