When we look into the gospels at the Pharisees and see the confrontations they had with Jesus, it is hard to find anything good about them. They did do some things right, but as men who spent so much time searching the Scriptures they failed to understand many of the most important matters of life and faith. As Christians today, we run that same risk. In this message, Dr. Sproul reminds us of Jesus’ warning to “Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees.”
This is the 2nd in a series of messages by Dr. Sproul on pleasing God. See other videos in the series: • Pleasing God - R.C. Sp...

There was once a man who loved being righteous so much that he devoted his life to becoming it. When he eventually died and met God, they didn't recognize each other. At the same time, another man loved God so much, he devoted his life to seeking a relationship with Him. When he died, Jesus said, "this is my friend. He's with me".

Righteousness is actually the second portion of faith. On the way of life through the kingdon of God, righteousness should place you in the middle court. Holiness is required to get into the holy of holies--remembering that the ultimate call to all of us is "Seek my face." Righteousness is a commitment to accept God's will as our own. It also includes an increase in faith. Obviously, we will fail many times. We need the faith to count on God's grace to forgive the repentant.

Don’t do anything for God if it isn’t out of love for Jesus Christ. If you do it to keep God on your side, then you are Cain. It’s easy to obey for the wrong reason, and that reason is the heart and mind. If you believe your money should be tithed, then do it with joy and faith in God making the ninety percent you keep work better than the 100%! If you can only give 3% with joy, then you do that! You share the light of salvation to those in darkness out of loving service to your Lord and compassion for those perishing in their sins, as you were, not following a commandment to keep your membership in Saint Peters logbook. I am praying for us all, that we will all have a greater knowledge of how to walk and talk in peace and joy in a manner that glorifies God, no matter our circumstances. God’s grace to us all!

the religious leaders (pharisees) looked down on the people for their sin casting condemnation upon them .. God looks at us as slaves in need of deliverance stuck in sin. We dont know why people get stuck, its their choices but also under privilege and misfortune. Jesus came to this people and rejected the religious leaders who were oppressing them... Christ walked with us here at the bottom and died to forgive our sin, setting us free in spirit first leading to freedom physically next

Some really unbelievable comments about tithing that indicate that the individuals are not Orthodox in their understanding of the Doctrine of Scripture. Probably most are taught by the false teaching of Dispensationalism. "All Scripture is God breathed and profitable for Doctrine, for reproof, correction and instruction in Righteousness". II Timothy 3:16,17. Paul was referring primarily to the Old Testament. Whether or not tithing is a New Testament requirement is not important. We should remember that 100 percent of what we have and earn belongs to God. 10 percent is the minimum that we should be giving back to him. Actually, it should be greater than that. God loves a cheerful giver, so be cheerful and give sacrificially. Stop playing games with the Scriptures and picking and choosing what you want to obey. You have clear teaching about giving in the New Testament. Read II CORINTHIANS 8 and 9.

Hebrews 10:14 - “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.” Ephesians 1:13 - In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Ephesians 4:30 - And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. When we trust Jesus as our savior, He imputes His righteousness to us, and will no more impute sin to our account. Romans 4:6-8. AMAZING GRACE, JESUS PAID IT ALL AND WE PAID 0. IT IS FREE. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The wages of sin, disobedience, is death for all men. Paul wasn't saying we sin under grace, he said we don't, God forbids it. This is the problem with the reformation. They teach lawlessness. Jesus obeyed so I don't have to. It is nonsense. What did Jesus say to be saved? Love me with all your heart and obey me, keep my commandments. Romans 8: We are not condemned because we walk in obedience to the law of God, in the righteousness of the law. RC Sproul claims that is Jesus righteousness. Is that what you believe also? Mathew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. 1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. (We obey the law for salvation, justification.) 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. I suggest you pick up your bible and read it. God gives us his Spirit so we can be righteous just like his son. We are not rags.

