There was nobody like her. As close to being an actual animated cartoon as a person can get. . That was Betty Hutton.

My dear departed Aunt, the talented and beautiful Debbie Reynolds … was discovered in 1948 when she did her impression of Betty Hutton singing “ I’m just a square in a social Circle” and of course won the contest….I…After watching this about Betty Hutton can now see where my aunt got her inspiration and style from. They were so much alike yet about 20 years apart in age. I’m sure they are both keeping everyone entertained in heaven now!

It is ironic that the luckiest day of her life was when the envious Ethel Merman cut her song from their show. Now, you watch 'Annie Get Your Gun', and you realize that neither Merman nor Judy Garland could have pulled it off like Betty Hutton did. The only word for her is Energy.

Betty Hutton had one fault and that was her insecurity and not realising how great she really was. When I watch any film she was in I realise when she is on the screen everybody else disappears as she is the only one you look at due to her sheer magnetism and charisma. I would put her at the top of all female artists for acting, dancing, and singing performance! I wish she had had a better life than she had for all the joy she gave her fans.

Betty Hutton was in a category all by herself. Dancing, singing, comedy were as natural to her as breathing. To go back in time and watch her films is an experience for any classic film addict. In many ways, she was the Bette Middler of her day but a lot less outrageous in her act. The most astonishing thing about this interview is her utmost honesty about her faults and failures both in show business and her personal life. She will always be an actress to remember and cherish.

No. Betty was in a class all by herself! She was beautiful, talented, & so sweet & kind! Loved her sincere energy as she danced & sang. She did comedy & drama too! She said when she replaced Judy Garland, her co-star, Howard Keel & the entire cast refused to speak to her & ignored her, never once appreciating her work. Yet, she filmed the whole movie & no one knew how hurt she was for being treated so badly! She did all those physical stunts & made everything look so easy! Wish I could have met her! God bless you Betty Hutton! You were really great & truely missed! Thank Heaven for films where we can enjoy you so much!🙏🏼💕🌟

I recall seeing this Betty Hutton interview when it first aired on the TCM channel and never forgot it. I was a fan of several of Betty's films and wanted to learn more about her, and wondered what life circumstances led her to Father McGuire's in Rhode Island. (She always called this time the most happy years of her life - I don't doubt it for a second). The very genial Robert Osborne (longtime "Turner Classic Movie" host) did so many great celebrity interviews over the years - this one just stands out in my view. In fact, Mr. Osborne would later call this interview his favorite. May both of these bright souls RIP. Cheers to all!

robert does a first class interview here, but it's betty's heart and honesty that make make this feel unique for me.. it's almost like being away from the business for so long set her free to be 100% herself without feeling guarded or worrying about the 'image' most stars try to project (particularly back in the golden age of hollywood). sad to see the pain that surfaces when she talks about her relationship with her family, but hopefully maybe they did see this and realize how much she needed them at this stage of her life (of course like any mother/grandmother does).

Betty was spot on while performing, if you pay very close attention to every slight face muscle, eye movement, expression, as well as body position, you can tell she had it down pat. When she sang, her words and even the tiniest movements were in time perfectly. A true master at her craft. To be so perfect over and over until it became second nature for her shows how hard she rehearsed. Her style filled a niche that somehow worked wonderfully, comedic, quirky, high energy off the chart, feminine and tomboyish at the same time. I fell in love with Betty as a fan with a star some years ago when i caught her performance of "Murder He Says" on that Bob Hope radio show around 1947, aired by TCM i believe. I started hunting down and watching her performances and was thoroughly impressed. I began to notice that i was seeing her stage persona and wondered what she was really like. It was this interview with Robert Osborne that let me into her true self. Notice her expressions while waiting for the camera to roll. They tell the tale ! Betty tells it herself , but if looks could kill! Take another look if you want to see that hidden pain she mentions. As sad as all that is, i'm glad to finally know Betty Hutton.

