Sally Swing was actually supposed to have her own series as a replacement for Betty Boop, because Betty's popularity was declining in the late 1930s and because Betty is a flapper girl (which wasn't a normal lifestyle for women anymore). Swing jazz was what was popular at this time.
Sally was a good idea but the character hadn't personality. Betty was unique, but in 1938 flappers were largely out of fashion. Anyway, everybody knows BB today, few remember Sally Swing.
I think the reason I like this one so much isn't just because of Sally (although she is pretty cool) but because Betty is...well...acting like an adult for once.
That move at 5:50 was almost an 80 year old twerk. Kinda glad it wasn't. But now I get why the prudes, like the teacher complained, that jazz was too "hot"
+Abjeet Singh First they film real actors and then draw character animation over, that's how most of disney cartoons were made. It's expensive technique by modern standarts.
1:50: Why Donald Duck is in this wonderful cartoon ? 😯😯😊😊 3:05-3:17: She turned Sally Swing into a bar singer in just 2 seconds!! What a way to go!! 😯😯😊😊🤗🤗
Sonic_ The_Hedgehog believe it or not she would have been only 14 or 15 here!! she began her singing career at the age of three under the name "Baby Rose Marie" and even then was able to belt out those adult notes! Certainly a very rare talent.
barkingtree88 I wish I could meet her I have so many questions as to what it was like growing up in the world war 2 era and how the world has changed since when she was born
Wow, you look at all of the amazing dancing and movement then remember that this was all hand drawn. Now think of how much the animators hands must have hurt.
Hiring desperate new grads be like: Interviewer: Can you speak French? No, but I can fit 30 french fries in mouth Interviewer: 🧐... Can you swing? Wanna buy a duck?
Brian Sedlock l remember seeing your name on Annette Funicello's website . I noticed when Betty Boop had shoulder length hair she closely resembles Annette Funicello. I personally think BETTY BOOP and ANNETTE FUNICELLO are two of the cutest and most beautiful brunettes I have ever seen.
@@davidwesley2525 I had a crush on Betty Boop, but believe it or not that crush didn't come until I was in my early teens not a child. But somebody told me that they thought it was cool to have a crush on Betty. She sure is appealing. It's a shame that her cartoons aren't shown on TV today.
I’m 11 years old. I’m an old school kid. Love to read, watch old shows, and listen to people like Marylin. I am so happy someone finally came out with my favorite Betty Boop Episode!
Sometimes I wonder, how it would be to sit on the floor, and watch cartoons such as this one. And just sit there listening and watching the old cartoons..
these early animations always had a lot of back ground scenery that we don't see in modern cartoons. the expanse of animation was going up and companies began trying to cut costs by reducing superfluous motion that you would see in the flowers wiggling, trees dancing, table lamps swaying with the music of early cartoons. in this cartoon if you remove sallyand substitute Betty Hutton, you would have an accurate reproduction of movies at the time. thank you hulakan!
Watching cartoons like this gives me a glimpse of what life was like in the years they were created! I wonder if Betty Bop could stand a chance against the cartoons of today!
My brother’s comment on Betty Boop three years ago, age 8: Betty’s cute. I like her. I think the kids would like her, based on my extremely thorough survey.
One of those then-novel jitterbug dance moves, called "pecking". From her saddleshoes and bobby socks to top of her collegiate-beanie-clad head, our Sally Swing is a real "hepcat" of the swing generation. There's a period film clip of jitterbug dance moves here on RU-vid, shows "pecking" amongst other dance moves.
+fanny3211 I know, it was thanks to them that Bimbo was 'fired' from the cartoons. Yeah it led to Grampy being added, but I would've been happier if they kept Bimbo while adding Grampy. Especially since it'd be extra-awesome if Grampy and Bimbo starred in a Betty Boop cartoon together.
Well keep in mind Betty was 'retired' only shortly before Fleischer Studios was closed and turned into Famous Studios anyway, leading to a very different style (see their more Disney-like Popeye shorts). Even if Betty stayed on, she might have been rather different to how she was originally.
syz·y·gy I meant Betty Boop because she sounds like June Holliday who Harley Quinn was based on when she was voiced by Arleen Sorkin in Batman TAS, and stop hating on girls and making false assumptions about them, girls like you are the reason why sexism persists
Rose Marie was pretty much popular in her day. But I never knew she did cartoons. Although I'm not surprised. Seems a lot of that was going on back then. Popular, semi-popular actors and actress were doing voice overs back then. Much like today.
I'm so glad I'm able to see this wonderful works (thanks for sharing!), I've never seen any Max Fleisher's complete cartoons until I randomly came across with a Betty Boop short some months ago, I... I'm amazed by the animation, technique and creativity Fleisher's studios could create, I'm gonna check out some more! :3
Rockprinsess123456 this was made in 1938 People especially women could be fired for the slightest mistakes They were abused and mentally tortured yet women helped mold ultimatley wht cinema is today Its so sad
Man it’s sad too see the comments from 4 and 5 years ago saying “the voice actor of sally is still alive” She may not be it now but if she is or isn’t she truly will be famous for her wonderful sally swinging :D
