@@LizWhite. Yeah, there's a name for it, parentification. Heck, it's pretty much expected for older kids to look after their younger siblings, be like a third or fourth parent. That's why some people wanted to have large families. The Duggars even had a whole system called the Buddy System where the younger siblings were passed off to the older siblings once the newborn was weaned. So, basically, a five-year-old kid would be looking after their six-month-old sibling.

I am 15 and I will say that I feel so sad that many girls my age and even younger feel such a rush to grow up because now in this time we don’t really have a space for teens to be teens. Disney channel is dead basically. Tween stores like justice our closed and now we trade the glitter and dolls for makeup and certain clothes at the age of 12….i do wear crop tops as my mom allows it but my mom puts her limits and I am so happy she does.

To be fair between 14 and 16 were legal age in ALL Nations before WWII, women were expected to become mothers early in the prime of their youth, same thing with boys. Sweet 16s, Bat Mitzvah and other comming of age ceremonies were big deals back in the day. We spoil people too much these day and are arogant to how humanity lived for over 10,000 years. Its natual for teens to want to be adults, beause they were such for most of human history. Today 26 us barely considered an adult and that's just about the halfway point to the average lifespan. That said given today's norms we could try to do a better job, but it won't be easy. Working in a school of teens all day isn't easy. The best way though is to be real with them and hope you get true to them without having to say I told you so, but that too is part of growing up. On the other hand parents who encourage such things should be repimended more.

God, it is them that needs to be educated to respect people and not just see them as sexual objects. Sorry. I guess I needed to rant. I do agree with you. I just hate that women and children have to worry about this at a young age. Any age, but especially at a young one.

I feel like one of the main reasons why Bethanny gets overlooked is honestly how awkwardly framed the episode was. Yes, don't grow up too fast, they were still 14 and they should be acting/dressing like they are 14; but there is a certain element of blaming the girls for being pushed into that situation because of the 'don't grow up too fast' angle. That angle is very tricky to go for without somehow making it the victims fault. It's likely because of it that people saw it was the girls fault they were pushed into that situation; like the whole "oh if you didn't go on that stage with these revealing clothes, bethanny wouldn't have creeped on you, this is your fault why this happened." Girls are little girls. They are not aware what they're doing/wearing is sexual and just think its cool the older girls are doing it. I feel like people, espeically like Bethanny, forget that they are just children. She should've known better.
@Neku628
@Neku628 3 месяца назад
The men, boys and Bethany should have been held responsible. The girls can dress how they want, it's just I wish the guys and Bethany got their comeuppance for being weirdos to the girls. Guys are able to control themselves, I wish that was something a lot of shows like the Proud Family would put emphasis on, instead of it just being, "Oh, you shouldn't dress like a wh@re if you don't want to be objectified." I wish the girls got praise from their parents for standing up to the creepy teenage boys, instead of just being grounded. I'm glad Penny, Dijonay and Lacienega were there to bail Zoey out of making a terrible mistake. I can see why Zoey would want to have sex, since she's always mistreated by everyone, including her own so-called friends. "Hey, someone's noticing me! I must not be a complete loser that nobody would waste two cents on."

"Girls are little girls" = That statement makes no sense. "They are not aware what they're doing/wearing is sexual and just think its cool if the older girls are doing it" If a child or group of children lacks awareness on how inappropriate or dangerous something is, then it's better to educate them rather than excuse or dismiss them. "I feel like people, especially Bethany, forget that they are just children. She should've known better." Exactly right. Bethany should have known better. And when Penny knew about why her parents did not approve of the outfits, she decided to disobey them anyway when their backs were turned. Penny, LaCienega, and Dijonay only stopped wearing those outfits when the boys' behaviors openly made them uncomfortable.

I know the guys at the party aren't really set up to be sympathetic, but I can't imagine being one of the dudes at a party. Imagine being probably a relatively decent but horny teenage dude, chatting up a girl you think is close to your age but yo friend who brought them knows they're wayyy too young for you but told them to lie about their age. Bethany settin' up every dude at that party to catch a fucking case bro And on the growing up too fast - I think a lot of it is enabled by the parents. They want their kids to be able to self express, be happy, etc. but don't check them because sometimes kids do think they're more grown than they actually are. And like - I get and agree with the idea that clothes and makeup shouldn't be inherently sexual, but some clothes, makeup, piercings, etc. really do make you look older and that is kinda dangerous on both ends even if you don't factor in predators or people that intentionally seek out minors. Like my folks weren''t *incredibly* strict with what I was allowed to wear and do, but certain things was just not happening. If I wanted something they thought was inappropriate for my age, they straight up told me it wasn't happening and to wait till I get grown with my own money. Like at the party - imagine chatting to someone trying to catch their vibe and thinking that they're close to your age but in actuality they're way too young for you but you wouldn't be able to tell because there are no tween stores for girls between the ages of 13 - 16. They go from dressing and acting like they're 12 to dressing, looking and acting like they're 20 because there are no stores and spaces that cater to them specifically and all of these brands that historically (for lack of better words) have been for grown women are trying to get money from tweens and teens while not making any lines or things that are specifically meant to be appropriate for them. Like take something like Drunk Elephant for example. The brand has largely been marketed and targetted towards older and adult women due to the anti aging properties but now kids are obsessed with it. And while yeah *some* products may be fine for kids to use because they don't have a lot of active ingredients, Drunk Elephant doesn't have a line of product *specifically meant* for children and a lot of their products are not cheap either. And it's the same with so much else.