First John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive our selves and the TRUTH is not in us. Only self righteous Pharisees believe they have no sin. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, and we all sin, First John 1:8, and we all die, but the GIFT of God is eternal life. Eternal life is a gift from God. Not a reward for good behavior, but a free gift. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved, (what Jesus did for us) through faith, (when we believe it) and that not of yourselves, (we did nothing for it) It is the GIFT of God, NOT OF WORKS, (we can not earn heaven) lest any man should boast. Romans 3:26-28. Jesus paid it all and we paid 0. It is free.

Jesus said this to be saved. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that HE gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, that WHOSOEVER, BELIEVETH IN Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:18 Believers are no longer condemned, but unbelievers are condemned already because the have not believed on the name of the Son of God. First John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God, that ye may KNOW YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. The gospel. First Corinthians 15:1-4, That Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures, that He was buried and rose again on the third day, according to the scriptures. The second we accept His payment for our sin, He seals us with the Holy Spirit of promise. Ephesians 1:13-14. Our guarantee of eternal life. He paid our sin debt in full so we would not have to go to hell to pay for them. First John 2:2 And He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. But, only those who have believed it are saved. First Corinthians 1:21 John 6:47, John 5:24 John 10:28-29. Double eternal security.

I heard a glimpse of RC talking about the difference between Pharisees and Sadducees. He said they really didn't like each other but that they could agree in their mutual contempt of Jesus. I think he was relating to Mark 12 where the Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus about who the wife was who married some brothers who kept dying. If anyone has access to a link where RC is teaching on this, please stick it here for me.

How can a learned man like RC teach tithing, and use the tired old Malachai verse to do so? So confused. Obviously the Pharisees were under the law and should have tithed. Just shows how ingrained the tithe is in modern day evangelicalism.

Motivation is not intrinsically righteous and thus should not be measured on a congruent scale. The level of hate that drives one to murder is not noble because it is extreme. So, the pharisees efforts should not be notably attributed to them because it was extreme. Evil motivation has it's extremes.

It is my understanding the tithe (that is to say offering) has been fulfilled by Jesus Christ being the ultimate sacrifice. Of course one should tithe while Jesus was alive, since he was not yet sacrificed. After he sacrificed/offered himself the ceremonial laws (which include tithing/offering) are abolished or rather fulfilled. That being said, being charitable in acts and with your money is ALWAYS the right thing to do (be a cheerful giver not a reluctant giver by duty), but tithes/offerings as a commandment of law I thought were abolished by Jesus offering himself for us.

Well, its all to do with the heart. The reformers all taught that Justification and sanctification ARE Inseparable!!!!!!! 11.On justification .... Eph and Gal... all talk about the works of the flesh..... walk in the Spirit. JESUS IS OUR ALPHA born again Jesus is also our Omega. Our resurrection newness of life. The problem is we dont believe the resurrection as we ought... We believe in Justification By Grace ALONE. BUT it is never Alone in the person Justified...Love your weakest brother and sister if we do not how can we say we Love God who we have not seen....By their fruit ye shall know THEM. Remember the old Israel just has leaves Justification of mouth. Hosanna in the highest spread their garments and palm leaves then in moments they cried out crucify Him crucify Him...Justification because of who they claimed to be. Theif on the cross. 7 fruits of the Spirit. Love for his neighbour dont you fear God? We Justly,prayer remember me, readiness of Gods forgiveness...etc....weather we live for an hour or 100years fruit.. Who would except John the Baptist preaching today...😚

He was raised for our justification. He intercedes for us when we sin to cleanse us of all unrighteousness. They claim it is all about prayer because of this once and done justification cult teaching. Bible says our old sins were forgiven. God does not forgive our evil before we do evil. He wants our love and obedience. They throw that in the trash also claiming Jesus lived for us. Luther and Calvin were abominations and along with Darby have done so much damage. Amazes me when the bible says he gives eternal life to those who believe in him, to those who love him, James 1 and to those who obey him, Heb 5, Rev 22 and they still claim it is faith without love. Paul said it was faith working through love. Love Christ or lake of fire. I could write a book on how messed up Luther was. Oh, but the law will make no man righteous. Yes, but that is outside of faith which they just can't get. Anyone who claims to be saved and does evil, breaks the law, is of the devil, unrighteous. Paul should have used some different words but I guess God knows best. He that practices righteousness is righteous, just as Christ was righteous. Ezekiel 36 explains this. We must walk in obedience to God's law by the Spirit.

