Hello Polyglot Dreams! So happy to see you uploaded a new video - and a very useful one at that. I am the girl from the Vienna concert, where we spoke Japanese and Greek during breaktime and you introduced me to your lovely wife!! I was so impressed by the Japanese that I forgot to ask you if you speak Czech, as I am currently learning Czech. You can imagine how surprised I was when I saw that your RU-vid bio even has a Czech proverb! :) Keep up the great work please, you are really inspiring to us who want to learn more languages!

Fantastic... please add me to Facebook and / or an email so we can set up a language exchange for Japanese and Greek.

I love ❤ simplicity ⬆️ and if you want to simplify complexity and bring balance...always have simplicity ⬆️ as essential. When I work on myself and also learn languages, I think to myself "How can I make this simpler for myself?". You have to experiment and find out what works for you as we are all different. For languages 👄💬 I make it simpler by making language 👄💬 learning a lifestyle...a hobby and not work with an end goal. I also welcome the language 👄💬 in like a dear friend 💕 and not force the language 👄💬 into my mind. I also go gently on myself and don't care if I'm not doing well but at the same time, I keep going knowing that I will learn the language 👄💬

It was a big pleasure taking some closer look at your other vids and getting to understand the successful and fascinating life you had before retiring. 👍

Thank you. For Chinese, I made a great effort to nail down the tones first with a lot of practice. You can learn using pinyin to study but it is best if you do it in combination with studying the characters.

Recently I also use WHY factor. This year I focused more on differences between Slovak and Czech languages, because I go there often to take pictures. I am gonna learn some basic Romanian to talk with locals and be able to make some pictures how they live especually in remote villages in the mountains. Without WHY I would not start.... Nice interview by the way😊

I've been saying thinking for a while now that what I call learning infrastructure is very important when learning. This doesn't just apply to languages though. I mostly use the following analogy: learning is similar to running a marathon. Where the distance is equivacal to the amount that you learn and methods of how you learn are equivocal to the infrastructure that you are running on. It's a lot harder to run a marathon through a swamp or on a beach than it is on asphalt.😊 The same goes for learning methods and the tools that you use. At nauseum repetition doesn't work as well as flashcards, memory palaces, analitical comparison, mindmapping etc.
@polyglotdreams
@polyglotdreams 6 месяцев назад
That is a very interesting analogy.

@@polyglotdreams I'm dreaming of making a MMO-RPG game for language learning where the languages learning parts are integrated into the game world as a whole. Everything would be designed to help with learning the language. People are often obsessed with gamification (including language courses), but gamification has very little inherent retention, aka people get bored of it quickly. I would say that you shouldn't gamify a language, but languafy a game. As a game has better inherent retention and fascination initiators than things that are gamified. A game world like this also has (at least) 6 areas that are important to take into consideration. 1. Environment, 2. Necessity, 3. Source of entertainment and information, 4. Frequency, 5. Interaction, and 6. Retention (making sure players continue to play the game. You don't forget what you've learned) I have most concepts of the game worked out, I just have to take and succeed at the step of getting a game developer to make it.
