The Destruction of Suga Mama 💔💔💔 (Hopeless Romantic) 

I know some of you may have loved Suga Mama's orginal design but this is just observational commentary based on the way the writers had other characters treat Suga Mama based on her appearance at the time

Papi had no business throwing shade at Sugar Mama. Man dresses like 1990s Joker and laughs like him too 😂

Even if Suga Mama was pretty for the whole show, Oscar could still butt heads with her because of her bad attitude. Papi's jokes wouldn't work, but honestly they didn't need to be there to begin with

Sugar mama is a show of ageism. How she became is a natural order for a lot of women and is how a lot of shows go about it. Severe weight gain for a "grandma" sagging skin, and the osteoporosis that results in height loss that occurs in both men and women with age. I've always seen the transformed mama less as a "pretty" and more as a "youre too old to be pretty". That isnt an old lady sugar mama. That is a 20-something with old hair. Even the show just couldnt see an older woman, as they have depicted -as every cartoon depicts them - in getting married. Nope, make her thin and pretty! And papi always reminded me of a chupacabra. He wasnt pretty either. He was another ageist (racist ) depiction in media.

I agree her design was a choice to say the least. I always found it sad that they focused so much on calling her ugly basically because she was old when everyone gets old someday. Plus, Papi constantly making fun of her because she can't understand him got tired real fast even when I was a kid! Like who are you to talk you green haired troll!? Papi is just as "ugly" if not more so but he thinks he has a right to comment on Sugar Mama's looks!? Look in a mirror dude!!! Proud Family is good at fatphobia by telling its audience that fat is ugly and undesirable! (Sure they have plenty of body types but they treat the bigger ones like the butt of the joke more often...) How many of these "transformations" happened with a "fat" character losing weight gaining height and becoming suddenly "beautiful" to everyone in the show!? I can think of two off the top of my head with Sugar Mama's and that time with the Gross sister! The Gross sister might not have changed as dramatically as Sugar Mama but both instances paint a clear picture of what the creators believe the standard of beauty is... Tall and Thinner...

To me, it seemed like they were saying “yeah Sugar is older and an easy target to make fun of, but if she really wanted to, Sugar could change and make everyone’s jaws drop. Poppy better count his stars that she doesn’t understand Spanish and his insults, cause if she did she could improve herself and not be into him. Clearance on the other hand always treated her kindly and enjoyed her company, so he got her hot version. Clearance saw her for her inner beauty and not as some ugly, overweight and old woman like how Poppy did. He saw and treated her like she was a beautiful person, which is the way you should treat people.

My grandma used always claimed she used to be taller and somehow got shorter as she got older.

I don't care what nobody says, Suga Mama's cute just the way she is. I use to be overweight before I lost a whole lot of weight, so I can understand this. It's insane that they actually did that thing where she gets skinnier and it all of a sudden makes her eyes pop out, makes her mouth look better and makes her taller. That's never made any sense to me. Then she eats one piece of cake and instantly blows back up? Nah, that's a bit dramatic. This was a great video analysis

I remember how she always played favorites and how she treated Oscar and a lot of my sympathy goes out the window 🤷‍♂️

I wonder if her design was based on the stereotypical mammy... like I know she behaves the opposite of a servant (she's lazy and sits and watches TV all day)... Or maybe its a stereotype of older people, like how the older we get, the less exercise we do, which can cause us to put on weight and have more pronounced arched backs... But then, why did they still have her be a tough grandma if she supposedly has limited mobility based on those old people stereotypes.... You got me thinking now about suga mama's design LOL 😭😭 ♡

Maybe I’m reaching, but in the episode with Penny’s teacher, both of them were interested in Percy. In the reboot, it shows that Suga Mama was abused. Maybe after Suga Mama got with Percy, he was emotionally abusive to her, and she just accepted it, instead of standing up for herself. Her dynamic with Oscar, is like what she wished she had reacted to Percy, with insults and jabs. And she resents Oscar because he looks/ acts like Percy, and she favors Bobby, because Bobby is the opposite of Percy and Oscar

