Changing the oil in your BMW is one of the most important things to keep your engine healthy. Being able to do it yourself will save you a ton of money, and sometimes it's just fun to open the hood and get your hands dirty. In this video, I share some tips that I've learned from 4 years worth of oil changes on my E90 BMW 330xi.
Oil I use: amzn.to/2DZ3BY6 (6.8qts are required)
Mann Oil Filter: geni.us/HC3M
Oil filter wrench: amzn.to/2GKxMUL
Torque wrench: amzn.to/2EdXx0U

You should loose the filter, do not remove it, before draining the oil. This will make the draining much faster, as there is no vacuum created by the oil leaving the engine.
@markbeavers7155
@markbeavers7155 5 лет назад
You need to torque the filter cap. 18 ft lbs., same as the drain plug. Starting point and new o-ring can change the end position. Your blue dot may not line up when properly torqued. Also, Mann filters make the BMW filter. They just put a BMW stamp on the end. As far as oil, I prefer Liqui-Moly Special Tech 5-W30. I live in the south, so you would want to use a weight oil for the colder weather in your area. As long as your oil meets the LL-01 standard BMW recommends, you should be good.

Old school mechanic here, I have a 2007 twin turbo 335i , I use casto synthetic, but lately I been using liqid Moly. And yes I can notice a difference performance, quite smooth, when driving. And the longevity in the oil as well.

@amfareed30 Год назад
Which type and grade of liqui moly do you use?
@mikey358976
@mikey358976 Год назад
@@amfareed30 0W-40 liquid Molly, if you can't get that then 5W-40 is ok. If not liquid Molly the Castrol or Moblil one is pretty good. As for the oil filter I recommend Man oil filter.
@kevinp6025
@kevinp6025 6 лет назад
Another good thing to always do is to prime the oil filter. I pour about a quarter of a quart into the oil filter before I install it. Might seem small, but it doesn't add any mess, and it prevents the engine from any extra wear saturating the filter might cause.

Go for it baby,All you have to do is buy some special tools and you can do your own tune ups,oil changes,brakes,and coil and fuel injector replacement.Believe me, if you buy a bimmer,you'll never even look at a Detroit Special ever again.I have been driving BMW since I was seventeen so I know. As far as parts there's Beck&Arnley,Bosch,and Bremi.You do not have to get oe parts as they're pretty pricey.Best wishes.

Tip / Hack I do for my oil change :: Right before you screw the Oil Filter Cap back on, I pour like 2 seconds worth of good oil in the main tank and let it drain back out. This kinda reassures me that no old black oil is being mixed in with my good oil and you can see how clean it looks underneath coming back out.

I caught the dip stick joke instantly! LOL. I use Liqui Moli SAE 5W-40 full synthetic. I noticed that my E90 330i oil level would drop slightly every 10,000 or 15,000 km which I understand is normal. A bottle of Liqui Moli motor oil saver changed that entirely. Thanks for another great video.

I was promoted to National Technical Manager at the Houston, TX HQ. I then went on to be the Product Manager for Pennzoil’s heavy duty (diesel) engine oils. Bottom line - I can tell you with absolute certainty that Pennzoil is the best oil, backed up dynamometer testing as well as field testing. I know because I know the data.

The mechanic I use needed to change the oil in my 325i. He used Liquid Moly 5-30. I used Mobil 1 0-40 euro blend but, not anymore. The car got about a 100 extra miles per tank with the thinner oil. My next change I'm using a good synthetic 5-30. Color me convinced.

Liqui Moly 2332 Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 is excellent. It meets BMW approval and Merc approval. First hand I can attest that in my 07 Merc AMG 63 when I used Mobil 1 Formula M 5W40 I would have clatter on start up and ticking from the lifters if the car sat over 3 days. With Liqui Moly Leichtlauf 5W40 clatter on start up is gone and it stays in the lifters over a week...rarely do I have ticking. Good stuff and good in both my E90 and F30 BMWs.

It meets the same API oil standards as all the major oil brands, just read the label on the bottle. I've tried all the major brands before, Mobil 1, Castrol, Valvolive etc. Never thought any of them were better.

I just go with the 5w30 oem BMW bottles, but mine is an N54 instead of an N52 like yours. I always go with the BMW branded bottles, so I'm always sure it's manufacturer approved and when it comes to price, it really is not more expensive than the other good brands like castrol, mobil, liqui moly, etc....so it doesn't hurt either the car and the wallet.

For my N55 engine: for winter BMW oil which is Shell Helix or Pennzoil Euro Platinum 0w30, 0w40. All these 3 oils are the same oil produced by Shell under different brands name. If you do a lot of city driving sitting at the traffic lights or crawling bumper to bumper for length of time, is better to use the 40 viscosity grade. Then for summer Pennzoil Euro Platinum (again a Shell rebranded oil). They got all the best approvals from BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi and Ferrari. Or Liqui Moly 0w40 and 5w40.

Hey Justin, Im a big fan bro. I recently got my 07 328xi back in april and my exhaust is pushing white smoke out after about 7k miles. I changed the spark plugs, ignition coils, valve cover gasket (with everything that it also includes), harmonic balancer. Anywho... my coolant level looks stabilized, so im not thinking of it being head gasket, but I do think it might be the piston rings..... ive been doing a lot of research lately, ima go ahead and switch to 5w-40 to see if the issue is resolved cause my oil levels are always being depleted. Currently experiencing rough idles, random shut off that occured one time during transit, and not enough power, with check engine service light on. I tried an engine restore, and its cold out so its hard to see if theres a blue tint, but its white white as far as I can tell. You got any advice on what I can do to perhaps seal these rings/restore with an additive?, i dont think i wanna get into the mess of opening up the engine. Love you guy.