Just loved the interview with that "champion of acting", Ms. Betty Hutton. I wasn't born during Betty's peak Broadway and movie period. My knowledge of Ms. Hutton centers around that major timeless hit "Annie Get Your Gun". Betty, in a taxing role in a major musical, was the shows super-saving grace - bubbly and spontaneous as ever - her's was the perfectly balanced performance, rescuing even the louder scenes from going over-the-top. This was a wonderfully stimulating, always entertaining film that held the audience captivated from start to finish. The brilliant color, lavish sets, colorful costumes and lilting Irving Berlin tunes made it a super-duper hit. When Betty on train with Howard Keel croons "They say that falling in love is wonderful" [with the brilliant sunset in the background], it's hard not to stop the tears from flowing; that girl could tug at your heart-strings like no other. She was truly and "institution" in the acting and singing departments. Betty's characters in most films used brashness as a facade, a defense mechanism against the world to camouflage her deep insecurities. In real life Betty expressed a strongly-held opinion [see TCM interview] without holding back any emotions. Betty Hutton will forever remain timeless!!!!

Lovely fellow thought he had God-given authority to judge her/call her out on TV vs how he'd have treated a man w/such creative standards. Worse in Betty's time/hits nail on head, ie 'commodity,' like 'a hotdog or hamburger.

flenif2247.....I think there are/were a number of film and stage performers who are/were "difficult". One film star who became increasingly difficult was Judy Garland. She garnered a reputation for being late and not showing to work during many of her years at MGM. This behavior carried over into her later years with stage and television. Garland's personal life and substance abuse also made her difficult. Ethel Merman became more difficult during her Broadway career because she was so demanding with her presence. That proved to be more intimidating with less experienced performers. There are/were many labeled "difficult". Too many to mention all...

As a girl in the 1950's and 1960's ,when I had asthma attacks, I would watch old movies on tv. I loved Betty Hutton. I think now that the other Hollywood folks were jealous of her talent, beauty and natural comedic abilities. She found love and her place after she walked away from Hollywood. Bless you Betty. 🙏 Some day I will cross over to the other side and I hope to meet Betty. ❤

Hutton was an incredible talent, but in the words of her friend Dorothy Lamour when one day Hutton came to her and said, "Dorothy, why don't they like me?", in which Lamour replied, "honey, you can't treat people the way you do and expect them to like you".

I did not know that her children didn't attend her funeral. That speaks very badly of them. I've lost both my parents and the finality of death is terrible. I'm sure they carry the guilt with them that will never go away.

As a child, watching Betty on TV reminded me that it was OK to express the unadulterated joy of being silly. It's sad that her silliness came from the extreme pain in her childhood because that pain destroyed her adult life. Her repeated contact with her alcoholic mom pulled her down. Her children recognized that pattern, and decided to not repeat it with her. Alcoholic parents are very destructive all the time and every time. It's wonderful that Betty found support in the church.

As a kid growing up i the early sixties, they showed a lot of 1940 movies, and I enjoyed musical comedies. Miss Hutton was by far the one actress that I looked forward to watching her movies. Not saying that there wasn’t other actresses that I didn’t enjoy as a kid, but not as much as Miss Hutton.

I adored Betty Hutton from the time I was about 8 years old. She was absolutely talented, a beautiful woman, and I loved her singing and her comedy! I saw her in person in the 1950s at Lowes Capital Theatre in Wash. D.C. on stage. We sat in the first row and what a joy it was to my sister and me to see her in real life. We only had to pay $2.50 apiece. 😍🥰 Plus a movie, News Reel, and a cartoon. Also, we were allowed to see it over again the same day. Back then moviegoers weren't made to leave after the first show. 😉

Judy Whiting....yes, Betty was much more real on account of finding God and herself. Go back and look at those televised interviews of Judy Garland. Betty was right. Garland never found herself. With Garland it was still a facade when she was in her 40s. I used to be fascinated with Garland as a younger person. Now I am 63, and a lot of that fascination has diminished after having read and seen so much material on Garland. In fact, I have become rather disgusted due to her poor choices and not taking charge of her own life and her exaggerated tales, etc.....Betty Hutton, on the other hand, has become that real person whom I adore. Thank you, Betty for all the wonderful performances!!!

Such a talented woman. I loved her in Annie Get Your Gun. It's hard to believe that it was a difficult set. I thought the chemistry between Betty and Howard Keel was great on screen! This interviewer is really good, you don't get this type of interview anymore. He seems like a kind man. As for her children, they sound pretty bad.
