I watched this live. I cried then. I still cry every time I listen to it. Her song, her emotions and her love for this country showed why this song can still bring tears. It started us in being able to mend our broken hearts and to have pride again in our country. We’d forgotten for a minute what we can do when we pull together. Her song helped us see there was still love in the world if we just stop and pay attention. You never know these days we may need her again to remind us again. We are the wind beneath our wings. Thanks Bette.
I tuned into the television just in time to catch Bette Midler sing this live. In my city, Austin, TX, the whole town was crying on 9/11. Whether I was putting in gas at the station or grocery shopping, everyone was red-eyed w/ flushed faces. When I heard her sing I felt she was giving me a strong, warm & I felt my soul start to mend. I will love her forever, she connected w/ all of us. It was a big love fest as tears poured out. Thank you, Bette Midler, Thank God for YOU.
Bette Midler became a hero that day. That's why till this day, people love her. She went to this game, even after threats were made to sing. And while singing, she said God bless you. That cemented her place in America as a true hero.
Mellymel0114 Thanks for the correction. Totally forgot it was a game. My memories of that time are so messed up. I live in Houston, and lived through tropical storm Allison that year in June and the aftermath of it. Then came 9/11, it was surreal back to back living it.
I’m an Australian. I’ve been to New York, went to the top of the Twin Towers. When 9/11 happened I sat up all night, watching live coverage, sobbing my heart out😢
i have to give it to Bette Midler i dont know how she can perform this song and keep her own emotions in check while everybody else is openly crying and breaking down in tears. This is one of her best songs and very fitting for this 9/11 memorial.
As soon as this woman opens her mouth just to say "oooohhhhh"... I get chills and goosebumps ALL OVER! She's unique, really lives to her title of Divine.
Yes. She has said, “i might have been born at Hawaii, but I’m a New Yorker,” and has quietly done what she can to make the state better, planting trees and cleaning up.
OMG, I cried like a baby when I saw her singing this great song on TV that day!!!!! So did my parents. If you saw this clip the day she sang it and didn't cry, there's something WRONG WITH YOU OR YOU ARE AMERICA's ENEMY!!!!!!!!!! And here it is, almost 10 years later; I'm watching this clip and still crying!!!!!!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA< AND GOD BLESS US< EVERY ONE!!!!!!!!
i send this song to my beloved Mum, who left this world to soon, RIP MUM, Feb. 3, 1951-Jan. 4, 2009, LOVE you Mum, and miss you so much, but you are always with me in my heart.
No words can adequately comfort unexpected dread. Grief shock anguish. The God created Bette Midler to make us laugh. Cry. To ease the pain. Live life to the fullest as short as it is. What a courageous performance at a horrific moment in mankind's history!
Oh wow!!! I always cry when I watch this video. Thank you Bette Midler for singing this and helping so many to cope with the lost of their love ones. God bless you Sweetie.
She was crying when she left. She contained herself until the last note. Other performers were supposed to be there, but they backed out because they were too scared of another terrorist attack. Bette came here when others would not. She was brave.Barbara S. was asked, as were others. They declined, out of fear.
Artsts who see their talent as a vocation are no different to health proffesionals and teachers etc who devote their lives to doing the right thing. God bless Ms Midler who went the extra mile x
Where is our patriotism now? I love Bette Midler...she brings out nothing but raw emotion in everyone..including our elected officials that are seated by her. We are all human beings regardless of our background.
My thoughts and prayers STILL go out to all the loved ones and everyone lost during 9/11. My mother was on a flight and luckily her plane landed safely. God Bless the USA and the rest of the world for that matter.
Bette Midler's finest moment in her career. The power of the raw emotion she conveyed with just her voice and a piano. Stunningly powerful and so fitting for that day. She made it memorable, a song I never took that seriously, but Bette is a genius in front of a crowd and she knows, instinctively, what to do. I remember how we all felt hat day. I love Bette Midler even more today.
Who will ever forget what you were doing that day? It was crushing to the hearts of all Americans. The loss of the people, no matter what nationality , race, or religon was devasting. The thanks to the firemen and police men who lost their own life that day saving others and the thanks to the others who did their job and lived was spoken through Bette. Thank you
I so agree. It was the most emotional performance I have ever seen by any performer. For her to be able to get through it without breaking down was truly inspiring.
I love Bette Midler. She has no idea how much she inspires with her sense of compassion and connection to everyone around her. She truly brings out the best in people and does her best to pump us up with a sense of real joy.
We are the greatest country in the world and we will never ever forget 911. We can set aside our differences in times of tragedy and band together. I love my country and I am so proud to see how patriotic and how each and every one of us will do what it takes to defend our nation. May we never forget why the pilgrims came here. May we never forget why millions have kept coming to the USA. FREEDOM!!!!! We will never let it be taken away
one of our countries bittersweet moments. in a time of national tragedy, this inspirational song brought together a grieving nation while paying due respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Thank God for Bette Midler. Simply divine. Only she could capture the grief that each of us carries for those who loss their so horrifically, senile slyly and tragically on 9/11. Only light can subdue darkness. Only love can overcome hatred. Only forgiveness heals a broken heart. God truly bless this land,

This song means a lot for me. There is a friend who I love who I shared the movie backed up for this song with. So, lots of memories. I admire very much the privileged voice you Bette Medler. Thanks for make others life more pleasent trough your songs.
Haven't heard this for a long long time, and stumbled across this video, within minutes I was blubbing, all those people in the audience who'd lost loved ones, it brought back horrible memories of that terrible day, so long ago now but never forgotten! I was on holiday at the time it happened in Lanzarote and my son phoned me and told me to put the tv on, I couldn't beleive what I was witnessing, a truly awful time for New York and all of the USA, rip all those who preished.
All these years after, I still can't watch this without tearing up. What a beautiful tribute to the men and women who tragically died on that terrible day. As a Canadian, I want to tell citizens of the U.S.A. that we stood with you on that day and we continue to as you battle terrorism. God bless.
Takes a great performer to bring down a huge audience with just a few piano chords. You just heard a great entertainer at her best. Perez sent me here, thanks Perez
I am dedicating this record to my Cousin's wife LISA who was rushed to the hospital recently with a life threatening illness............. She is my Hero!!!! Very determined Lady!!!! I am so glad I was able to tell her recently that she is my HERO!!!!!!