Well it ends just as its getting to the good part…It’s like watching a happily ever after and never seeing how that is to be accomplished. Why did the Pharisees fail? What could they have done to not fail? And very interestingly Yeshua said the weightier matters of the law and included faith…? Is He suggesting that these guys didn’t believe in God? Naturally not they obviously believed and as RC said put their money where their mouths were. God for them was a fulltime vocation. They believed….so then what faith is Christ pointing to? This question of how to live as a Christian is fundamental to what Christianity even is. How can we live by faith….how can the just live by faith…if they call faith belief? Add to this the bar Christ sets is not actually higher than these men it’s Himself…He is the bar….perfection. We don’t …well I don’t get there for 5 seconds out of every day, how is the gospel good news for me? I struggle with gluttony as an example I struggle with far more than that but just as a place to begin…I’m terrible when it comes to ice-cream…and I have the waistline to evidence that. Personally I am very sure that where I more disciplined when it comes to food I would be a much happier and more fulfilled person. Gluttony you see affects me; is a personal detriment. There are some sins of or at least that appear to be of pleasure, but gluttony is not one of them…I‘m a slave to my lusts for food. Righteousness seems like something God wants from us, but in fact He wants it for us. Yet we have very little interest in the good life as God sees it…and that is just stupid, but I am not a stupid man. I see the truth my problem is living it. So what is faith and just as interesting what is sin? People often point to satan and say here is the adversary, but satan is not my problem I am. The truth is satan was certainly better off before he fell. Sin is a problem we both have in common; he isn’t the master of it. Yes true he spreads it like a viruses but so do we. Sin is the problem faith is the cure and just at the point where we might hear about these the video ends. It is true that you can read the book… Churches are full of people that do and ministers who like the Pharisees are studied in the word, but again I have an issue. If reading and studying the word works why are there so many different interpretations? Getting right back to Yeshua….you study the scriptures…why didn’t it work for the Pharisees. Christianity is not about what we do Paul said it’s a work of God in us, and he tells us about faith too. He tells us that we are saved not by work but by grace through faith and while a lot of people are drawn to the grace aspect…the gift they don’t recognise that grace is effective because of the faith they don’t have and don’t understand…faith they would call belief. Can a man fly? I have heard stories of people who have taken different substances and become convinced they could…I don’t know anyone personally and these may just be urban legends, but either way the outcome of making the attempt seems obvious. Gravity wins every time, no matter how fervent the belief. Yet Peter by faith walked on water and as his faith failed he sank. Clearly faith and belief are cousins or at least there is a connection, but just as clearly, they are not one and the same thing. Belief is in the mind; faith is like it but in the Spirit and our trouble is that we are born spiritually dead. So faith cannot work to perform the function it was meant to perform in us. Dead seem rather final. After all most often when a person dies they stay that way. I think though that just as we have a warped view and understanding of faith and sin we can also include death. I would offer that to be dead is to be unable to achieve that for which we were created. Physical death causes the body to be completely inanimate, but the body is still there and it may be with intervention a person can be brought back, so it need not be permanent. There was still a point at which the body was fully unable to function and so dead. Perhaps it is similar with the spirit. Perhaps that is the aim of Christianity, Spiritual rebirth and faith is the evidence of that having taken place, as faith is spiritual in nature just as belief is physical. While most seem focused on good works and I suspect those can be physical in nature just as belief, both having been performed in the past and both having being described as inadequate for salvation are clearly not defining Christianity….

