I've heard so many good things about Beyer Dynamic as a whole I figured the DT990's would be pretty epic considering how good some headphones in this price range are. I came away from my experience impressed and a little confused. They have a bit of a weird frequency response. But that weird frequency response is great for gaming. Even Ninja uses them.

After a few months using these as my daily drivers, the high end has definitely mellowed. They are still very present but the sibilance doesn't stab the way it used to. Thanks Eric Chavez Vazquez for making me pay more attention!

@@DetroitTech I know this was a year ago but I want to point this out regardless. That's not a point against Mac's comment, that's a point against your script writing. If people wouldn't watch the rest of your video if you structured it as such, all that means it that the "rest" of the video is pointless fluff and isn't worth watching in the first place. Why not just write your videos to be informative rather than spaced out so viewers don't have to time-stamp it themselves in the comments to skip the extraneous and useless talking? My two cents.

With higher highs, you can have a lower volume when mixing/mastering and won't be turning up the volume every so often from ear fatigue. I have a pair of HD600s and just got the DT 990 Pros and I actually can mix longer with the 990s at a lower volume. With the HD600 I found myself turning up the volume more often because it has more recessed highs.

You did a very good job describing the DT 990s. I am one of many who find the exquisite treble detail very satisfying and unique. There are very few headphones that even come close to them in the treble range. The sound stage is amazing with excellent separation and extended detail comprehension across the frequency range. the bass is not lacking in power or finesse. but it is the superb treble that put these headphones in a class by themselves. They work very well with many music genres. The DT 990s have been around since 1985. Their sound signature is unique and sublime. They are modern classics...That being said, the OB-1s have their own distinctive sound signature. They are darker, not as detailed as the DT990s. They are more relaxing, less fatiguing. They are warmer, less analytical, but still surprisingly rich in detail. You can have two different but quality music experiences with both of these headphones. I really like how you compare headphones. I also have been impressed with your selections. Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I use these on the daily when gaming (for now). I'm mostly playing PUBG with a little Overwatch thrown in. The DT990's are very good at stereo separation. They're very good at giving me left/right information. But these are built for music first, not gaming. They don't have positional audio like some surround sound headphones. Yes, totally. Sadly Massdrop often only offer 32ohm version of it most of the time(I think). The 600 ohm one sound the best as long as you have a ok amp. Given that now you can buy a JDS lab atom for a $100, that means everyone can afford an amp that can push the 600ohm 990/880 to its fullest potential.

Sounded great for the two plus years they lasted. Loved the solid bass/sub bass they have for open backs at this price point. I was shocked when one earcup went dead due to cable issue, the other just plain dead, driver fault. I know what you're thinking, I misused them. Well you'd be dead wrong, I'm not that guy who abuses his electronics into oblivion while calling that 'normal' or worse, gentle - my shit lasts. I loved these things and babied them at home like you wouldn't believe, even got 90deg adapter so the plug was never bent stressed and the cable still failed. I see there are many such cable/driver problems with lower priced Beyer DT cans. If within warranty they'll be fixed or replaced mind you, but tbh I never expected this from 'handmade German' headphones that seem so well built and rugged. I have far cheaper mass produced cans that have lasted longer with similar care, including a 12yo pair of Sony MDR7506.

That's a bummer to hear! I really do like these cans. I haven't had any issues with them yet but it's really only been a few months. They may even be getting sidelined in the next couple months because I'll be getting the HiFiMan HE4XX from Massdrop. Come back for that review.

That sucks. I've had the opposite experience with my 4 year old pair. I've accidentally sat on mine, yanked the cable and dropped them countless times, yet I haven't had a single problem aside from hairs touching the drivers every once in a while. Sounds to me like you got a lemon.
@damonreynolds6775
@damonreynolds6775 5 лет назад
I'd agree I got a lemon if my case were isolated. But it happens enough to these non detachable DTs to be a feature, not a bug. And yes I think the heavy cables are self destructive of the very wires they're meant to protect. My mass produced ATH-M40x and 50x cables are way superior in durability. So again, sorry but in 2019 'hand made' to me means 'hope for the best'.

The frequency response chart at 4:50 seems to be an industry standard and using these headphones is prerequisite to a functional mix in my experience although it is interesting to compare this to the sound on Yamaha NS 10's. My 990's had a broken cord near the jack that is difficult to fix because the conductor cannot be soldered as it is probably aluminium or some other non-solder conductor. It can only be crimped on or just twisted and shrink rapped; a typical German attempt at building in obsolescence.

I don't think these would work very well with just a PS4. It looks like you would need to take the optical port out of the console to a headphone amp. These require quite a bit of juice to run. I would suggest a Magni 3 for the amp. Pricewise, it's hard to beat. The DT990's do not have a mic attached. For that, I would suggest the ModMic amzn.to/2KJCFP0. You can basically install it on your headphones. That would be cheaper and more space friendly than a separate USB mic.