I remember that episode where she changed and almost got married! Back then, I felt so offended by what they did to SM, making her look that way.. and characters acting how they did.. It became my least favorite episode, that idea being the priority of the story & all... Also, a man mysteriously dating/marrying many people then leaving suddenly, then it's one day revealed the reason for everything was beause of his Alzheimer's is a complex prompt! It sounds pretty interesting, and sad :(

At first I thought you were reaching. Then you mention how she looked when she was young and that the way she looked at the wedding would make more sense since it looks like an older version of her. Then I realized they made suga momma unattractive on purpose

I’m not a fan of how they’re deviating from her original character. She would have kicked everyone out for messing with one of her grand kids. On a different note papi reminds me of my grandfather who passed away last year. They have that same laugh and sense of humor. If he roasted you, you would roast back and tell him you love him with a hug. It makes me happy that he’s still on the show makes me happy.

I'd like to thank you for making this channel. It nice finding a community that likes to overthink about and find meaning in cartoons we all loves as kids

Papi looks like the Joker to me for some reason.

I think her short and plump final design was used as a way to add extra comedic effect to her character, especially when she is getting into it with Oscar lol. I think it's like a bit of a juxtaposition of how you'd think a granny like her would act. She looks like she would be sweet and frail (I think her name, _Suga(r)_ Mama, even implies this indirectly!), but she is very sassy and funny lol. I personally never found her design/her in general to be ugly but seeing her transformation as a kid in that one episode was pretty surprising! Since the Proud Family is a Black show, I think it is also very possible that the Black creatives behind the show could have based Suga Mama off of _their_ grandmas, or mothers. She could be an amalgamation of their grandmas/mothers, and perhaps many of their grandmas/mothers physically looked (and acted) like Suga Mama too!

It's the show's way of reinforcing the idea that women are only worthy of respect/love/attention if they are attractive. Part of it is ageism part of it is sexism. IDK if it's intentional commentary on the way society treats women especially WOC and older generations or if it is just the misogyny of our culture influencing the animators/writers.

Lol, I'm happy that some people also thought "why didn't they make her look that way to begin with then?" or, them not making fun of specifically her so much just because she's older!

For me I look at the transformation simply as ,the best version of yourself gets the best out of life. I could argue thst most matriarchs regardless of race or ethnicity look like the common “suga mama” image . Most time due to putting so many lives before their own . The weight of regret is what” uglied” (aged) her. Inside then outwardly.

I thought Suga Mama always looked fine for her age, though suddenly making herself younger and more attractive for the wedding was more for her self esteem than a joke.

I think we all know why the two/three designs were picked. Animation is a visual media that always convey old people as short and very square design, exagerating all the features. Sugar Mama was meant to be harsh and have jokes at her expense, those dynamics are not usually acompanied by attractive designs, just like older characters don't have appealing designs so the audience reads them as old. For the younger self of Sugar Mama the pick of her looks is very clear, is so you see how she looks like an adult Penny would look like, after all they are related. Penny is slim, Oscar is tall, make sense to make younger Sugar Mama both those things. Also her transformed self didn't read as an old woman at all, the hair was white but her face was 20/30 with no sign of any aging, they just reused the design with white hair. In animation, even more for younger audiences, you will hardly see a beautiful old person, the industry is that ageist, and Sugar Mama's treatment is the same, unfortunately.

It's to return to the status quo. Nothing more. Nothing less. Besides, we've seen her when she was younger and yes she was a looker.

Thanks for being up this episode I totally forgot about this. I see that this can be used more in modern day idk if I’m taking this wrong but it reminds me a lot of the red pill community and these “alpha” and “manly” individuals on podcast and talking about how younger women are “more” conventionally and physically attractive than older women and how older women aren’t “useful” in a man’s desires and shouldn’t get love in a sense. This is the way I see how this episode can be taken in effect of those values but I’m honestly sad that they didn’t keep that man as her husband she was clearly happy I that episode it’s honestly disgusting how papi makes fun of her just bc she is aged. I also feel like it conveys to women and men online who try and look youthful and try and prevent wrinkles and aging like it’s the devil or a sin. Aging is a wonderful thing and an important process in life sure it can suck but it also can come with great Benefits and it’s honestly now a days its like aging is a privilege since all of the drama and dugsting controversies people get into now a days especially early gen z and late melenials on social media.

