Nice tip about not wrapping the thumb with straps! Might have mentioned (although it is obvious) that straps require a double overhand grip. I have seen some really unusual attempts to do otherwise :)

I've mixed grip straps all the time. For balancing issues I tend to stick with double over as much as I can, but if I'm racking pulling something heavy, then I'll go to a mixed. So no, I wouldn't say that double over is "required" for straps. To the video, the figure 8's are even better for not wrapping the thumb around to decrease your rom even more. To can have the bar hanging on by the tips of your fingers even more. I've only used them a few times. One point of concern is that when your fingers let go of the bar while using the figure 8's, you are still strapped in so stay tight or you'll fall over.

I use mixed grip with straps, no problems.

@@phasm42why use straps then? Plus mixed group develops muscle imbalances.

I really don’t think we need straps in competition sorry but for me it’s not the full lift in competition I personally only use them on back off and higher rep sets once my grip is fatigued I want to know it’s all me picking that weight up each to there own I’d be gutted if I seen straps being used in a meet

The rules for WSM and I think the giants deadlift require you to have the thumbs covering the bar. WSM 20 or 21 had it mentioned in the behind the scenes video. Same in static monsters

The most important tip that I've ever heard about straps straps is this: if you're going to use straps, make sure they match your purse.

I have spud inc straps, they are bombproof but so solid that they are impractical. The material is so thick that after training the sweat dries on them and they set so stiff they will cut you up. Soft but strong straps are the way to go. They don’t need to be that thick. The good thing about the spud straps is that they genuinely are unbreakable, to break them in I spent 10 minutes beating the fuck out of them with a rubber mallet, and 8 years into deadlifting (and rack pulls all the time at the beginning) they have very minimal wear. They have a 400kg frame deadlift, 150 farmers, 565kg 2 inch rack pull, and 200kg+ deadlifts almost every week for years under their hood.

I prefer figure 8 straps I actually have some custom-made ones that work amazing the only other style strap I really use is a versa grip kind of strap but anything really heavy or any reps over a nickel I use my figure eights for when I don’t wanna have to worry about grip at all And personally I think powerlifting as far as the Deadlift goes every Federation is beyond stupid they’re costing athletes pounds on the platform and I know there are people out there that say you have to train and strengthen every muscle group which is 100% entirely true but I’m sorry unless you’re Superman or the hulk your grip is never going to be as strong as your back quads hamstrings etc. So why force athletes to not perform their best for example it’s OK for them to wear wrist wraps knee wraps squat suit deadlift suit bench shirt And everybody is OK with that but it’s ridiculous how many people hate on a person deadlifting with straps that is all have a nice day☺️

Agreed. It’s a double standard. Your grip has to be strong but by all means, use a belt, wraps, bench shirt, squat suit, deadlift suit.. it’s retarded.

Tips for getting the strap tight around the bar? The knurling on my bar doesnt allow me to twist it tight, it kind of just locks in place. When I try to wrap around the smooth first and slide it over, same story when it hits the knurl, it doesnt really budge... and any attempt of me kinda forcing it more or less loosens the strap.

@kylebeng

@@DannyBoy426 ha I did switch to versa grips. You can use that or anything similar. The grip is noticeably stronger than conventional straps.

Twist the bar as a whole. Just like you were trying to make everything roll fowards

I first used straps when I started doing higher rep sets, and I felt like my grip was going to limit me, or at least be a distraction towards the end of the set.

I like thumbless grip i do it on the machines rowing etc and i find that my lats work better that way and deadlifting with that grip too i dont know if its a weakness issue or my body just works better like that

I use figure 8 straps if I'm using straps at all because I'm probably trying to rest my grip or my forearms are messed up.

Question. If you have no desire to do a powerlifting meet, does using wraps when you deadlift stimulate less muscle? Thanks
@koyote9283
@koyote9283 2 года назад
Definitely not for your posterior chain which is usually what you are trying to develop deadlifting anyway. Only thing were it could is forearms for that I would recommend don't use them till you need them for example don't use them when you are warming up but use them for your heaviest sets if grip is an issue.
