Hi! I love your videos so much! They really have helped me to learn and improve my watercolor. I have a question, how do ii recognise the difference between opaque and transparent colors and what is the difference? Thank you!
@WaterColorMisfit
@WaterColorMisfit 6 лет назад
It's easy to figure out if you paint is transparent or opaque! Simply paint a permanent black line on your paper - let it dry. Then paint your watercolor on top - the transparent colors will seem to fall below the line and the opaque one's will seem to rest on top :D If you watch my last video - I did this in my watercolor journal :) I'll provide the link here for you :D Hope that helps! I LOVED this....not a runner but, I fell off my yoga matt 5 years ago and I am getting back to it. And of course, to stay injury free, I have to start right back at the beginner level. SO, this tutorial of yours was just BRILLIANT for me as I have been trying to understand the ins and outs of watercolors for years. An acrylic and mixed media artist for several decades now, I have always tried and failed at watercolors but I am slowly getting there. You are a great instructor, because clearly you know your stuff, and, you speak extremely well (no ums or uhs!!) so, out of more than a dozen channels, I just subscribed to yours! Looking forward to more!

Pastel because the colors look more softer and the paintings look more cuter. And because paintings look more enjoyable to the eye with pastel colors. Also I just found out about you and I’ve already subscribed and followed your insta. Keep up the good work and I’d love to see you maybe do a challenge video or an artsy haul. Hi, Misfit. I saved this video months ago and came back to watch again. I am having much trouble getting started as a new watercolorist. I, too, love transparency, the ethereal luminosity of watercolors. However, it feels to me like I am going to take my first bungie jump but I have a dreadful fear of heights at the same time (as well as falling/hitting the bottom). I've had my paints and brushes (new, sparkling new) and paper waiting for me for months. I have jars of water that I change out, in case I feel ready. Literally. Ok, years. It's like I'm standing on that bridge but afraid to look down, let alone jump. Frozen. Yet I sure do hope that there is a possibility I can do this. It was really hard for me to even say this. But your voice and manner is kind, so maybe, maybe, I can do the first part of your recommendation. Thank you. 👀💛 And I will look to see if you did a tutorial on a 🐰

Oh my!!! There are 7 thumbs up on this post. Thats a lot of people having this problem. You need to give yourself permission to just play. Not to worry about the cost of watercolor paper, which was my problem at the beginning. Think of it as, well if I went out to dinner and a few drinks how much would that cost? As a beginner you are not going to have a beautiful watercolor picture your first few times. Accept, you are going to fail, but each failure is a great learning lesson for the next painting. Play around by swirling some colors on your paper. Ask yourself questions. What would this color look like if I add more water, or less water? What do these two colors look like if I mix them together? How thin of a line can I get with this brush? How thick of line? Can I make a circle? A square? A tree? A leaf? Play a lot!!! And find someone here on U-tube that teaches beginning watercolor that you like their style of teaching. In watercolor learning the pigment to water ratio is very important. No one can teach you that. That is something you have to learn by doing.

Love the beginning tips and techniques, even if I am more in the middle range with respect to experience. It's amazing how sometimes you just forget the basics as you move along your journey with this amazing medium. As for my color preferences, I primarily do botanicals, so my favorite colors are the pastels, but also do a fair amount of landscape and use a few more jewel tones when painting those. I have to say I love your laid back approach to watercolor and you have a lovely teaching ability! Oh, the animal...a tough one to answer, but if I had to pick one I would say a dog, but for me you can't go wrong. Thank you so much for sharing your time and talent!!

Your videos/camera work are so well done! I, too, have hit a wall in my painting efforts regressing to a meltdown a couple of weeks ago. I just could not reproduce a photo I saw and that was it! I was done! A few days later I realized I needed to get back to basics. I’m in 3rd grade (painting wise) trying to do high school trigonometry!! Now I’m back on track. Color wise, I choose my paints based on the mood of the piece I’m doing. A landscape can be both light and bright or dark and moody, however flowers for me are nearly always bright. I think choosing colors is a personal choice the artist makes that reflects or compliments her/his style of painting.

Your videos are so beautiful and peaceful Carrie. I always feel like getting all my paints out and organising my art materials when i watch them. I am not sure which category my preferred colours of watercolour would fall into. Keep up the good work!

Hi & a fun demo video so thanks, I have left the watercolor media because I have to take the time to plan it out. With acrylic it's more forgiving -dries quickly so I can paint over. Plus I can vary when I look to use the translucent acrylics at times. You pointed out about the sheerness of watercolor and you do a fine job with good examples & practices to do. By the way I'm a cat lover if I had that choice.

I loved this video. More like it would be helpful. I would be happy to see either the dog or bunny painting, so I’m telling you here since I assume there wasn’t an option for either! Glad to see your dog is up for jogging with you now. I hope she is 100% well and stays that way for a long long time.

I definitely prefer the pastel tones over the more saturated jewel tones! I prefer the images to be a little more subtle in color and I tend to find that more aesthetically pleasing. I absolutely love how well produced your videos are! It never ceases to amaze me and you create wonderful pieces with incredibly useful information delivered in such a calm, soothing manner.