Patrick Edgington My friend you are seeking and that is awesome. We must admit we are blind so we can be given sight. You make a remarkable statement that “Satan” isn’t the problem and that you are. I believe in isolating and showing you exactly what Scripture interprets Satan as will be a piece of the mystery that will help you to unbury even more awesome freeing mysteries of the Scripture. If you are still seeking and desire to test the evidence I bring forth and I using ONLY Scripture can establish in the mouth of two or more witnesses in Scripture these truths. I’d love to share this with anyone truly yearning for a cohesive understanding of the Book God wrote and intended Us All to know and understand. I’ll start by telling you I can prove that “Satan” is our carnal ego because the Bible tells is this but many don’t know their own Bibles. As it says we seek a king to rule over us. Because the wilderness is tough. It’s likened to burning in Scripture. And Hell is where we all are when in the dark or ignorant of these truths about Gods Love. I can prove all this with ONLY Scripture as it were. You know, The unleavened bread that we are to eat of. Even a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. And leaven is....👇 and bread is Gods true doctrine Matthew 4:4 (KJV) But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Sent via BLB app for Apple Matthew 16:12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. Just message me brother if you want to put to the test the true gospel, It will stand in its own as Gods tongue interprets itself. These are the gifts of tongues and interpretations and they are gifts because only faith in God will allow you to receive the sight for your blindness, Understanding for your deafness and the ability to speak or confess the truth/Christ as we are dumb and can’t speak it until we receive it. 🙏 You seem to be where I was myself not long ago and I was there for 18 years just searching and searching. I know far too many doctrines of men and I’m feel foolish that it took me so long to go into the wilderness and eat only the bread from heaven. I can show you some amazing truths and when you can see them yourself you can drink of the water of Christ well that springs up to everlasting life and never thirst again. Luke 8:11 (KJV) Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 2 Corinthians 9:10 (KJV) Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for [your] food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) Matthew 13:37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; Matthew 13:38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; John 4:14 (KJV) But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent me, That ALL that seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up on the last day. John 6:29. Jesus, answered, and said unto them. This is the work of God, that ye believe on the one He has sent. John 3:18. Believers are no longer condemned to hell, but unbelievers are condemned already because they have not believed on the name of the Son of God. First John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that BELIEVE on the name of the Son of God, that ye may KNOW YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. Thank God. Romans 6:23 For the penalty for sin is death, and we all sin, First John 1:8, and we all die, BUT, ( I love that BUT), the GIFT of God is ETERNAL LIFE. Why? Because no one can earn it. Romans 4:5-8. Romans 3:26-28. There will be no boasting in heaven. You cannot boast in free. John 6:47. John 3:16. I am a WHOSOEVER. Therefore I have eternal life, because God cannot lie. John 3:18.

Larry Johnston salvation is simple. Put your full faith in Jesus Christ. Doing so you receive the Holy Spirit which guides you telling you to do what is right. That is the works. Works are the fruit, not what saves

RC tries to dance around it but in essence he’s saying - look at the Pharisees - we think they were hypocrites but look at how amazingly righteous they were in regard to keeping the law and shouldn’t we be like that. This comes from a mind set inculcated with Calvin’s writing who was lacking in certain areas of understanding In regard to the law and the works of the law that’s makes all the things Paul said about this nothing more than slogans.
@knpstrr

@@ljjdcm That wasn't exactly what I heard here. My understanding was that he wasn't saying "shouldn't we be that like that" (like the Pharisees). Rather, lets NOT be like them, by that I mean for Christians to reduce Christianity to ONLY faith and no "externalities" as he calls them here or works. Just as a Christian may say the Pharisee was mistaken because they are all works and no faith, and a Pharisee may say a Christian is mistaken by all faith and no works! The proper way, as R.C. says here, is the middle way: a FULL faith (salvation) that manifests itself externally by good works (sanctification/righteousness), that comes by a life living in the Spirit. I've had discussion with people that claim they are Christians on RU-vid asking what do we need to read the Bible for? As a Christian if you have faith in Jesus that he died for you, you are saved, so why do you need the Bible? This is what I think R.C. is getting at here, avoiding this type of Christianity. The "claim it and forget it" religion.

