I can't imagine how hard it had to be for Marion to separate herself from Edith's character after filming. I mean, she didn't just portray Edith.....she lived, and breathed Edith! Absolutely well done!!
You may have already seen it, but if not, Marion talks a little about that in her interview with Graham Norton. Here is the link in case you need it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y6H8KAglepk.html
@@r.r.r9746 The real Piaf wasn't vulgar. She had her issues but she still kept a respectable image. Cotillard uses a very colloquial Parisian accent while Piaf spoke standard Parisian. Piaf was an alcoholic but she didn't made a spectacle of herself.
Black French that’s very interesting. Non-native French speakers would be unlikely to be differentiate between different registers in French,or be able to recognise their social significance. It is often people who, like piaf, have had precarious beginnings who set the most store by such things.
Yes on their first date, but she confessed to Marcel she did not like the taste of it. But it didn't matter to her because she was with the one she loved. So her favorite food is roast beef not so much that she actually likes the taste, but because it reminded her of her love and one of the happiest times of her life.
Melvin Samudio I just watched Allied and she was really good. The first time I had seen her perform amd so now I will just have to watch this film. That, and my late mother-in-law love Piaf and now her granddaughter is older.
I was an absolute mess watching this scene. She deserved the Oscar for this one scene alone. Her pathos was gut wrenching. You feel her pain as she cries, "Marcel! Marcel! MARCEL!!" and slowly watch her go out of her mind with grief. Every cell of her body morphed into Edith - damn girl, you nailed it.
Oh!!It's a tribute, a consecration for what she brought to France. Not a show, a great lady who is an integral part of our life. We are not in a football game. I always deny your way of consuming, the Americans. Do not take it for yourself but for Americans in general.
Erwan Bergot you seem to be terribly confused and ignorant regarding their statement. “Stole the show” is a turn of phrase simply meaning phenomenal. It has nothing to do with with consumerism nor does saying Marion Cotillard deserved an award make @God of Mischief necessarily an American. Your prejudices and pre-conceived notions are showing...
LaDivinaLover thank you for clearing that up for that idiot. People like her should not be that condescending towards other especially when it shows how really dumb she is by not understanding a simple phrase.
Let me tell you about this scene... remember when you were a kid and your hurt yourself really bad, like when you fell off the bike and your knee was bleeding? You may not have wailed but the tears were flowing really fast, you got choked up and your nose started running like crazy? That is how I reacted in this scene when I saw this film in the theater with my mom. We both love Piaf's music. I was so embarrassed, crying like a baby in the theater and my mom was comforting me by putting her arm around me and letting me bawl. I am around the same age as Marion Cotillard and I cannot believe that a person of her age gave such a performance. Not just the movement or the facial expressions, but she expressed such fragility and pain from deep inside which she so beautifully brought out on film. This is really one of the best performances I have ever seen.
Connor Jamison You wrote such a beautiful comment that I had to acknowledge it. The fate of all civilizations will always depend on the viability of empathy and, by extension, love. You reassure me that there is great hope. I learned about Marion and the movie from an interview with George Clooney. Asked who was the best actor of the last decade, he answered "Marion Cotillard" with no hesitation.
Cotillard's performance as Piaf is one for the ages, and I'll never forget how sweet and shy she was when she won her Oscar. She's been mostly wasted in peripheral roles in Hollywood films. She deserves some Streep-worthy roles.
It's amazing that Edith Piaf and Judy Garland both died at the young age of 47. Both lived lives filled with great artistic triumphs and personal tragedies.
Sadly, Billie Holiday did, too. Edith herself admired Billie for her voice and personal challenges, and felt a special connection with her, as both had been born on the same year.
I saw the movie in the largest movie theater in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Was sitting first row with a friend. I was captivated right away. Loved the movie. At the end, when the credits appeared and the music was still playing, no one seemed to move. I turned around and saw everyone still sitting down. It is really strange to see hundreds of faces crying. I had never seen this before in a movie theater.
The only time I've seen that happen was at a showing of Schindler's List, not long after it was released. I went back to see that film again, the next day. I'd like to see this film "La vie en rose" again. Marion Cotillard was superb, and deserved the awards she received for playing this role.
she was originally selected because she had Edith's eyes and when they found she could sing even though she does not sing much in the film, her performance makes me wonder why other actors and actresses in the best foreign film category at the Oscars are not nominated as well like this year the lead in Son Of Saul should have been nominated at least
For me it is when she's asked about what she'd do if she was unable to sing, to which she replies: "I could no longer live" - that's the uncompromising nature of a true artist, I felt this down in my soul. God bless Edith Piaf!
Marion definitely deserved the award she received for this movie. She portrayed Edith perfectly. Showing her courage and her softer side brilliantly well. Brings me to tears just watching. Best movie ever ! R.I.P Edith. Thank you for your voice.
I cried so so much in the ending of this movie, when the lights were on again I wasn't the only one😊. Terrific film and one of the best performances in cinema history by Marion Cotillard, a well-deserved Oscar
This film introduced me to Marion and damn what a powerhouse she is here. This is actually one of the best movies centered on a historical figure I have ever seen. Easily.
