with menopause it’s brutal and your mental health. Some people have go though menopause with less symptoms, they will try everything that mention just for release and they don’t help. That can be very expensive eg. Jamison menopause pills and herbal complex and the market. It doesn’t seem help.
It's crazy I didn't know we go through so much as women and menopause. It's messing with my mind anxiety, mood swings, tiredness. Many more oh my sleep too. Urinary issues. Need I say more.

Thank you Thank you Thank you for talking about menopause! I'm a 57 year old woman who has been going through it for years now and NOBODY talks about it! I talk to all the young ladies I know about it because I don't want them to be ingnorant like I was. I tease that i've turned into some kind of alien that I don't recognize LOL! Thank goodness the hot flashes are done! And as always thanks for reminding people that they are in charge of their own health because it's true. Have a very blessed day gentlemen :)
I just turned 40 and in the perimenopause stage. I know nothing about menopause besides the basics. I wish people would talk about it more. Because it impacts much more than physical aspects.
Thank you for creating this video about menopause! I could have used it several years ago when I was going through menopause. I never had hot flashes but did have extreme anemia from heavy menstruation and serious brain fog at the very end. My post-menopause life is fabulous!
I loved this video! Well, I love all the videos by The Docs! Having been through menopause 20 years ago, all I can say is, Thank God I made it through! 🤣 Thank you, Dr. Steyn. I love your personality. Menopause would've been so much easier if I had a doctor like you back then! Thank you, Drs. Zalzal and Weening. I'm glad you made it safely through the video!! 🤣🤣 It was difficult wasn't it? 😆😆
@@mistybailey It was awful!! For instance, I was sitting next to a friend one time when he asked if I was having a hot flash because he could actually feel the heat coming from me. Nights were the worst. I was always kicking off the covers then piling them back on. And the anxiety was so bad I was put on antidepressants. Back then there wasn't as much knowledge as there is today. So, research for how to help yourself. Don't try to tough it out!! I finally found that St. John's Wort (correct spelling) works great for my anxiety. I wish I knew about it back then. My menopause lasted forever! Or at least it seemed like it! 🤣Good luck Misty!!
When I had my first hot flash, I thought it was a heart attack. Menopause knowledge is so important. I lay two towels on the sheets every night. After a hot flash, peel of one towel and tell myself to go back to sleep. Thanks for your video! ❤️
I did the same thing with the towels... girl you got to try HRT it's been life changing!! I had had a partial hysterectomy in my early forties and then had my last remaining ovary removed when I was 52... I woke up in the hospital that night with my first full-fledged hot flash and thought I had a raging infection and was dying... I had no idea it would hit you that fast that hard... It was beyond shocking! I was pissed at myself for not knowing that and I was pissed at the doctor for not forewarning me. I rang for the nurse because I was just burning up from head to toe and she came in and examined me and then she kind of looked at me and grinned and she goes oh honey that's a hot flash. I thought I had been having hot flashes but let me tell you what... what I had that night was nothing compared to what I had been having. It was insane! I get testosterone and estrogen pellets and take a light dose of progesterone every night.... I haven't had a single hot flash since I started. I'm sleeping through the night peacefully... easily lost 20 lbs and my energy level is like that when I was in my twenties. My libido is back to... So much so I just recently sent my husband in for blood work to get him on something so that he can match mine... I'm sure his testosterone level is low too. Oh and I've become a much nicer calmer person again 😘 Not sure where you live... But here in the US we have clinics you can go to an easily have all that done. My daughter works in one and is the one who pushed me to do it... She got the biggest Christmas present this year LOL Good luck & stay strong Sister 🥰
So very grateful for you two ... and your guests ... with these videos. Not one of these productions has been irrelevant nor untimely. Very well thought out, with wisdom and kindness. Well done, well done and thank you.
Thank you for doing a segment on Menopause. It’s very much needed and helpful. Great information. Unfortunately, the doctor spoke so fast that it was difficult to understand her. Please invite her back but tell her to slow it down a bit.
You guys made me smile first thing in the morning! You guys ARE funny and relatable. Menopause is a great topic. For me, exercise has been my saving grace during peri menopause. I also started counting Macros a year ago and it has helped me stay on target with my protein intake. It also helped me lose some extra weight due to overeating. Alcohol was a total trigger for hot flashes/palpitations so had to ditch my amigo Tito 😂. Things we discover by tracking our food! Thank you for a great video!
