ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
We've lived in our house for about 12 years now and we've never fully utilized our living room because of a really awkward shape and niche that was created by a room addition some former home owners had done. We're finally doing something about it and remodeling our entire living room, but this video is going to focus specifically on custom built-in cabinets and shelving to handle the awkward space, which will hopefully make it look and function more nicely.

As a professional cabinet installer, I have to say, I love this shelf design. So many prefab shelves have no thought put into how theyre gonna stay up on the wall. Im talking 40 pound corbels that are supposed to hang off drywall. The boxes are a brilliant solution to that. Also, your walls are really nice, much closer to square than most of the ones we work on. The solutions you were talking about are stuff we have to do on every job

For the concave wall, the trick I've seen people use is to trace it with a washer and a pencil. You put the tip of the pencil inside the washer, use pressure to hold both against the wall, then roll the washer along the wall.

Thanks for confirming what I thought was my own, unique way of of generating cut sheets and processing full sheets. Because of my work and experience, I use 3ds max in a very similar way that you use SketchUp, along with my track saw (rough cut) , MFT (cross cutting) and table saw (ripping). Great minds think alike!

the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. ru-vid.comUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

Hey Chris, superb work as always. I like how you always put so much thought into your projects and give your reasons for doing them. I'd like to offer a small critique and a solution that was actually inspired by you. The ugly blocking for the shelves is often a necessary evil as it is in this case. At 15:26 of your video you highlighted a spacer that was used to mount the blocking for the shelf. My thought is to let the spacer be permanent. It would take the place of the blocking and add some color to a drab corner. By using another spacer on the short wall as well you could color them to mirror the color of the boxes. Anyway just a thought, keep up the good work.

I’m in the planning stage of my second van build, and for cabinet and countertop material I keep coming back to Baltic Birch. In your project I really like the cut-outs for the door pulls, and the simplicity of the pulls themselves. That design is modern and clean, but best of all there are no protruding door pulls, which in the tight quarters of a van could catch on clothing or even bruise legs. Actually I’d like to have mostly drawers rather than doors, but I still think I can use that cut-out design for drawer pulls. I also like your use of color on the inside of those upper boxes and the door pulls. I’ve been thinking of painting the exterior sides of the drawer boxes so that when you open a drawer you see the color, but when it’s closed you see the unpainted birch ply. I have been thinking of using one or two colors, but after seeing your video I’m considering a 4-color motif :) I’ll probably be in the design phase for another six months, still tons of decisions to make, but I’m feeling pretty solid about the cabinetry :)

As an ex cable tech, I'd be careful about how tight of a turn you have your coax take when you take it along the baseboard. If it's too tight, you'll push the center conductor a lot closer to the shielding on the outside, and it can cause impedance mismatch and weird reflection noise issues. TBH if you're coming up through the floor already, I'd recommend just going back under the crawl and coming up inside of the cabinet anyway. You're call though! Just thought I'd mention it. Keep doing the awesome stuff.

Great build and quite innovative. I just upgraded to the same pocket hole jig. I’m building a set of cabinets that go underneath a mobile work table and it’s all constructed with pocket holes.