The best way of knowing how well the oil is working in the engine is to do oil analysis at every oil change. The report tells you metal contaminants, fuel dilution, life of the oil in terms of base number, and other oxidation reference values. If the base number is too high, you are changing the oil too soon. If it is too low, you are using the oil for too long. You find the sweet spot of oil change as the engine starts to get older in mileage. For example: I know my Acura MDX 3.7L engine took about 70K miles to fully break-in. My 528i 2.0L engine took about 55K miles to fully break in. Another great piece of information is the MDX optimal oil change interval is not set at 10K miles. In the BMW, I am still working out that information. With the information I have on hand at 62K miles, looks like the optimal interval is going to be around 8K miles.

As to that oil leak you had....I bet you a dollar that you had the O-ring in the wrong spot on the oil filter housing....if it`s all the way up top, you will get a leak. It has to be down in that second groove in the housing to seal properly (look @ 3:20 on your video). I use Mann filters too, also the same Castrol synthetic, changed every 7500 miles.

I like to use Mobil 1 ESP 0W40 in my BMW 120d. Read a lot of good stuff on it and also it's always one of the best oils in objective oil analysis. But since Mobil 1 doesn't offer a 5W40 LL04 that I personally like based on laboratory tests I might switch to the Motul x-clean 5W40 soon. My dad likes Castrol better, so I always put Castrol Oil in my dad's E90 and it also runs just fine.

You can also put some oil on the gaskets and washer when you put them in and it gives you a great seal.

I'm a dealer mechanic in a northern state. Any engine newer than 2015 we use 5w30, any 4 cylinder after 2015 or b series uses 5w20. 5w30 is still used for n55 and n63s.

And definitely don’t take to a “quick change” oil place! Step son did that and well basically they “lost” that center part on the oil filter cap. They put it all back together and didn’t tell him. After two weeks of hearing a nasty loud whining like noise, I finally suggested that we re-do the oil change ourselves. Found that the cap had been damaged, ordered a genuine OEM part and replaced the filter they had used with a Mann and put Castrol Edge 0W40 in it. Runs great now!

Martyn H i took mine to jiffy lube & they forgot to put oil back in it. I drove a few blocks before the engine shut down. They tried to deny it but finally ended up replacing the engine, car was never the same tho

How do you know if the oil needs to be changed? It only shows oil level.

2 more tips: Do it when engine is hot, oil will be like water and "fall" faster. Oil the rubber seal of the filter case.

I use on my BMW mobil 1 5w40 oil and I noticed the difference well when I turn the engine on when it's cold, oil a bit expensive but if it's worth it!

Which Jack Stand do you use? Which Jack stand adapter for the e90 Jack points? Could you do a video on properly and safely jacking the car for service...like oil? Do you jack the front center and then put jack stands, etc. Great channel.

For my 1994 e32 740i M60 (232,000 miles), I use Pento motor oil kit which includes Mann filter and accessories. All parts, as well as engine oil, are purchased from FCP Euro under their free replacement program. Buy your first part or oil kit and receive a refund for the same replacement thereafter. Enjoy the ride.

I use Motul 8100 X-cess 5w-40 in my 335xi. Will switch to Red Line 5w-30 in the future, it's ester-based oil.

Did this today on my e90 with a coolant change as well. My e90 must've wanted it's oil changed because as soon as I opened the filter housing cap it decided to leak EVERYWHERE that was a fun clean up job...

That happened to me once when I took the filter cap off before draining the oil. It was a big mess

Also forgot to tell you, its a good practice to take oil pan off and clean all that shiit inside and pan itself of course, but make sure you have that special metal gasket in hand, otherwise you end up with 3 days wait

I did not notice the model of your car, but I drive an M5 and M6 -- both V10s -- with a slightly different procedure. The oil filter rides on the passenger side near the oil cooler. I use Ravenol 10W60, a G.group V oil.

So glad I found your channel! I'm on the fence about getting a 07 Acura TL Type-S or a 2010 328i, been doing a ton of research on both cars and after finding your channel and seeing all the DIY videos you put up along with other informative videos, I think I'm gonna go with the 328 or 330. Been wanting a BMW for ever! (the TLS is a good looking car too though)

I think either one would be good, but BMW has a much bigger online community (especially if you get a 3 Series). There are tons of DIY's for these cars between my channel, BMW Fanatic and many more. The N52 engine which is what I have in my 330xi is one of the most reliable engines that BMW made in recent years
@snowowl4019
@snowowl4019 6 лет назад
That's one thing that pulled me to BMW. The huge online community and the fact that there much more common. For the Acura, it really was quite hard to find info on them. Very excited for the day when I can officially say I own one haha. Now as for going through a dealer or buying private party, do you have a opinion over the other?

I had an '08 Acura TL Type-S w/ 6-speed manual for a year. It's a good car for sure, but it needed to lose 200lbs up front, and be rear-drive, both of which can't happen. Also, TL lacked personality. I have a 2010 128i w/manual now, and LOVE it. That N52 motor has this turbine/electric motor-like smoothness, and the car feels dynamic, and responsive. Get the 328i.