So, is it worth nowadays? Can I get anything better for the same price in Europe? I can't get Sennheiser Drop models 6xx and Jubilee in Europe (maybe only from Ebay, which would end up 200 EUR with taxes and shipping), but I can get DT990 Edition or DT880 for 140 EUR. From Sennheiser I can get their new 560S for 200 EUR but not sure if I'd like the famous "Sennheiser veil". Even if I get DT990, I would do some simple mod to tame the highs a bit (just some foam, as recommended by Solderdude on diyaudioheaven. Also, I'm a bit wary of Beyerdynamic quality lately - people say they can differ a lot from "excellent" to "is it a fake?". A person bought three DT880 and they all sounded different. So, not sure if Beyerdynamic is the same "German quality" anymore. Essentially, I'm looking for comfortable open-back headphones for both working at home and also listening to music in background, and then in my free time I do some hobby-level audio production just for fun, nothing serious. So, I'd need something neutral-ish but also not boring sounding (otherwise I would overcompensate and put basses and highs too high in my mixes - yeah, I'm so used to that fun V-shape sounding).

hey guys ! just a quick question, i'm thinking of buying either the 250 or the 600 ohm , i don't have an ext amp, but my PC has a good sound card with a built in headphone amp going to 600 ohms and a 116db SNL , it's the ASUS STRIX soar 7.1 , most headphones plugged in sound really loud , i had a friend trying his 230$ beats on it and they blew his ear off, he had never heard them sound like that, anyway would that be good or do i need an ext amp ?
@DetroitTech
@DetroitTech 5 лет назад
If you want to go that route, I'd suggest going with the 250 ohm version. I'm sure it would be fine, it might just make the dynamic range a bit smaller. I would recommend looking at the 89 ohm version. You should have zero issues there. Unfortunately, I just don't have much experience with sound cards to really give more than that.

Just returned a pair of Grado SR80e headphones because the highs were unbearable. I thought my ears were going to bleed. ;-) I have a pair of these Beyerdynamics coming tomorrow and in the past couple of days I've read reviews about the high end on these. I am a high end guy, not low. I look for the crispness in the sound. (Therefore, I can't stand Beats) so I thought I could never be overwhelmed by the higher frequencies but with the Grados I was wrong. I do not know if you've ever used the Grados, but do you know if these 990s are as harsh as the Grados?

I prefer the HD650s. It's definitely a personal thing, though. The 650's are a definitely more flat and clinical, which I usually like. Hi! I'm going to buy the Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro headphones (250ohm) and after doing some research I realised I'll be needing an amp for those. (Thought of buying Behringer HA400, is is good?). However I stumbled across this DAC thing and now I don't know whether I'd be also needing it or not? I'll be using my headphones with my pc which has Gigabyte z97x gaming 7 as a motherboard (it's said to be able to drive 600ohm loads). So yeah, do I also need DAC or will I be just fine without one? I'd be so grateful if someone shed some light on this one!!
@DetroitTech
@DetroitTech 4 года назад
If you have the cash, getting a DAC is something you should do. If you're strapped for cash, the DAC can wait. Not everyone will agree but you'll get more bang for your buck getting new headphones and an amp than a DAC. I"m not sure the Behringer is going to really be able to power the 250ohm DT990. I'd recommend something like the Schiit Magni and Modi and a great entry level amp and dac or the Hel for a little bit less expensive amp/dac combo.

@@DetroitTech Behringer HA400: that’s a hard “no.” It has a different purpose: to enable you to use up to four mid-ohm headphones at once. As a driver of high impedance headphones, it is the wrong product. It delivers a max of 40 mW into 100 ohm, which means it will provide a max of 16mW into 250 ohm. Not enough to drive these bad boys.

And no I'm not someone who tosses my cans around or yank on cables and call that 'gentle'. Ironic something that feels so rugged is the physically weakest headphones I've ever owned. I'm really new to this whole audio thing. I have a pair of turtle beach headphones right now and I would like to upgrade to these. He said that to get the full sound you would want an amplifier to plug it into the computer. What Amplifiers would you reccomend for using these headphones for my pc? also do I need a sound card to use these fully?
@DetroitTech
@DetroitTech 6 лет назад
You wouldn't need a sound card to use these fully. The sound card would just act as a DAC or digital to analog converter. Your computer has one already. As far as amps go, I couldn't give you a specific one, honestly. I have an M-Audio 2x2 interface which has a headphone amp built in and allows me to use my music production software. I would suggest checking out reddit.com/r/headphones and see what kind of amps they're using. Check out Amazon and find some in your price range and read the reviews. Some amps really bring their own sound and some are more transparent. It's all a personal taste thing. Sorry I couldn't give you an exact idea. Let me know what you pick up!
@manmeetpaul2336
@manmeetpaul2336 6 лет назад
Soundcards provide audio processing along with some amplification. My sb z for example can drive headphones like this one easily. Although it wouldn't be the best for it for the price but the cs flagship dac in it and the sbx pro virtual surround in games definitely makes up for it. At around 70 bucks you cannot get better. You get a dac, audio processor and virtual surround along with amp you could drive impedance heavy headphones with. That said a dac amp combo would be suited if you listen to music more.

after a few days with these I have the same exact opinion. They're good, but the highs are definitely too harsh and unnatural to me. I get amazing results with an EQ, but I'm not a fan of using an EQ all the time. Why BD put there that spike is beyond me. Anyways accurate tests showed that break-in is mostly just a myth. So If you like them a few months later chances are that your hearing just got used to them.

@DetroitTech
@DetroitTech 6 лет назад
I love open backed headphones. I haven't mixed on these but if you're using reference tracks you should be fine. The open back is great because you don't get as much boom as you do with the closed back, in general. It's great, too, because you can get a better feel of how it sounds in not so isolated of an environment.

They're relatively flat. they have a couple spikes in the high end and a little bit of a flat bump in the lows. They're definitely not a "V" shaped EQ curve like Beats. But personally, I prefer headphones that are flatter. It's more true to what the musicians had in mind when recording the song and usually means the headphones are higher quality because they're not trying to hide the lack of clarity and detail underneath a giant low end.
