I agree with you. I have been doing that for years. It also helps that you don’t have to fill up the filler pass as much. I’ve welded with welders that we’re blowing and going, and I had to wait on them to get their filler in.

Great points and tips Austin ! That's one thing I noticed on heavier steel welding projects as the metal warmed up after a few passes we would turn amperage down a little and weld bead quality was better . Oh at 1:34 I use that saying all the time after the Wife get's upset with me . " Looks like I have room for improvement " LOL ! Keep up the great work Austin .

I pretty much use the same amps I used in the root for my hot pass, so not so hot really, and get a good full fill in it. You mention about the experience that you build up in your hands and eyes that is so true, but also with what you hear especially when doing the root. Hey looks like you have a great set up in your truck ☺

yes you are right you don't have to have a hot pass screaming hot. Big inch pipe one would grind the crown of the bead down chasing the wagon tracks till they were almost gone then put in a heavy hot pass .Then you could have a heavier hot fill . spaghetti line 3&4 " henskin .125 wall would not buff or grind the bead .Start just passed the top button kind of sweep ( wave ) till about 2 oclock then just drag almost like a bead then whip on the bottom keeping the hot pass narrow with a very tight arc so the cappers don't get mad at you for gouging out the pipe . Good video Austin

I’m trying to get my head around an uphill open corner on a 6013 (not allowed a 6010) 2.5mm rod on 5mm plate at 90°. I was using 69amps and balancing travel speed for a good root is difficult, I have played with amps up and down and travel speed as well. Are you able to demonstrate (or have you done one already?) so that I can watch over and over again please? Also any tips or advice would gratefully received.

umm question, i was taught the hot pass was to be hotter than your root to burn out and bring to the flux layer any contaminates that may have snuck into the root. when you mean cooler by how much are you recommending

This is a kind of the opposite of welding fast to control distortion in a joint. HEAT input matters more in this case. The longer you spend putting the puddle in, the MORE heat you impart into the weld. More heat input equals more shrinkage in the root as it cools which equates to a proper reinforcement inside of root pass.

Hey Austin, what’s you technique for capping the bottom using 8010? I’ve got the top & belly down just need to clean up the bottom a bit. Keep these videos rollin.
@adamw.6488
@adamw.6488 2 года назад
not austin, but i just helped a younger guy today on his cap. we welding 42" with 3/16" 8010. usually run around the 160amp area on the bottom, weld straight on, or a slight push. whipping motion back and forth, you want to whip ahead to cool the puddle, then whip back and watch it wash out the edges. Repeat as you stitch your way down. A slight push helps flatten the weld and reduces undercut.
@bartbley1269
@bartbley1269 2 года назад
Long arc it .the puddle will spread out and you will have more control . I would do this as you whipped back and forth like a filler a mm either side of the bevel . do not fill the bevel any more than flush or you will have to play with extra metal . This worked for me to put a bottom on like a stack of dimes

can anyone explain that why 6010 has flame coming from The Arc? 😂
@semihotman1369
@semihotman1369 2 года назад
6010 electrodes contain cellulose (production from wood by chemical reactions). Current and arc create enough energy to burn cellulose and this will create CO and CO2 gases. Especially 6010 electrodes may contain more cellulose in coating comparing 7010 and 8010 (because you need more penetration for root pass). This can be changed according to manufacture electrode model.

I Kina disagree I’ve been welding pipe for 7 years aswell , and on my hot pass’s I generally go hotter . Not faster but definetly hotter but I also tend to not grind my roots very much so I need the heat to burn out any slag. Anything that I roll out o also turn up heat a lot 3 inch sch 40 would be like 90 amps root 110 hot 170 cap with 5/32
