I had two gallons of mung beans stored in a two gallon bucket for 25 years at my cabin, frozen most of the winter in Northern MN just kept in a bucket. I sprouted the seeds last trip to check germination. They all sprouted. I was amazed. I think being frozen November, December, January, February, March, really extends shelf life. Just kept in a bucket with a lid, no oxygen absorber or anything special. Beans, wheat, oats, rice are all seeds. Thanks for your advice.

I had rodent gnaw through the top of my plastic garbage can, and it is very heavy duty. I also had some critter gnaw the plastic snap closer off of my cooler. It knew to gnaw it off instead of the thicker sides! Creatures are very smart, don't underestimate their cunning and they never give up.

🐀🐀🐁🐀 They hate the smell of mothballs, because it makes it hard for them to smell anything else. Peppermint plants in abundance near any doors, or basement windows is advisable for the same reason. But peppermint candy or toothpaste does not work. They know the difference.

We use plastic photo storage organizing cases (cost is around $15.00 for one) for small seeds that we keep in their packets. Each case is divided into 16 individual spaces and each space holds an individual 4 x 6 plastic case. Each of those individual cases can hold quite a few seed packets (except for larger seeds like peas). For seeds that have a very short viability time (like onions) we also place them in a baggies before placing them in their plastic case. One case is for warm weather plants, the other is for cool weather plants. Our larger seeds are stored in individual ziplock baggies along with the original packet, then all ziplock baggies of, say beans, are grouped together in a larger ziplock baggie. And all those bags are kept in a plastic tote with a gasketed lid. Then all those seeds are stored in a cool, dark, dry room in our basement along with our other "food storage". We do germination tests in January each year of the seeds I intend to plant. If the germination rate is low we can plant extras...just in case. We have also found that as seeds get older they do take longer to germinate and the resulting plants take longer to mature. So at some point we have to decide that trying to use the older seed isn't worth it.

I want to do this except transfer the seed packs to mini mylar bags then use the photo organizer. Will last longer

We have two of these storage cases and love them! I placed a sheet on top which lists the seeds in that storage case. These are stored in a dark shelf in a cool basement. It's really handy to grab those storage cases in the Spring and bring them upstairs so we can plan our garden. Yes on germination rates! We'll test sprout them on moist paper towels placed in baggies.

Thank you so much. I've been keeping my seeds in the basement in their own packaging and that's about it. It's cool dark and dry so maybe I'll be lucky. As it is, I buy and stash new seeds every year. I will soak most of my seed overnight in water and this seems to really help them sprout and grow fast. I found a bag of black onion seed in the international section of our store and thought, "why not" The worst that can happen is they will not grow. But there must be tens f thousands of them in that bag. I have no idea what kind of onion has black seeds either. Thanks again and have a great one.

Till the time comes to use them as we live in a small apartment and management will not allow any use of the patio other than for sitting ( no BBQ NO PLANTS NO Nothing ) apartment life sucks 😎🇺🇲

I hear that! My apartment is tiny. I barely have room for me and my cats. There is no storage, only 1 closet, and the drawers in the kitchen won't open because of the new refrigerator that blocks them. Management here would have a goat if they found hydroponics in here when you can’t even have a fishtank! Luckily, we do have a wonderful Farmer's market! I'll try keeping some seeds from their produce.

Thank you for doing this. Make sure it’s an airtight package with no light. Best way. I store my seed packs in mylar bags. However I want to move the seeds from the packets they came in to mini mylar bags. So working on that. I also think keeping a working small cabinet with labels like A, B , C would be helpful. So you can grab beets or carrots quickly.

We buy many large butter and shortbread cookies from big box stores at Christmas- great for storing seeds - no animals can get thru the tins- always keep supplement bottles to store dried herbs etc- but will be keeping the small ones too and prescription bottles for storage inside the cookie tins- and will be buying small mylar bags- great informative video thanks

I have questions for you, where can I store tree seeds before germination? Where can I store it at? What seed storage temperature is the best for storing seeds before germination? Which temperature is the best for keeping them viable and making them live longer for a very long time? Which seed storage temperature is the best? Can I use a zip-lock and a freezer bag to store seeds before germination? Can I use zip-lock bags and freezer bags? Storing tree seeds in hot temperatures will make the seeds decompose (rot) and die, they will no longer be viable for that. If you store seeds in hot temperatures, it will kill all of the seeds. Please make sure that you reply into my comment.
