Thank you so much for accepting my request to watch this movie. I knew you were going to love it! You are the first RU-vidr with a larger audience to react to this gem. And you didn't disappoint. We got to see a Kazzy dance, a Kazzy face, and a Kazzy cry all in one movie. Life as we know it is now complete. Hopefully this will land some more patrons and subscribers to your channel!

I have to paraphrase, but if my memory serves I recall reading or hearing that Phillip Rhee (Tommy Lee) wanted to make a martial arts film where killing your "enemy" wasn't the main focus of the hero's journey. The message of forgiveness and the healing process has stayed with me ever since I first saw this. It's one of my very favorite martial arts pictures. The fact that Tommy Lee and Dae Han Park (Simon Rhee) are actually brothers is something that I think makes the film even cooler.
@michaeltodd2012

The ending was a total surprise and I've never forgotten it. The "bad" guy, Simon Rhee, is Phillip Rhee's brother and was the fight choreographer for the movie as well. So, that is another surprise.

The Best of the Best is the perfect distillation of 80's martial arts movies. I loved it as a kid and every time I see it again I have a blast not despite but because of its shortcomings. I can still tell my childhood friends, "Tommy! No!" and they'll reply, "Coach! He's gonna kill him!"

"Burt" from the bar fight is played by Kane Hodder, who also played Jason Voorhies in several Friday the 13th movies. And unfortunately, 3 out of the 5 actors on the American team are no longer with us, having died at young ages. I also think that Best of the Best 2 is worth watching, even though it's more of a cheesy action movie, as opposed to an inspirational team sport movie, like this movie was.

Nice to find a reaction t9 Best of the Best, one of my favorite hidden gems since I was a kid. It never gets old and always holds up. I found it on accident one day on hbo when I was a kid and loved it. Then the sequel got announced and I saw the trailer and theaters, and me and my best friend couldn’t wait to see it. It’s not as perfect as the first movie, but it’s still very fun to watch. I never really watched the 3rd and 4th movies, which seemed so disconnected from the first two. The first is a classic, but the second one is still worth watching. I subbed to this channel just now a year after the video and enjoyed your reaction!

Great film; very underrated. What adds so much more impact to the story and the writing in this is that Tommy (Phillip Rhee) and Dae Han (Simon Rhee) are brothers in real life, which really comes through and makes that last scene so powerful. Side note: if you check out the channel by Scott Adkins (the channel is just his name), he has a series of videos called The Art of Action, and in one episode, he interviews Phillip Rhee. In it, you get some interesting insights on his background, as well as how Best of the Beat came about.

It was in an interview, I think it was "The Art of Action" with Scott Adkins, but Philip Rhee said that Chris Penn kept on nagging him to hit him with a full powered back kick. Chris Penn, who had a bit of a boxing background wanted to see if Philip was legit. He knocked the air out of him & Chris stopped nagging him & they were cool afterwards...they were talking about what a nice person Chris Penn was, lol. Scott Adkins' Martial Artist/Action Choreographer/Stunt Man & Women, etc... interview show is on RU-vid on his channel.

I’m a 3rd fan black belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate, I’m also a black belt in Judo, an expert in Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, American Kickboxing, Kung Fu, Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do & Muay Thai… I have studied some Tae Kwon Do, and what I can tell you is that there are some distinct elemental differences between karate & Tae Kwon Do, for one thing, you see Phillip Rhee _(Tommy Lee)_ & his brother Simon Rhee _(Dae Han Park)_ in the fight scenes, they have this _hopping_ style & the hopping is definitely a trait of Tae Kwon Do in particular… the reason I ended up as a 3rd Dan black belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate & never followed up with Tae Kwon Do is because I was studying both at the same time (because an unusual opportunity came my way to study Tae Kwon Do during a summertime away from school & I found that the overlap was just too much to be worth studying both, and I was already a blue belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate, so I continued with that. Simon Rhee is also a fight choreographer for _Cobra Kai_ which brings me to my second point. The competitions portrayed in *THIS FILM* is very much what _Karate Kids 1 & 3_ as well as the _Cobra Kai_ series try to make the _All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament_ into. They paint it as this _Winner Takes All_ ultimate fighting championship which is kinda what this competition is… like what James Earl Jones says “It was all a game to them…they had no idea what they were going up against…” and Tommy’s brother in the story gets killed… where as a Karate Tournament is not a real full-contact Karate Competition, it’s where multiple Karate Dojo’s in a region pick an all star team of the top students display traditional techniques & the competition gauges the teaching style of the instructors, the students’ ability to grasp what is being taught & the students’ ability to link & apply techniques they’ve been taught effectively… if it was what Karate Kid was portraying, it’d be all over the news “two competing karate gangs met up in the gymnasium of a high school Saturday Afternoon, there were three deaths, at least five were permanently crippled, and six lay unconscious in critical condition in an area hospital, while the grand champion is allowed to rape & pillage the neighboring towns…

I studied TKD some time ago and because this film was made in 1989 this version falls under the power era in which knockouts were more common than what you see today. Two major factions are prominent today; the Kukkiwon/WTF variation which came from the Korean Taekwondo Association and is used in the Olympics and the more traditional variation which is the Chang Hon/ITF version which is usually seen practiced by the North Koreans.

Taekwondo has a different origin from Karate. Karate is indigenous from the island of Okinawa. Traditional okinawan forms like Shuri Te or Naha Te were more oriented to the use of hands than kicks, and kicks were usually low. Modern karate has more high kicks. On the contrary, Taekwondo has its origin in some Korean ancient methods, mainly Taekyun, that still exists and is mainly a kicking method. Kicks in this martial art are more complex than any other. Modern Taekwondo also takes some hand techniques from karate and other martial arts. The protagonist of this film has done a great job modernizing classical Taekwondo, adding more techniques from western boxing and hapkido, the sister art of Aikido, more oriented to self defense and real combat, obtaining a more complete system. The ending of this movie really break the mold, shows the real values a martial artist should cultivate. Thanks for sharing.

Biggest difference in TKD and Karate is the vector of movement. Karate is linear, TKD is an arc. You really cant say much else because within each respective martial art is a world of difference, particularly TKD. Yes TKD has more types of kicks, but not necessarily a heavier focus on using them or in combination.

Taekwondo is Korean and means, Tae (feet) kwon (hands) do (way of) so, way of kicks and punches. And the man that invented it spent his life in Toronto!, later dying back in Korea. Karate means “empty hand” and came from Okinawa/Japan. Whenever you see ‘do’ in martial arts, it means “way/way of/path”. Judo is Ju (gentle) Do (way), because it is the gentle martial art. Bushido is Bushi (warrior) and Do, so, way of the warrior. Kendo - way of the sword. Aikido the martial art that uses the enemies energy - Ai (together, unity, adapt) Ki (spirit, energy) Do (way of), so the way of adapting energy…..and so on.

Taekwondo (pronounced "Tay" not "Tie") is just Karate with more kicking. When the Japanese invaded Korea they banned the practice of indigenous martial arts so Koreans went to Japan, learned Shotokan Karate, brought it back to Korea, added fancy kicks, and gave it a Korean name. Today Taekwondo is pretty much just kickboxing.
