I also recently purchased the 5205G, and appreciate its inherent beauty and elegance. I ordered a Calatrava folding clasp to replace the original tang buckle. I also ordered a black Patek alligator strap, but with navy blue stitching, similar to the 5271.. let’s see how it looks…
I commend you on your dedication to your watch collecting. The quality of your videos has shown a steady progress. The Pateks are not for me but I appreciate them for their history and craftsmanship. I doubt I will ever add one to my collection for as bad as the Rolex AD games are played the Patek ADs are on a different level. They are straight forward in telling you which hoop to jump through to earn the right to try for the next hoop. I will enjoy the Rolex watches as they are offered to me at my AD. The Rolex watches are durable and suit my lifestyle better. Additionally if I decide to reshape my collection getting in and out of Rolex seems easier and less costly. Appreciate your 5205G travails and agree this is a stunning timepiece. The lug to lug length is long at 49mm but if there are no overhang issues I think you have a good fit. Getting used to this timepiece does take time to appreciate its many features and depth of finishing...a loupe is a must. I appreciate the avant garde design of the bezel and cut-out lugs that at first appear conventional until you look closer and see the level of workmanship at play. The annual calendar mechanism is superb and it is satisfying to have a work of art and science on the wrist that is tasteful and doesn't scream for attention...unless you know what you are looking at.
I am liking the fit of the case. It somehow feels like a 39mm instead of a 40mm because of the shapes of the lugs and concave bezel. Most Patek watches are on the larger side (in case diameter), so I think it's just their style. I could have made do with the standard strap size by using the final hole, but I just decided to get the small size strap so I could use a middle hole. How long does it take for the strap to soften up? Mine still feels stiff. I just got a new (3rd party) alligator strap in dark navy. Looks nice. It complements the dial color., and it's actually might be more comfortable. Maybe the leather is thinner, but it feels more flexible. I might post a video on it.
Better than Rolex? lol... They aren't in competition to say the least. Pateks are more so classy, more sophisticated, and complicated overall. Rolex has a much better variety than Patek in my opinion. Rolex also has watches with high or low production, with high or low-price ranges, with high or low exclusiveness, whereas Pateks are pricier on average but have overall less production. It is like comparing apples and oranges in the end of it all. Both brands are at the top of it all. Best of the best.
@@sc1 I have a good amount of both Rolex and Patek time pieces and will say that both are great at what they do. Regardless of Rolex mass producing certain models more than Patek, they each have their own style and enjoy both equally. I have had a much harder time acquiring a rare Rolex model over most Pateks because I started off with Patek and am in great terms with my AD there, so it depends on a lot of things. It is different for everyone.
Ive been owning mine for less than a year and I unfortunately barely wear it. I dont know if that’s because in todays world I have less opportunities to wear a dress watch or whether it simply doesnt click with this one. Im already considering trading it for a charcoal calatrava.
@@sc1 if you can have both it’s fantastic. They would be very complementary. As far as the 5205g it’s really the first time it happens to me that I dont connect with a watch at all. (I saw it in the flesh before buying it and loved it then)
@@sc1 Agreed. Both are amazing and in my opinion they don't compete against each other because they differ entirely as far as their intended use, target audience and character are concerned.
NO comparison with Rolex. Rolex is mass produced in comparison and on nearly every wrist (including many clones) Patek is a cut above - pure class - and is the pinnacle of watch making. Wear one and you will know you are wearing the best money can buy.
