My vote is for the Canon G7X. I prefer the wider angle (which the Sony lacks), and the audio sounds better as well. The Sony RX100 has exaggerated high frequencies and sibilance. This makes the wind very apparent. Never noticed any focusing problem on the Canon. Since the Sony isn't as wide-angle, you really notice all the jitter and wiggles when you walk. But I love all your videos, keep them up!
Thanks for making this. I bought the G7X years ago but always wondered if I should have gotten the Sony. This vid shows me that for a point and shoot, the G7X was the right decision. The G7X has a softer look, and most people (including you) just look better on the G7X. I'm upgrading my camera to the Lumix G85 as I've outgrown the G7X though. But I still love my G7X!
Huge props to this video man. I have seen several comparison videos now between these two cameras, but honestly this is by far the best. I love that through the entirety that you keep switching back and fourth between the audio. That was one of the biggest things for me. If i have to use the integrated mic then it is a huge selling point if the mic gives the right sound, and imo hands down the G7x takes the cake on that. I won't say that the sony mic is bad, because I'm sure on paper it might even be better than the g7x, but I hate that it has a bit of a tinny sound to it. Anyway much appriciated showing so much side by side in different light conditions, different settings (indoor, outdoor, windy, quiet). All around super stellar! It has helped me choose my camera and I think I'm gonna have to roll with the g7x, however that is mostly because I don't much care to shoot in 4k, or find the need for ultra high FR. I just returned the g7x II a week or so ago. Used it on my last Colorado mountain trip and by the end of the trip I found myself shooting mostly with my iPhone 7plus and GoPro and ignoring my g7xII. With insurance and all that it was about 800 from Best Buy for 150 more I could get the t7i creator kit which makes more sense to me. I just moved myself Ed. Moving a pain. Hope yours goes smoothly.

Hey Ed, another great video. I've owned both Sonys and Canons so I'm impartial (I now shoot with a GH5). For me the most important features for a vlogging camera is stabilisation, being able to shoot with an external mic, followed by the ability to flip the screen 180°. I was really interested in the RX100 as I have the Mk1 but the lack of a mic input made it a no no. Such a shame. Also from your clips the Canon has better colour rendition, but that's Canon for you. Sony does make excellent cameras though and the compact size of the RX is very appealing. If the Mk6 has external mic input, stabilisation, shoots in log and gets round the battery issues that plague Sony cameras, I'm buying it. Keep up the great work, you're always a pleasure to watch.
Big congrats on the 30K subs. That's awesome. As far as the footage, I actually preferred the Canon footage. Just comes across as better color and exposure. Maybe youtube plays a part in how the footage looks, bits that my opinion.
Thanks Jay! Sorry for the late reply. Yeah, RU-vid and individual monitors may play a role in how the comparison looks. I didn't do any color correction or brightening/darkening the footage, so it's really up to you how it looks. For me, I prefer the colors and exposure of the Sony much more...just seems to have more dynamic range and a warmer tone...but perhaps that's not for everyone!

I think gonna get the canon g7x mark II cos the color is better and the Audio not much Different between those 2. Xxxx focus great with Sony but yeah for reasonable price canon is the best and doing great job. Sony to way expensive but canon did a pretty good job itself.

MY 1080 hd videos that I record with any of my cameras ( Sony a6500, Nikon D5600, Canon G7X MarkII)don't play at full HD on my Mac desktop( it's a new one) or and on my mac air laptop. It degrades a lot. 4K works fine. The same footage plays perfectly on my Iphone and Ipad and 10 year old Dell.HD1080 is perfect when watching youtube or any other media, Do you know what the problem is? Thank you so much Jose
I like the canons colour better but sony looks bit more cinematic/depth of field is better. Sony audio sounds better and autofocus a bit better. Huge thing for me as a vlogger is having widest angle.. doing selfie vlogging, the more cropped in it is and closer your face is, the more it distorts your face

I've been toying with the idea of getting a RX100 MV and selling my G7X MII but side by side the Canon just looks better to me w/ color science, wider angle, and the image stabilization all look better, plus it doesn't have overheating issues like the sony does. I also could care less about shooting in 4k. The only real reason I'd opt for the rx100 is for the super slow-mo capabilities and the fast AF, but I just can't justify a purchase because of the overheating...dammit 😑
In your video, the Sony looks the most natural. Excellent quality. If it had an external mic, I'd run out and buy it tomorrow .... Like the wider angle of the Canon ....
I was told the Sony will over heat in 4k after 5 mins and will shut down. That is a no go for me.. I just ordered the canon mark 2 today to do my vlogs with.
Ed, as much as I think the 960 slo-mo is cool, I felt the overall image quality of your old Canon was better than the Sony. I know 4K, but aside from that I'd stick with the Canon. Keep up the great vlogs, I really enjoy watching them. You're doing a great job.