@@knpstrr Well, I agree that what you say was RC's point would apply to the folks you mentioned but for normal believers it would be N/A - for if good works flow from true saving faith (as it does) then it goes without saying - but no, he's talking about obedience/ works of the law and though we have all those good intentions that flow out of our born again "want to", reformed theology always mixes in the law and works ("the middle way") to such an extent that it results in a demand to love more and to be more obedient. - inadvertently putting folks back under the Law and keeping them continually sin conscious because we always fall short. (vs. Heb.10)

@@ljjdcm That is interesting that is your interpretation of what was said here. I did not have that impression at all. It seemed pretty clear to me that he was talking about Christians so-called that say they have faith and they stop there and his call was not to do so, but to do good works, not for salvation but for sanctification (righteousness) sake. We both carry preconceived notions that we apply to all things we interact with and perhaps that is the difference of how we heard this material above. Thanks for your polite discussion.

Mr Nelson , i don't think what I say below is for you as much for perhaps someone who might agree with you , but negatively so , ------- This side of life is confounding to understand , , In the Midwest there can be days with overcast clouds & not a drop of rain , while in Florida there can be days with clear blue skies & it starts raining , , What is fair or unfair , , flowers with thorns , cacti with flowers , , Whatever style or color of vehicle you like , almost everyone else likes something different , Who else likes everything just like you like , , you might like to be up north for winters , or not , but it also goes for opportunities to do things or be successful at , But , look back at your life so far , it still seems so not too long ago you were still in school & playing with your friends , & by now you can be filled with a whole bucket full of "if only , , , " Well , ok , but how does GOD like what you are doing , or likes what you see or even like , , Maybe GOD does like how you're doing with what you got , & maybe you just want more of what somebody else has - just like many others would relish to have just some of the comforts you have ,

He just said Jesus obeyed for us so we don't have to for our salvation, we can continue in evil and still be saved. In Mathew 5 Jesus was saying we must obey the law of God, turn from sin, or we will not be saved. He does not understand what righteousness is. It is obeying God's law in faith not outside faith like the Pharisees. Jesus was saying they were totally unrighteous. You cannot be righteous without faith. He is teaching lawlessness. It is our righteousness, not Christ's. Ezekiel 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. This is what Mathew 5 is all about. He that sins is of the devil, is unrighteous. We don't get Christ's righteousness. How were all the saints in the OT saved. They believed in the gospel. They recieved the blood after the cross. They did not recieve the life of Christ he had not lived yet. Where is that in the bible. He was raised for our justification for our ongoing sin. He cleanses us and justifies us all our lives before the Father. Search for it. 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. According to RC Sproul this is Christ again but it says we are righteous because we do, we walk in obedience to God's law, just as Christ did. RC does not even know what righteousness is. It is only for those who love God in the Spirit not the flesh. Psalm 119:172 My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness. 173 Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts. 174 I have longed for thy salvation, O Lord; and thy law is my delight. Romans 8: There is no condemnation for those in Christ who walk in obedience to the law of God by the Spirit, which pleases God, Again, this is our righteousness. RC Sproul claims this is Christ walking for us. Wow, Luther must have had a sin problem he just could not get over. 18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Tithing is NOT a new testament principle! I'm sorry, I like RC but that is duel covenant theology! We are nowhere commanded to tithe in the NT. We are to be cheerful giver... to all who have need!

mark white R.C. Sproul is simply expositing Jesus’ teaching “you tithe mint and dill and cumin...These you ought to have done” (Matthew 23:23). Are there many who disagree with tithing? Yes, and they have valid arguments. Is R.C. teaching scripturally? Yes, and throwing out a fancy made up theological word is no counter to the teaching of Jesus Christ in Matthew 23. You may be interested to know that R.C. is a covenantal Presbyterian, not dispensational. He follows the theology of the Puritans like Spurgeon, Edwards, and Henry much more than modern evangelicals like MacArthur or Grudem.