something I never see talked about is *why the parents enable or encourage the adultification of their teens* - because it benefits them, the parent. the quicker their kid is no longer a kid, the sooner they can cook and clean up after themselves, get a job, start their own life and move out. the more independent the kid is, the less the parent has to be a parent.

I'm just curious how Dijonay was able to stand up for herself and tell the dudes to "BACK OFF!" while Zoey had to be pretty much dragged out by her friends, so that she wouldn't make a terrible mistake that her parents would have pretty much got onto her about. I had that happen in my own life, I see myself in a lot of Dijonay and Zoey. The overweight loser that every male is "too good for" and the kid that was expected to be a free babysitter because the parents are always absent for some reason. Bethany is also different from me because what happened to me when I was eleven, the guy was a teen; he wasn't interested in my little sister, just me. So, he told her to wish on some magic rocks. He had me to himself and when I got home, my mom pretty much tore my eleven-year-old hiney up because I "put my sister at risk" and "I put myself at risk when I was supposed to be looking after my little sister." There's a lot of mental development between a neurotypical seventeen-year-old and an autistic eleven-year-old, who pretty much never got the sex talk.

As an older cousin to many young children, I could not imagine being this horrible to them, no matter what the situation was. That being said, I don't think younger girls (or younger people of any gender :) ) wearing makeup is always a problem. It entirely depends on how they and their guardians view it. I've liked makeup since I was very young, but I didn't have the idea that it was necessary for people to like me or for me to grow up, it was just a fun hobby, and my mom introduced me to it gradually because it's a fun hobby for her too. I'd say that healthy views about 'beauty' products and education about how they work is important for the young people who enjoy using them, and it should not always be associated with this toxic misconception of growing up and popularity

I remember watching this episode and was happy that Penny and her friends left. But was upset Zoey was dragged off because she was enjoying the guys attention. I didn't realize how dire the situation was. It's incredible the writers made this into an episode.

As someone who grew up within a toxic family, this resonates with me. There are so many shows and movies that make the argument that "family is everything", but that certainly doesn't jive for people who had to grow up within family's who only ever spread rumors, and lies about one another, instead of doing the things that might seem obvious to others, like being kind to your own family. Well, here's a dose of reality for people who may not know this, some family's are better off abandoning. Not all of them, but some of them. It all depends on if the family genuinely cares for you, or if they only care that your a certain way, and believe certain things, and behave a specific way, and... I think you get the point. Blood isn't thicker than water. Toxic people are toxic people, and you should avoid them no matter what, because they only ever want to drag you down with them. I was trapped with a family member who mentally and emotionally abused me (physically to if you consider being force fed pills physical abuse), and kept me under constant surveillance while I was in college. I was pressured and ridiculed as a measure to make sure I couldn't call for help, and was expected to act a specific way, think a certain way, and believe in certain things, and if I did so much as breathe the incorrect air, I would be met with verbal lashings akin to if a psychotic child skinned the neighbors pet dog. Like, I don't think I deserved any of that, but she would constantly remind me that I was the one that had a problem, and that she had to "fix me" because I was so "broken". Tell me that family matters, when THAT is my family. I'm not the only one who's been through this, but at the time, I certainly felt alone, and trapped, and afraid for my own life. I only managed to escape because when covid hit, the college kicked us out of our dorms, and my family in that state refused to let me stay with them because they were too afraid that I'd infect them. I had to move upstate for a time, so I stayed with my sister (one of the few sane members of my family), and when she realized what was going on, she did everything in her power to protect me from going back to that place. I had to abandon finishing college, but I wouldn't be hurt anymore, and that seemed the better trade off. To this day, I KNOW it was the right decision to stay, and flee my abuser when I had the chance. I got lucky, and I think about that a lot. If you are being hurt by family, just remember this. You have no obligation to love your biological family. You have the power to choose your family. You have that freedom. If you resent your family for hurting you, you are absolutely valid to think that, and don't let them trick you into thinking that it was YOUR fault that THEY hurt you. Some family's see a perfectly good person, and choose be horrible to them. I don't know why, but that doesn't really matter. We can't control how other people behave and act, but you can choose for yourself if you want to engage with it or not. Don't be afraid to be yourself, and surround yourself with people who love you for being who you are. Even if you feel alone right now, there are people out here who care about you, and want to see you get through the tough times. We're rooting for you, and remember that brighter days are ahead.