Aside from the narrow field of view and the lower-performing image stabilization, the Sony's dynamic range/colorization/etc wins out in my opinion. However, to each his own, thanks for your input!
Insane quality of content. I really liked that you filmed the whole thing with both cameras! Definetely getting myself a RX100V. Gonna go watch how to make a wind diffuser aswell. Do you have any recommended gear that works good with the RX100V? As in stabilizor or mounts etc. stuff like that. Thanks!

ABHISHEK PRASAD it depends on what are you doing when traveling. if more toward extreme activity,underwater ,scuba diving etc .gopro might suits.but if just video and casual photo .you can buy this because these are not weather sealing but Im pretty sure the audio quality are better the gopro.
Hey Ed. I've been a subscriber since you first got your Mavic. And of course you caused me to get mine. I really enjoy your videos and your style of vlogging. I was originally a Canon guy and heavy into still photography with DSLR's and L-Series lenses. But since I started in RU-vid this year I've changed over to Sony. I'm using the Sony RX10M3, the Sony RX100M3, and the DJI Osmo+. I've been wanting to upgrade the RX100M3 to the RX100M5 and this video has pushed me over the edge. Let me ask this. Are you finding any limitations with 4K recording time? I'm hoping you're finding that your vlogging style with lots of shorter clips isn't really adversely affected.
Hey Gary, thanks for being a subscriber and for watching my vids! Awesome that you're considering the RX100M5. There are some overheating issues with shooting in 4k...after 5 or 6 minutes of solid recording, you'll see the LCD screen dim and the camera pops up with an overheat icon. The camera will feel warm and it'll shut off. Of course ambient temperature is a big variable...it was pretty got when I recording this video, so that didn't help me. However, you're right about the shorter clips of vlogging...it probably isn't an issue. I see larger RU-vidrs like iJustine and Sara Dietschy and a few others use the Sony RX100M5 as their primary handheld, and that's actually what sold me! Good luck!
Stabilization and wider fov is better on canon. Dynamic range and quality is better on sony 4k, plus the slowmo feature is a bonus. But for a compact, on-the-go vlogging system, canon is hard to beat. The shakiness of sony is dizzying tbh. Now i gotta wait for the mark iii, maybe canon will add 4k and perhaps a better dr.
The good thing about the Sony is it DOES have stabilization when not shooting in 4k. However, the Canon's wide field of view is definitely hard to beat.

So Even though I personally prefer Sony Cameras, I do think the canon to me, has better colors, and doesn't seem like it is quite so washed out in the grassy areas and whatnot. But that is all I can really say I like about the canon. with the Sony, I do think the auto-focus is better, The clarity of like, your face and things in the closer range are better to me as well. I personally would probably buy the Sony, but for the price difference? I would heavily consider the Canon. Do you use any other point and shoots? 1080 test - Frankly, overall, I thought the Canon looked better. Certainly had better sound. Handheld walking to bumpy. Where's that gimbal went you need it!!

I tried that whole day-in-the-life vlog style for a large portion of 2016 (check out my earlier videos on this channel) and none of them really gained much traction here on RU-vid. Perhaps once I establish myself a bit more, people will click on those types of videos. Right now, a lot of those older vlogs still have under 100 views and 0 comments...meh. But I'm not done with RU-vid and I'm not moving for any sort of 9-5! Just rooming with a friend and getting closer to the bigger city. It's lonely living alone in a small town, and I've been doing it for 4 years with no sign of the end in that regard. Gotta switch it up! Thanks for watching, Greg!
If you have the time and feel the urge, take both out of automatic mode and shoot manual 1080p, 24 FPS, 1/50 shutter speed to get the correct/cinematic motion blur. You'll have to adjust the f stop up to make sure the image isn't over exposed without using any ND filters. The Canon actually has an internal ND filter you can turn on in manual mode, which is very useful. In the G7X Mark II you can film in 23.98, ~24 FPS, maybe the old one you cannot, I'm not familiar with the Mark I. I use the G7X filter adapter kit goo.gl/JuNjvT and Filters for 52mm adapter kit goo.gl/t44xiz to be able to turn down the f number and focus on my subject more and achieve that nice background blur bokeh effect.
Thanks James, unfortunately I've since parted ways with my G7X. I do miss its FOV though, and the Sony overheats when shooting 4k for more than 5 minutes or so (didn't realize that when I made this video). However, they both have built in ND filters, and I occasionally use polarizer on the Sony for increased image control. They both have good and bad things, but ultimately I think I prefer the colorization/autofocus of the Sony and the FOV/touch screen of the Canon. Audio quality isn't a huge deal between the two since I can just apply a bit of low-end boost to the Sony and get a much more rich audio.
Green color cast on Sony and the Canon can´t get a single auto-exposure properlly, seems Sony has better DR, my point is both are too expensive, either this cameras are not in same league in price and features.
The Canon looks really overly saturated and makes you look like a toy. That DOF on the Sony though... kept up with you almost the entire time when the Canon struggled. I'm sure with the Sony as well during editing, you can dim the brightness down a hair and color correct the footage to be a bit more accurate!
The canon looks so much better , the audio on the sony is better but honestly the canon's audio is not half bad at all i think the audio of it is good enough
