Which is what sets him apart from every forced gay character in movies you see coming out (zing) over the past half decade. Good writing. Sure Shore Leave is Flamboyant, but he is more than his sexuality and that is something most hollywood writers don’t know how to write.
@@hiddendesire3076 I totally agree, and I especially love the scene where he calls pete white a sissy, and basically explains that he is flamboyant BECAUSE he is proud of his sexuality. Edit: I also love that he isn't a token gay character as the alchemist is also gay and the two act nothing alike.
I love the episode where him and brock are lettin loose on their pistols and you hear Shore Leave: “bam bam, gocha! Ahhh yeah, this is so intense! You can NOT change the channel now” xP
Brock's ability to detect when someone's in his car is is impressive, but I'm way more impressed by Shoreleaves' ability to let a woman know he's not interested and get her to leave him alone without being the jerk
There was this 1 girl who was bi I swear I had feelings for her but she said if she liked guy she would try something but that was 3 years ago But anyway she was a awesome friend it was funny seeing her threaten someone and she was a hunter she knew a lot about trucks and guns and was a stoner so she’s laid back
Shore Leave is amazing, out of the closet, unashamed, total badass. Literally sees Zeus and first instinct is to talk smack and pull out the firepower.
I've always believed that this is the correct way to write a gay character, he's a total badass who seems like a normal guy, these days every time there's a gay character in a show that seems to be their entire character but Shore Leave has more to his character than just being gay which makes him an actual character and extremely enjoyable
@@aidenfurry471 hes snarky and camp, and he owns it. But hes also a badass in the field, and throws around quips like its second nature. Al is another great example of a gay character in Venture, show seemed to be full of them!
@@StagFiesta exactly, when you compare Shore Leave to something like the live-action Batwoman the difference is obvious she was basically written with her only defining character traits being lesbian 3rd wave feminist who stalked her ex and the writers thought we'd like that for some reason? and he was written as a badass with a good sense of humor who happens to be flamboyantly gay, since they wrote him as more than a token minority everybody enjoys him but nobody aside from activists likes the poorly-written batwoman(the cartoon version of her was good though the one from "Batman: Bad Blood" was decently written)

Shore Leave is gay as hell and is one of the best soldiers on the planet. I'm not gay so I can't say whether that's what people might call empowering or not, but he's certainly not the froo froo weakling that the right-wingers would have you believe flamboyantly gay men are, that's for sure.
@@BigMikeMcBastard On top of that, he's actually a character, with feelings, a personality, comfort within himself to not announce to the world over and over he's gay and oppressed. He has hobbies, ex partners and tons of agents who still talk to him because he's just that nice, Brock as a best buddy instead of a hookup. Oh, and tons of talent. He even hangs out with the boys, he's such a character. Usually any gay character they come up with these days are lame compared to him. They just slap the gayness on and call it a day. Princess Bubblegum, Steven Universe Jewelry, the cops from Gravity Falls....you can tell it was just for brownie points instead of you know, rolling with the character. He doesn't let the gay consume him. He just so happens to be gay, but holds his own weight as an OSI/Sphynx Agent with a penchant for the sea breeze. Oh, and he's almost as dangerous as Brock.
Well the creators described how he deliberately plays up how outwardly camp he is, just so everyone understands that; yeah he's gay and he can also kick your ass anytime he wants.
I like Shore Leave because he's so unapologetically himself, and he's one of the most skilled characters in this show. I still think the shoot off better him and Hatred is one of my favorite scenes! He deadly, can cut hair, fashionable, can sail a boat, fly multiple aircraft, etc.
Everyone talks about how hilarious these secondary characters(there are no Side Characters in Venture Brothers, except the guys that die like the Doom Factory and the Evil Mystery Inc team) are and should get their own spin offs, when what makes Venture Brothers what it is is the interactions between these characters in the greater story of the Venture family rather then focus on just them.
Yeah I have thought about this. There are so many characters I realy care about and anyone who dies or disappeares is a legit loss. Perfectly written personalities.

@@ZekromAndYugiAndDrago123 they do a good job of this a lot of the time, but what annoys me is when they go out of their way not to write a woman to the point where it is awkward. the most ludicrous example is triana's mom never getting any lines, but there are a number of other woman characters in the show where it would make sense for them to say something and it's like "oh, they couldn't be bothered to hire a voice actor for this".

One of the reason why the venture bros getting canceled pissed me off was the fact that we don’t get any more moment like this from shore leave and dozens of other characters like 21 and red death
Excellent choices, I mean Red Death was introduced so late, but became so iconic so quickly. He is one of the best advocates of a work life balance I've ever seen in fiction; he's a devoted husband, a loving father AND one of the world's most feared supervillians. Plus the voice of Clancy Brown of course. It all makes him worthy of comparison with longterm options like Shore Leave and 21, who are both also great.

That bit with him diving in the water proves that shoreleave is the kind of guy who puts a funny bit over logic and it bites him in the ass. Been there 😅
I can't be the only one that would have loved to see an episode where Shoreleave takes Dean or Hank on a night on the town. Just imagine him taking them to clubs then having to protect them from the obvious hustlers and jealous guys and con men. Be a lot of fun.
I love how this series could come up with the best puns for character names. Seriously, there is a one off character named "Tank Top" who has a tank top made out of a tank with a full barrel on it. Also you'd think that holy armor would have come back into play at some point.
shore leave is just one of those things that make venture bros great. started as a one shot gi joe/village people joke transforms into a kickass crazy awesome nutjob.
Shore Leave is an expert blend of femininity, and masculinity. He's in touch with his emotions & sexuality, but doesn't let it control him. He is fashionable, but not really vain. He has a sense of humor that isn't restricted to sex or pop culture references. And when it comes to a fight, he is brave, resourceful, and reliable.

i love the fact that the gayest man in the show is best friends with the straightest man in the show. and i also love the fact that shore leave doesn't try to hit on brock at all. he's just his buddy and he has his own tastes, hence why he hooked up with al.

Shore Leave's approach to Captain Sunshine with the Cinderella story & a big gun is bada$$. Also rehashing the Operation game commercial with Hank + Dean to the annoyance of Samson & getting a nookie from Samson while Tom Paxton's 'All The Children' plays as background music was fun too.
The Venture Brothers is the best thing to happen to my 70’s & 80’s pop culture; Johnny Quest, G.I. Joe, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Dr.Strange, Dr. Doom, Blade, Six Million Dollar Man, James Bond, etc… More importantly, the premise of past and present heroes and villains playing by “the rules” as a backdrop to them going through the same struggles, failure, joy, and success that everyone can relate to. All and I mean all of the characters are thoroughly fleshed out and the dialogue is the best and although there is a good deal of violence, it’s usually because someone decided to play against the rules.

It's even better in context. Keep in mind this is a minor character, that works for a crossdresser that works a guy who hulks out. And these guys are so bad assed that Brock Samson looks up to them. And then you go ba k and find little hidden gems kinda like rewatching the infinity saga.
Never thought about that. Visually they did have that quick shot of Mr. Fahrenheit, the supersonic man, in the diner when Red Death and his crew were talking about kidnapping Jonas Sr. He was dressed like Freddie at Wembley with the white pants and yellow jacket.

15:52 Brock can play it off all he wants but I genuinely believe that Brock clapped his cheeks at least once. As an experiment, at least. He did kinda imply that he had a tryst with the redheaded guy who was guarding the president, that one time.
