Thank you for framing the matter of Obi-Wan and Yoda's insisting Luke must confront Vader again not as their telling him to kill his own father, but as their losing faith in seeing Anakin and Vader as one in the same, and thus still deserving of redemption. I'm tired of the fan consensus saying that Luke is "better" than Obi-Wan and Yoda because he was able to see through the veneer that was Darth Vader and make a choice that transcended what the Jedi and Sith were telling him, thus making him a "Gray Jedi". Obi-Wan and Yoda have more experience with Anakin than anyone - of course they would lose faith in the possibility of his coming back. He's been Vader longer than he had been Anakin. But Luke, with no experience of Anakin other than the stories regaled unto him by Obi-Wan and Yoda, had just as much reason as they had experience to want to believe otherwise. That doesn't make him better than them, it just means he's operating from a certain point of view. Where Obi-Wan and Yoda look back on the memory of Anakin Skywalker with fondness, caution and regret, Luke chooses to believe in his legend.

If Vader and Anakin is the embodiment of the star wars saga, Obi Wan is definitely the spirit.

Obiwan felt that he failed his apprentice but I believe there was more to this now I'm sure Obiwan could have done more for Anakin helped him not turn to the dark side there was some attachment between both master and the apprentice we have seen it .
