This is by far the best compost bucket or composter bin I have found for the kitchen to recycle waste and scraps. We got rid of our bokashi bucket composting system and replaced it with a fermenting drum - it works great!
Here's the same compost container on eBay AU: bit.ly/2JHs22Z
For USA this is the most similar I could find on Amazon: bit.ly/2JIbnw7 (if you do find something better please let me know)

I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

Mark, in the US you can get "Gamma Seal Lids" (also made for brewers) that will snap onto standard 3.5 and 5 gallon buckets- providing that same type of screw on/off convenience and airtight seal.

I've been looking for a similar bucket here in Germany and I finally found one I thought would be quite okay.. It's not for fermenting though.. but for baby diapers waste. It is airtight and has a lid you can screw off. I will buy it and try it out :) It is called Rotho Babydesign Windeleimer.

My wife and I just use a 3-5 gallon bucket that we got from a local bakery. Except for a twist on lid, it sits by my kitchen door with its lid and a big brick on it to dissuade our dogs from getting into it. But good on you for sharing this, all the same. Blessings Mark!

Good one, Mark. I like the lid on that one. I use a bucket I bought from my local bakery for $2.50. Yea, I am cheap LOL. Well, it's a strong bucket but the handle is flimsy. Still, it does the job. I just need to make a wire handle and add a piece of hose to it and voila, my kitchen scrap bucket :)
@FM-qm5xs
@FM-qm5xs 5 лет назад
I got a couple of ceramic pots with lids from the side of the road. They work well since it's just me and not a full family of waste. It's extra easy open and the fruit flies don't get under the lid because it is heavy. Since I managed to find two I just alternate and let nature clean them out for me. I'll take a full one to the compost and grab the rain rinsed or at least dried out one so I am not having to hose them all the time to prevent them getting smelly. I think the coolness of the ceramic also helps to prevent letting things become a hot smelly mess while in the kitchen.

This is similar to our system, we have a simple miracle grow brand name 28gallon tumbler in the garden from the orange box online store. We add peat moss for our brown/carbon, maybe 5 gallons cumulative per cycle, a little here or there usually when we tumble but that's maybe 1-2 tumbles per month. In the house we have a 3 liter stainless steel ($8) counter top compost collector from the local homewares box store, no stench nor bugs. With a large family we empty the countertop container once or twice a week. No uncooked vegie scraps coffee grinds or tea leaves go to garbage. If we get compost juice it goes in the tumbler and usually very little from the kitchen unit. Going to try a compost tea treatment on the garden just as soon as rains stop. 10 inches of rain this past month, that's twice the 100 year average, so all fertilizer has been getting washed out.

Thanks for this!!! I compost because I live in Las Vegas and boy do we have crappy soil. Hard desert sand and rock. I watched your video you did a year ago on mini pineapples and want to thank you for that one as well! I had a feeling there was no need to try and root a pineapple, and because I have such a small growing area, I must use my soil carefully. Can pineapples handle the direct sun? We are already at 115° Fahrenheit.

GOOD EVENING.. I am watching this a little after you made it.. and I would really like to have a name for the tumbler... I used the links on the tumber vid, but couldnt find anything.. Also Dont mind this composting container for kitchen, again I cant find it.... smallest I can find is 30 Ltre and $30 delivery... THough I already have a plastic bucket with lid and I am very lazy, I can get fairly good pots so I drill the holes in bottom and then I sit that one in one without holes, and i throw everything in, scaps coffee newspaper, etc, etc,,, and then when about 3 inches from top it goes out in the yard to break down some more, before I plant something in it... I have used wood, old dead plants etc, for the base so I dont need to use so much soil But would really appreciate the brand of tumbler and the size... though I am wondering if a one person family really needs it??? Will have a looky see. THank YOU from Victoria OZ

Thank you for your video! It was great! I’m new to composting and have some questions: how long can you collect scraps in the kitchen before you have to put them on your compost pile? I’m afraid they will rot or start to smell. Also, Once you start your compost batch in the tumbler can you continue adding scraps or you have to let it complete and then start a new batch? Thank you!
@articmars1
@articmars1 2 года назад
I am not mark but from experience i would empty the container as soon as its full. It will control the flies and the smell. Make sure you rinse the container really well. As far as adding additional material you can add until its full. But it will be a bit longer before you can utilize the compost. I hope this helped. 😊

First of all, I'd like to say your channel is fantastic. I know your time is limited but I'd really like to pitch an idea to you. Here in the states we cannot find anything comparable to your steel beds. Have you considered using Alibaba to produce your own and selling it in the states?
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 6 лет назад
Thank you for the suggestion and yes I have been lobbying for some retailer/manufacturers to market their raised beds in the USA because I get lots of people requesting them and currently I have been given notice from Birdies Garden beds here in Oz that they'll be sending a container over to the States arriving next spring. It would have gone earlier but they just received a huge order here domestically so had to postpone the shipment to the US unfortunately... Hopefully, one day it will be easier to get these beds in the USA because they really are great to garden in especially for older people or those with disabilities etc - stand up limited bend gardening is so much easier! Cheers :)

What's the purpose of the tumbler?
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 6 лет назад
It's supposed to be a faster way (then a compost heap) to turn scraps into compost. Turning the tumbler regularly should help to break down the scraps to become a rich organic food medium to add to the garden. I'm new to tumblers so I'm testing this out and will be making a video on the effectiveness once I gather enough information. Cheers :)

I guess you are not considering the circumstances of other people. Not everyone is lucky to live on acres of land and have a huge garden and space to equip it with a composter or tumbler of something like that. Some people are living in flats, without a garden and or space to compost. For those, the Bokashi system is a blessing! And no fruitfly invasion happens if you keep your stuff clean... Hygiene is a must and the most simple thing to do. When finished composting, you wash it out with hot, soapy water and leave it to dry. In the crevices, too. Like you would do with any other dish. No need to throw a shade on something, just because you have other options!!! Most of us don't. Maybe you should just stick to your tips regarding the plants, and leave the rest to the people to decide, what works best for them. And for your record, I checked your link. LOL. It is not even the same container you've linked. And it would cost almost the same as 2 Bokashi with the bran. Such a scam...
@Bamboo4U2
@Bamboo4U2 5 лет назад
Geeze, does anyone know how to do this correctly? First off, you're not supposed to toss an entire orange peel in there. EVERYTHING you put in should be finely chopped to its smallest possible size. Next, you're not supposed to be opening and closing it all the time. Save your day-to-day items in a sealed bin in the fridge. After a week or two, THEN you put it into the bucket to ferment. Crikey. After two weeks, THEN you bury it in the compost bin or in the ground. Don't plant anything in that spot for at least two weeks.

Peter Buka Tuhinga I'm just trying to help old mate here. I hope that he will start living purely off the nice produce of his garden and leave the animals and their products off his plate .Sorry if I've come off as judgey 👍

Or perhaps a different diet that works for him, or not depending on how he wishes to eat and enjoy life. Personally would never go vegan, as I don’t think you can easily get enough of all the correct vitamins without animal products, but if vegan works for you great, but leave other decide how they would like to eat unless they ask for ideas

Hmmm, tried the link but unfortunately the postage cost more than the product. Found 30lt for just under $50 free delivery but its just too big for my kitchen.