Ah yeah the menopause thing…so important for all of us to understand….thanks for bringing that Doc to explain that into your videos, I have 4 other sisters menopausing too, & my son gives us very confused looks when we’re together hot flashing in our family get togethers…a normal stage of life 😓
Thank you for this video! I’m 56 and just hit Menopause. I’m Postmenopausal now. I have chosen not to take HRT because I had an Aunt (maternal) who took it during Menopause and developed breast cancer. Breast cancer doesn’t run in our family. I spoke to my Gynecologist about all this and she didn’t think it was a good idea for me. I have developed AFIB and had to have the Watchman put in my heart because the blood thinners caused a lot problems for me. It’s a hard time for women. Compassion is important. Thank you. ❤
Love this she's so funny and cute and you guys are totally awesome. This is really really informative I want to get her book thanks guys, you're the best doctors great attitudes great personalities.
Dr. Steyn, thank you 🎉. I almost wanted to cry when I saw your topic! I went through menopause 13 years ago and no one wanted to hear about it or even talk about it; even my Gal Pals and Colleagues. My Dr. vehemently opposed HRT, or bio identical therapy and instead chose to “drug” me with an anti-anxiety pill as I was experiencing anxiety, lack of sleep, mood issues and racing heart. Well on the “other side”, exercise, mindfulness and support have made a difference though I have to say I am not the same person I was before menopause. I have made it my mission to openly talk about it with friends and family so that this topic is made to be comfortable to discuss. Dr Paul and Dr Brad, thank you both for all you do by educating all of us on a plethora of topics. Dr. Steyn is amazing!!
I wish I had seen this video when I went through menopause! Great information for any woman going through this! Great job Docs. I would love to read her book! So much to learn. Love you Docs!😊😊😊😊
I started HRT and it has been life changing!! I had my last remaining ovary removed at 52... And the night sweats were horrendous from day 1... Which as knowledgeable as I consider myself to be on this matter I was shocked and surprised by this. I started HRT 6 months ago .. Sleeping so good now... Exercising without it feeling like a punishment... I've lost 20lbs easily.. and even my complexion looks better!! I personally recommend HRT from the woman/patient point of view! And nowadays the testing is so much better and there are clinics that can do it for you rather inexpensively. Do it Girls!! 🥰
@dee marlin my doctor implants pallets of testosterone and estrogen in my butt cheek... Then I take progesterone in oil and a gel cap at night to help me sleep and be a protective against the estrogen. It's been fantastic!
Love and never miss your posts. The knowledge, humor and banter between you too really makes the difference. So many times online docs are stuffy and toooo serious. Thanks so much!
Thank you again for all the great information. While the time for this to apply to me is long past, it is wonderful that this information and discussion is presented for everyone. Not just the females.
BHRT has been a lifesaver for me! Thank you for addressing this utmost important issue for ALL women; I really hope you will follow up with a HRT/BHRT discussion. 😃
Thank you so much for this video. I'm suddenly going through menopause because of ovarian cancer. After surgery and treatment nobody talked at all about the changes I would be going through. I really found this video so helpful and informative.
You must not work where I work! The other day the lunch topic was using c-- as lip balm! I kid you not! Talking about menopause would be rated G versus the rated R topics it can be!
Excellent video, like usual, lots of important information. I appreciate your honesty that you don’t practice all you preach but do your best living a healthy life!
I remember menopause. At times, it felt like my blood was fizzing and I'd get agitated and irritable. I had one bad hotflash and had to sit down on the floor in the middle of Target. 🤷🏼
Thank you so much for the YUKA app. I loaded this app on my cell and will use it when I go shopping for groceries or cosmetics. I have been known to carry my Milady's Skin Care & Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary with me since I'm a skin care specialist. This may end up being a very good alternative to bring with me. I'm loving your series.