I saw the movie when Marion won her Oscar. Didn't understand French then...but couldn't take my eyes off Marion to read the subtitles. She was fascinating. Now a decade later, this last scene still gives me the chills. She deserves more roles that match her skills. Thanks for the upload.
I have always loved Edith Piaf for her unique voice but when I saw this film I also fell in love with Marion Cotillard because she could embody Edith's sadness, love and loneliness at the same time, sometimes she didn't need to speak only with her eyes and face expressions. I'm sure the scene when she's told Marcel is dead is one of the most difficult scene for any actor or actress cause she went to happiness and laughing to sadness and tears so fast, it's the scene that has made me cry the most. I'd like to think whenever Edith Piaf is she's happy for the homage to her memory this film represents and also with Marion Cotillard who was born to play this role, that's why she won every film contest she attended. But I think this film should also deserved the Oscar as the best film of the year!!!!!
Edith Piaf est la raison pour laquelle j´étudie français. Merci pour tous les beaux moments, Edith. Edith Piaf is the reason, why i´m studying french in Paris now. Thanks for all the joy, you´ve given me, Edith.
what a beautiful dialogue: Reporter: Do you pray? Ms. Piaf: yeah, for I believe in love I'm an atheist, but that's exactly what I think religions are supposed to be. That little piece of dialogue just made me cry
Great song, singing and acting! Marion Cotillard truly is the Best Actress and I applaud her Oscar! Thanks for sharing this touching part of the movie. With love from Canada, Evy
I will never forget when my husband and I saw this movie. What a fabulous film and an amazing actress in the role of Piaf. I would love to have given her an Oscar, a Tony, an Emmy and a Grammy. She was WONDERFUL. Thank you so much for posting this. Great to see this again. 47 years old. My Lord! God rest her sweet soul.
One of the best movies I have ever seen and THE greatest performance by an actress. Heart-stopping, exquisite, beautiful. If Cotillard did nothing else but this one movie, she would still be remembered as one of the greatest actresses of her generation.
Brilliant movie! Edith Piaf's incredible voice captivated me as a little girl, much later learning of her life story explained the strength, courage and determination heard within that voice.'No Regrets' (minute 4.30) Thank you 'Little Sparrow'. Marion Cottillard a stunning performance.
I whole heartedly agree with you. As a boy in my teens with all my teen angst and feelings of being misunderstood, for me the voice of Piaf was my balm. I so appreciate the movie of her story. Thanks for the upload!!
It is one scene with the whole movie and an entire life collaged... very powerful, but so is the scene where she performs her break through performance. It was a brilliant directorial decision, after all the drama of her preparation to have a sequence of her performance shot in silence with just a soft instrumental sound track. The exterior of life is always so noisy and dramatic, the deep interior observes in a silent calm.
@@cummiestcat I don't believe that she does, though? Now Edith Piaf had a very unique speaking voice that is pretty much impossible to copy. So she did a really really good job but it's nowhere near "almost identical". You can kind of tell that it's natural too.
Marion took voice lessons to improve her own abilities and to learn how Edith breathed and held herself, how she shaped her mouth, etc - she turned herself into a living representation of Edith Piaf, and it's astonishing - so much more than simply "lip syncing".
This is such a beautiful and heart-wrenching movie at the same time. I couldn't think of a better actor to play this role. Thank you for uploading the video.
The words and meaning of the song are extremely brave, and the woman portraying Edith here is kind of beyond words to describe. To say she nailed it doesn't do the portrayal justice. Breathtaking all around.
I just saw the movie this week... if any actress on earth deserved the Oscar, it is this woman. This is a performance of a freaking lifetime. Breathtaking.
One of the best endings to a movie I've ever seen. It looked like she was singing the song with so much passion, but it wasnt even her singing. Marion Cotillard's performance was absoutely incredible
The best film on the world ! It's my favourite. Marion Cotillard - amazing role(the best I have ever seen).Edith Piaf - incredible person. I cried at the end.
I remember the first time I watched it, my mom and I watched together and we were haunted by this last scene, as if our souls had been sucked and we were crying in awe with the miracle we had witnessed. I can watch this movie infinite times and I know I will discover something new everytime.
Edith Piaf s'en est allée un jour dans toute sa gloire et son immense splendeur, l'une des vedettes les plus rares dont les titres restent toujours aussi célèbres, ses titres, perdurerons à jamais à travers les ages !
Marion is brilliant actress Piaf great singer But who is the director ,make up artist, writer. They are also incredible to make this great movie. After this I want to see more Marion' movies.
It is very rare that Academy of Oscars award an actor or an actress who plays in foreign language movie but I confess Marion Cotillard is absolutely marvellous and amazing in the role of Edith Piaf, Great Performance
I can't remember a better performance by any actor in any film. Marion Cotillard stole Edith Piaf's soul, her body and voice and gave one of the best performances ever to be captured.