Honestly, with regards to "how did she get short" most people lose height in old age due to the effects of gravity on the spine and arthritis. The discs start to compress, and vertebrae can degenerate as well. Faces also tend to "droop" in old age as well due to loss of collagen and elastin. With regards to women specifically, menopause is a helluva thing. That being said, that still doesn't account for why she's a gray-haired carbon copy of her younger self, because that's not how aging works either.

I think it's a thing of abuse. When you feel worthy of love, you take care of yourself. The constant abuse makes her stressed and the body tenses up. She eats like a horse. Stress does a lot

Some people shrink and get more hunched as they start to age past their young adult years. Doesn't make sense how she suddenly got taller though. Actually that cake joke is a very cruel joke in my opinion and really increases a girl's fear of getting fat from an occasional treat.

The getting shorter and face elongating is just normal effects of aging.

To me, Papi and Trudy are the same. Hear me out. They both make fun of their love interests, it's just Papi is reviled more because he is an old unattractive man making fun of someone he feels is unattractive. But he keeps hanging out with her. Same with Trudy making fun of Oscar being a bum who can't pay bills and his lack of intelligence. Why did she marry him and stay married to him if he was that bad? They made Oscar and Suga Mama unattractive and kind of dumb but it makes Trudy and Papi look worse because they are clowning people that they continue to hang out with because they can't get/keep any better options.

Again, not a bad point, but literally the only difference between her made over design and her ‘30s design is the hair being white. If she wore it down instead of in the puffy side buns, I’d think it was the Proud Family’s interpretation of Storm of the X-Men. I don’t know if I could take her seriously as the mother of middle aged Oscar, let alone anyone’s grandmother is this was always her consistent design. At the very least, bare minimum, she should have a jaw line like Granny from Looney Tunes. Maybe also a fold line at the corner of the lips. Not a big one like in the design they went with, just small. Subtle.

I mean, if she was the hot version still being horrible to Oscar, I’m wondering how that would be if she was attractive too. I feel you don't see it from more sides. I like watching your videos but you don't get too in depth with things. You just state stuff and mention how it is kinda messed up. I loved Poppie as a kid. He was the grandfather that would also be toxic to people but do it in the most hilarious ways. Latinos are a lot like that. We make fun of each other ans sometimes even take it to far but there is still love there. Maybe because we harbor sometype of resentments from our past that we do such things. But that's how I also saw Oscar do to Sugar Mama. Oscar seems like a type of person that his whole life was one gut punch to another. Like how George Lopez played in his show and how his relationship was with his mother. Sugar Mama reminds me of Benny and how they mistreat their sons and speak I'll of them ever chance they get. Making the child be bitter as an adult not really wanting their parents to be happy because they took a lot of their happiness away. But if you notice when Sugar Mama transformed into a pretty lady her personality also changed a bit. She was a lot happier and less bitter. Which can be said about a lot of people when something big like love changes them. I believe the George Lopez show had the same things happen when Benny found her love. Even George was like are you sick or are am I dying. Those jokes are toxic in real life but are played for laughs for the most part. Even in real life. It is when you start thinking too much into what people say is when you become bitter and resentful. Sometimes it is better to just let people insult you and move on. It isn't right but you can becomes stronger and a bigger person than them if you do.

I think sugar mama she is an example of struggle love because I think sugar Mama her as a black woman she she's been through so much with Oscars father so I think this is why she hates Oscar so much so this is the real reason she does not show Oscar love and this is why sugar Mama treats Oscar so bad unfortunately because I think Oscar's father he was a deadbeat father so I think this is why Oscar have some issues with his mother because he has father issues Oscar so this is why he doesn't know how raise his kids well and he doesn't know how to man up 13:47