Hi Docs, I found out what man-o-pause felt like when I was in my 50’s and my testosterone had fallen to a dangerously low level. Hot flashes galore and other nasty side effects. I don’t know if you’ve done a video on testosterone. If not, please consider it. High levels are also dangerous. Thanks Docs. James 🙋♂️👍
Just got my husband in to get all his levels checked...haven't gotten the results yet ...but as a woman starting HRT just six months ago at 59 it's been life-changing. Full disclosure one of the additional benefits was a libido like a teenager again... Which is why I sent my husband in because he is not keeping up with me. I'm excited for him to get on the same page with me again!!
I’ve got the worst hot flashes & night sweats from hell! I had a complete Hysterectomy/Oophorectomy in August 2021 and didn’t start menopause for almost 6 months later then it hit me like a ton of bricks! PCOS & Endometriosis and awful heavy periods & 4 miscarriages! Menopause has caused my blood pressure to flip out & my heart rate is high, SVT 😢 Insomnia from hell too…NO HRT for me, (2) time Breast Cancer Survivor, 100% Estrogen Driven
I downloaded the Yuka app it was an 👀opener when I scanned the foods in my pantry. Thanks for the tip and awareness! I will be using it when I go grocery shopping.
Thanks Docs! I still have at least a decade until menopause, but this is great information for thinking about my future health and what I can do now to have an easier transition. I look forward to checking out Dr. Steyn’s book when it comes out ❤ I also learned she was a Team Canada Triathlete, how cool! 🇨🇦
I had my ovaries removed 10 years ago because of a huge ovarian cyst. After they were removed, I had a few nights of night sweats. Then about a month after surgery, I started having cold flashes. I literally felt like I had cold radiating out of me. I would get goose bumps and shiver. Through my research, because NO ONE talks about it, I found out it is through the same mechanism that hot flashes happen. Cold flashes aren't as common, but they are freaking miserable. They are finally getting better and fewer and further between.
Aged 55, first year M, love coffee, don’t drink alcohol anyway, eat Mediterranean style with calcium foods eg high protein plain yoghurt, unsweetened high protein soy milk, sardines, need to monitor calories else menobelly, RT daily to tell my muscles not to atrophy, sarcopenia. I am on HRT estrogen progesterone gel to help with osteopenia, prevent CVD, Dementia. Thankyou for an excellent video again❤
I had a endometrial oblasion due to having long periods lasting longer than two weeks. One time my period lasted a month with cramps wrapped around my back as if I was in labor. In 2012 the horrible cramps came back with light brown blood. I then had a hysterectomy. I am now in menopause, have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes and obese. I don't feel like my self anymore.
Gotta get that weight down. That will help with the high blood pressure, sleep apnea and diabetes. I too have to work on losing weight. I have limited mobility. I need a knee replacement. Can't get it until I lose weight. Also severe arthritis. Weight loss will also help with that. Come on! We can do it! Let's lose weight this year. We deserve a better life. Wishing you peace, blessings and good health!
"So this book is non-fiction, I assume?" LOL Good one, Dr. Zalzal. Dr. Weening does a great job of keeping the guests on track if the convo starts to wane or wander. He just subtly steers it back on course. Love the woman-oriented medical videos, too. Thanks!
I love this video! I'm looking forward to reading her book when it comes out. TY again for your excellent content! Could you leave us the link to the app you mentioned? Please and thank you! ❤️❤️
I was 39 when I went through it, same age as my Mom did. Just after that, I started adopting cats! So much easier to deal with than relationships with men! 🤣🤣🤣. Be aware that men do go through a form of menopause too.
Oh this is an awesome topic. I call it wet seal syndrome lol. An orthopedic surgeons nightmare lol. Hereditary factors can come into play, ask your parents about symptoms. Men get " menopause too" an early symptom in men is the urge to buy that sports car &:toys lol. Mood swings yes. Agree exercise Yoga etc. Thank you so much 💜
I have a helpful hint for dealing with hot flashes. If you are in a meeting, trying to look professional and a hot flash starts, just hold a bottle of very cold water in each hand. It really does help. Another idea is a bandana with small frozen ice packs around your neck. It helps cool the carotids and blood to the brain. Life after menopause is awesome and you will have earned it!
Menopause affects your entire body. It's not just hot. It affects your vein strength. Your veins actually weekend during menopause.. causes muscle aches in your body, headaches, insomnia, yeast, overgrowth, digestion issues...