This is definitely an episode where they’re trying to expose the child star industry. Like Nickelodeon is in the spotlight but a bunch of those same managers also managed Disney stars. They have the point where the stars start getting older and need more roles, so their manager changes their image by getting them hooked on drugs and sex. They say “you have to do this or you won’t get work” but it’s the same manager threatening them that’s the reason they don’t get work.

You shouldn’t have to dress that way so young to feel pretty, focusing so much on your self-image at 12 shouldn’t be that normalized. It was your parents job to encourage that you’re beautiful without exposing yourself or wearing a genre of clothing, instead of letting you believe clothing enhances the beauty you will always have

My own cousin tried to groom me as a much younger child (6-7 years old). I was lucky that I had been taught about (and understood) grooming and how it wasn't okay. The thing is, you never see it until certain things happen. In my case, it was my older, male cousin. I told my parents and they talked to me about it, told me to always have the door open when we were visiting other kids. This had nothing to do with being strict, it was all to do with making sure my parents could see and hear what we were doing or talking about to avoid such a thing happening. We never visited my cousin again and I avoid talking to him whenever we do see him.

When I am writing this, please keep in mind, I am not justifying Bethany’s actions, I am pointing out observations of how grooming is portrayed in the media. I noticed that when women groom, it comes into 2 main forms. A) some women have been groomed (mainly, by men) and are stuck in this cycle and have to be the ones that find the girls, sometimes boys to lure in and appease their groomer. B) they are the psychopaths, like Epstein’s wife who don’t care who they are hurting. These are the women who don’t care about other women. Also, there is the social attitude that is ingrained whether we experience it or not. Women, no matter how old they are are taught to appease men. We are supposed to fit to their beauty standards. Our attitudes have to succumb to what they want. We are always intertwined in these double standards. Sometimes it is so ingrained, we barely see we are participating in them. I wonder if Bethany does this because that is all she knows. Again, not justifying it, but either she was groomed herself or this is what she observed. Or she is just a psychopath groomer like Epstein’s wife and does not care who she hurts.

It SCARES me how you can flat out observe a double standard in child grooming with female individuals, and people will go "I don't see it". The groomer could be as gorgeous as a runway model. The groomer could ACT as nice as Oprah on the outside but be as selfish Oprah on in the inside. The groomer can even gaslight or redirect your attention towards a distraction (I'm not grooming; YOU'RE grooming by accusing me of grooming/you accusing me of grooming means you're a groomer too). But the worst, is how people think groomers CAN'T BE OLDER TEENS THEMSELVES. If a teen at the age of 15-16 is manipulating children within the range of 9-14, that can STILL be a grooming dynamic when older (I was 9 when you were 16 vs I was 14 when you were 15).

Groomers, and just all around bad influences. I have a friend who ended up moving to the town over and making a lot of more in-town friends, where I went to a more rural school. Makayla would hang out with these dudes who wanted to mess around, get high, talked like they were these thug adults be in mind she and I are both incredibly white, and I never met these guys. She would always say "yeah I'll introduce you," but it never happened. Later down the line when we're adults she's got all these stories of these bad relationships, she's moved from dude to dude so much but now she's got health issues she never addressed and she's in another state where most of the people who love her can't actually help her. She put her faith in people who did not have her interest in mind, and spent so mind time fishing for attention with drama, and crying wolf that even I struggled to know how to help her. It's real easy for someone to think they're just doing their own thing and not realize the consequences that'll come if those friends, relatives, or relationships aren't good ones.

The freaking revealing clothes are another child groomer trick. The clothes are inherently sexual. Putting revealing clothes like that on a child/young teen is wrong, and it doesn’t make you a bad person to be uncomfortable with kids being dressed inappropriately They want to say “you’re a misogynist for telling women what to wear” or “you’re weird for being attracted to it” (not attracted to it, first on the list of them trying to project their own grossness on others) because you notice these clothes are not appropriate. The clothes aren’t appropriate on adult women, and aren’t worn frequently by women who aren’t hookers or strippers. That is how hookers and strippers dress and it is inherent to the clothing, not to the person (child) wearing them. These parents aren’t protecting their daughters’ chastity - I’d argue it’s the parents grooming their own kids by letting them dress that way. Kids should dress like kids. Community relationships are important, so parents can get together and be like “what you are doing isn’t right by your children and you have to fix it so our kids don’t see it and want to dress like prostitutes” This is not empowering. This is traumatizing. Girls aren’t the only ones. Girls get told to say no all the time but boys need to be told not to ask for sex unless they are ready to risk making a baby. That goes for gays too. It’s just not fair to them, to deny them the chance of a fulfilling relationship (the kind that comes from making a real connection through spending time and being friends with someone) and it’s unfair to let them be traumatized by having sex too early just because they’re gay.