@@miniwars123 I know he was, my point is he was inferring to the congregation, audience he was speaking to that tithing is where we should start, he even said that 4 percent of evangelicals In America at that time tithe of their income ( somthing Paul NEVER instructed the church to do! ) it is false teaching to ask a new testament church for tithes! It was part of the Mosaic covenant with Israel and not part of the New Covenant. There is NO scriptural support for such a teaching. Any asking of a Christian to perform any form of work from the Mosaic covenant is putting people back under the law. The book of Galatians speaks against this! And so will I.

miniwars123 what an unjust reciting if matthew 23:23. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees who were under the law for tithing (a small act) and failing to do those things which matter more in the law, judgement mercy an grace as they ought! Tithing to make things right Jesus calls them blind gnats. He said woe unto them for doing as such! Following the old but ignoring the new!

@@knpstrr let's actually look at the text, Note: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. *These you OUGHT to have done, WITHOUT neglecting the others.* You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel! Matthew 23:23‭-‬24 ESV I want to be gracious because we all can change views throughout the years. I see your comment is from a year ago, but perhaps you stand by that comment, if so I think you failed to consider the point emphasized above. In your reply to miniwars it seems you assume that Jesus rebuked them for tithing as well as ignoring the weightier matters, but it seems from the text such is not the case. Indeed the text states, "These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others" The "these" refers to the things tithed and those things *ought* to have been done *without neglecting the others,* the more important matters, justice, mercy and faithfulness. So if I'm correct in understanding your reply you failed to consider the whole text and wrongly rebuked your brother or sister, ironically accusing them of the very thing you did.

He just does not get it at all or he is deceiving. Righteousness of the law is not the righteousness of God, it is unrighteousness. Obedience of faith or good works or the works in James is righteousness. Trying to claim the Pharisees were righteous when Jesus said their father was the devil just shows how messed up this guy is. He follows Luther and Calvin and has thrown his bible in the trash. No matter how he spins it God wants our obedience, he wants our love, which is our worship. Faith without works, without love, without obedience is a false dead faith. The Catholics added unrighteous works to our faith but this guy throws the very reason God created us, to love him and obey him, our righteousness, in the trash. And this is all about salvation, not sanctification.

This man's version of biblical theology is deeply flawed. What God requires MOST of His children is NOT righteousness. It is overwhelmingly FAITH. For without faith, the Word of God says that it is IMPOSSIBLE to please God!!! This man was a false teacher. He was teaching many lies to his "followers".

Joséphine Kérézit I humbly point you to 6:15 in the video where R.C. Sproul lays out the Biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone. When R.C. is teaching about righteousness, he’s speaking on God’s will for disciples of Christ who already believe, for “the just shall live by his faith” and “without faith it is impossible to please [God]” (Hab. 2:4, Heb. 11:6). Nevertheless the Bible also teaches believers “this is the will of God, even your sanctification” (1 Thess. 4:3).

And tell me, how are you "justified by faith"? _For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."_ (Rom 4:3; also Rom 4:9, Rom 4:22, Gal 3:6, Jam 2:23) If God didn't require righteousness out of you then your faith would have no meaning, as Jesus' death would have served no purpose.
@knpstrr
@knpstrr 4 года назад
R.C. would admit faith is first and foremost - you can't even begin in true righteousness without first having faith. But what do we do once we have faith? Just go on living as we did? Make no effort at all to live more like Christ? This the manner of these talks, what do we do after we have faith. We clearly are told that if he abides in us and us in him than we should walk as he walked. We don't have faith and just forget about doing anything after that. To say faith is the end of Christianity is to short-change God. Faith is the beginning of Christianity! Once you have faith we go out into the dark world as a shining light, displaying our good works to the world, not for salvation but for sanctification to please God and to hopefully attract others to the faith by our example.

Faith is a gift from God. Exercising this gift is God's will, but RC is right that we are called to be holy as God is holy. That's why we have the Holy Spirit, he wants to renew our minds and walk in Jesus' righteousness.