I'm 55 and I've been having a hot flash at a rate of almost once an hour that last for about 3 minutes every day for the past almost 4 years. In that time I haven't slept through the night once without waking up atleast 3 or 4 times feeling so hot that I might spontaneously combust.... I am so miserable and the thought that this could last for a decade or more causes me great despair. Nothing helps!!!!
When I was going through menopause I was outside in snow storm, everyone was bundled up but me. I was loving the cold and the steam coming off the top of my head. 🤣
I missed the whole side effects of menopause. I watched my mother go through it. She would have hot flashes with beads of sweat on her face in a flash form so fast, it would startle me. When I was in my twenties I read that diet can help menstruation discomfort and relieve the side effects of menopause. I feared the discomfort so much that I faithfully practiced the advice for both, and also had painless periods. I'm 65 and still waiting for the hot flashes, think I'm way past that.
I was so sad to find out my periods stopped and at one point, I was prescribed birth control pills. This restarted my period again with clots and a heavy flow, so I knew this was not something I needed to be taking. I did have a bone density test which was perfect. HRT was never suggested or offered because I didn't need it. I did take soy tablets/replacements for a short time. I did gain weight and massive belly fat which during COVID I gained 20 extra pounds, which I am losing due to my joint pain. I learned a long time ago, the best medicine for depression is ACTIVITY and WALKING.
No doubt the guest doctor knows what she's talking about...But I have difficulty understanding her due to thick accent. Hope you guys can consider doing subtitles :)
Thanks Dr. Steyn. You guys are great at picking important subjects that we all deal with but which too often get overshadowed by the big topics like heart disease, cancer and other big ticket items which hog the limelight. P.S., As ever, Doctor Z can be counted on to sustain the genius of the moan-inducing Dad Joke. P.P.S., Have there been any studies on the effects of the Dad Joke on the human nervous system?
@@Joy21090 I partly agree. The part I don't agree with is disregarding our human ability to chuckle while enduring existential pain. This is a complex and wonderfully human trait which warrants a deep study as we are all presently going to hell in a hand basket and need all the help we can get to overcome our human failings. All hail doctor Z!
Clearly two things barely touched on in med school - nutrition and menopause. Menopause truly is so different for each individual woman. I never had a problem with my periods, never took meds for anything ever and for 8 years I've been trapped in menopausal hot flash hell. I'm soon 59 still with regular periods since 1976. I have tried every HRT offered and finally found my combo (estradot patch and prometrium as a vag suppository as I have severe reactions to progesterone to include Mirena IUD, bioidentical and synthetic when swallowed). I've tried coming off twice but with hot flashes every 3 minutes around the clock, I cannot. I have everything tested annually to make sure I'm not developing cancer. Apparently when taking the right form and the right dosage, we dramatically decrease our risks of heart attack, dementia and osteoporosis. The female body was not designed to function optimally without estrogen. My friends who come off HRT go from a grape to a raisin in record time, it's sad to see how profoundly and rapidly they decline. Unless you have an estrogen dependant cancer risk, I think HRT should at least be considered. On a side note, I'm not overweight, I exercise, eat healthy and do not smoke, drink alcohol or caffeine nor take any drugs other than thyroid medication. I tried all the herbal suggestions like black cohosh, etc and they did zero to help. Estrogen is the answer and progesterone is necessary if you still have a uterus. On YT - MENOPAUSE TAYLOR is incredibly helpful, she's a MD. Good luck ladies and also the partners who support them. Just sharing my experiences, not here to argue or debate.
Thanks for sharing. We agree HRT plays a huge role in the first ten years of menopause and the literature supports its use for hot flashes, cognition, sleep and urinary difficulties in addition to osteoporosis
Great video. I noticed in the text section below your video it says you are talking about rehydration drinks. I have pretty good grammar and have done some transcription work. If you need someone to do captions for your videos, I be interested in doing that. There are quite a few errors in your captions. Maybe they are currently being done by AI? Anyway, just throwing that out there. If you'd like me to help out with your excellent channel, I'm here. I like words! Words : )
It would be great if you could address when one’s symptoms are abnormal. A friend is going through what I went through many years ago when I was menopausal. It isn’t always irregular and sparser periods….there is also the phenomenon of a period that just doesn’t end….weeks and weeks. I went through several months of it before I got an answer….which was hysterectomy.
My goodness, yes! Now you have said that, I can see it. How funny! Bit miffed I didn't notice it, as a well-loved series here and I'm not that far from Highclere (Downton Abbey). And Dr Weening reminds me of a bloke at work - he's a goof too!
@@bunnybugs280 Well, get to Heathrow. You're by the M4. Go left for SouthWest/Bristol/Wales. Get off at Junction 13 (I think) for Newbury, go right and you're 10 / 15 minutes away.
I remember my mother sat me down at 11 years old and spoke to me about menstruation. I am 48, and not one person has ever talked to me about menopause. I haven’t had a period in 18 months. I don’t know if I will do HRT….
Thank you, Drs. Weening and Zalzal and Steyn! Very helpful and informative. Dr. Z., You still have your chicken wing and chocolate sponsorship. Lol! By the way, I really like your new opening sequence.
I blame doctors for the lack of information and knowledge about menopause. Waiting until women hit menopause before discussing it is far too late. Women need their doctors to be honest with them about these symptoms and issues before they have to deal with them.
I'm started on HRT At age 69 And I love it and will take until death There's nothing that will help hot flashes of night sweats on the market but HRT I don't have to get up at night changing the sheets and my clothes Go ever 45 minutes with hot flashes I was just slowing dying So HRT saved my life gave me something to live for
I do not drink alcohol due to Afib. I also drink decaf coffee but every once in a while will drink a regular glass of iced tea but does not do anything to me bc I do not drink it all the time. My GYN told me to do weight bearing exercises which im going to start. I do not sleep good at night i wake up every like 2 to 3 hours and then go back to sleep and then im sleepy the next day. Thanks for all the menopause info it was great. Where do i get the app to scan the foods would love to have it. Let me know. Thanks
@@TalkingWithDocs I found it as a matter of fact my daughter showed me. Thanks oh my goodness all the bad stuff in the foods is unbelievable! I threw all my stiff away that I scanned that was bad and poor. I will be going to the supermarket and scan before I buy. Wow! Thanks so much for the video!
Symptoms similar to when your thyroid is not working properly. Worth comparing the two conditions. 5 years of menopause then Graves’ disease. Get a regular blood test once your over 50.
Hi girls! Can any of you please tell me which where your very first signs of perimenopause, especially you who got into it early, like late 30's-early 40's? Did you have any other signs before a real hot flash? 🙏
Thanks you for this video doctor's what about for someone who has been depo shot to help control the very bad menstrual cycles and how do u now when you will get menopause. I'm 44 years old for 20 year's ago being on the depo shot. Which I don't get my menstrual cycle anymore since I've been on it.
I'm 62 I've had hot flashes bad sweats for years since 50years old my neck will get so red as a cherry I was irritated etc. my doctors never gave me nothing I would tell them and tell them
Yes, indeed. Couldn't make it up in England now. Who would have thought we would get to this - 'we' haven't though. Again, it is the minor, minor minority who seem to be able to orchestrate 'thinking'.
Hot flashes are more like hot years. I feel it more as an overall hot blooded state with times where my ears and face get very hot and red. I have my air conditioning set almost year round at 67-68 degrees and my freezer door is full of ice packs including ice "hats" that are marketed for migraines. I do get headaches now more in perimenopause also so the ice packs are a necessity and a lifesaver. This video is basic. Do some research and you'll see there are many, many more signs and symptoms in perimenopause and menopause that women can experience. Try to find a physician who is educated in, and willing to test various hormonal levels and treat with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.
I think you can turn the transcript on. Yes the South African accent can be difficult for some. Click on the settings button top right and you can turn closed caption on. 😀
What is the difference between menopause we are like with me I have to take a hormone pill, but then I’m also in the thyroid position. I have to take a thyroid pill. Is that dangerous? Take them both of them together?😅🎉😮🎉😮😢😢🎉😊🎉😂😢❤
What is HRT Barbara and if that will helps the symptoms then why doctor don’t prescribe it to the patients who are struggling? what is the side effects because all medication have side effects than how it helps because it’s a long suffering journey. It
