People need to understand that songwriting goes beyond penning lyrics. Beyoncé's strength lies in writing melodies and arranging harmonies and backgrounds which, as Ne-Yo stressed, is writing.
@MB I didn't say that's all she does. I said that's A strength she has. The video states that she has written lyrics. Multiple people say she writes lyrics. There is video of her writing lyrics. I'm aware that she writes lyrics. But she is more proficient (and prefers) at writing melody. And I'd argue that melody is more important than words because that is the skeleton lyrics are built around and the part that is most remembered.

Michael and Whitney never implied that they wrote a song that someone else wrote. Neither did they attempt to take credit for the creative work of others. In fact, with Michael, we learned when his demos from Off the Wall and Thriller were released, we learned that he deserved far greater credit for production than he received.
EXACTLY, and the thing is that Michael was ACTUALLY a songwriter. He wrote songs for his siblings, himself and other people. He also was a producer and NEVER took credit for someone else’s work.

It sucks that when writers stand up for themselves they risk blackballing themselves or compromising business relationships. There’s such a power imbalance between the ‘superstar celebrities’ and the jobbing songwriters. It’s also annoying that people can come in change two words and get a writing credit and share a split of the publishing profits in perpetuity. Then go to the media acting like they wrote the song, totally erasing your contributions.🙄 Edit: I know there are also star writers/producers who aren’t gonna be intimidated. Like nobody’s gonna boss around a Max Martin or Ryan Tedder, Diane Warren and Linda Perry weren’t to be messed with in their prime.

Fair enough if you made a reasonable contribution, but changing one or two words and then taking a share of my rightfully earned publishing feels like getting finger fkkd, esp if 6-10 people do it because they know it’s an easy way to stack credits. They’re literally taking money out of your pocket, money that could amount to that writer losing out on 10,000’s of dollars for that song over 5-10-15 plus years. Every percentage point adds up. I’ve heard first hand accounts of writers being bullied or peer pressured into portioning off their publishing for *negligible* contributions. People taking credit for stuff they didn’t write. A lot of people get burned and it fks them up. I remember being told about this one dude in LA writing sessions he would set up a camera and record every single writing session so nobody could ever lie and he’d always have video proof. He’d been screwed over in the past and j wasn’t gonna let ever happen again. People thought he was a weirdo for doing that though. Maybe he was onto something though? Maybe music publishing needs more transparency? Maybe writing camps should be recorded?

The way the other 3 girls constantly praised Beyoncé in every interview while she stared them down was so creepy to me. If any of them gave anyone else credit for something, you can see her rolling her eyes or making shady facial expressions. You can tell she treated the other members like crap.

I remember the story about her saying she came up with bootylicious after hearing the guitar riff on the plane but years later the writer and producer said that the demo was mostly done by the time it got to bey and when he confronted Matthew about it, Matthew told him that the fans don’t want to hear about the behind the scenes team making a song but about the idea of their favorite artist coming up with something to relate to them because that’s more marketable. I guess that’s just how the business works.

It’s be cool to see a video about Mariah Carey’s writing process. She’s credited as a sole writer or one of few on many of her albums. The journey of a song has always intrigued me!
I've read interviews with producers who say they love working with her because she obviously writes, composes, arranges and records all the vocal so easily and efficiently, it makes their job easy. Mariah does not get credit for being all those things on every single album since her frickin demo tape. She's got 19 hits for a reason, she is super skilled and no one ever accuses her of stealing credit.

As a Beyhive myself, I can say that Matthew clearly tried to make Beyoncé seem like a triple threat. His marketing strategy was smart and props to him for that. @Day You missed/proved my point. The "I am telling you" song is the most famous song from the Dreamgirls stage play. It's a powerhouse song and it's sung by Jennifer's character in the movie. "Listen" is a new powerhouse song they created just for the movie. I think they did that so Beyonce could have a big song, too, and maybe bigger than Jennifer's.

The cast recording won two Grammy awards, Best Musical Album and Best Vocal Performance for Jennifer Holliday's "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going". Dreamgirls is a famous play. "I am telling you" is the most famous song from that play. Everyone remotely familiar with the play or even just Black pop culture know this. Remember the episode of Martin where Gina sung it. It's iconic. Again, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and just assume you're ignorant about this play and it's history.

It's clear Beyoncé does participate in the writing process of her songs however she often puts her foot in her mouth when speaking about it. I recall when Destiny's Child was on TRL and she said she wrote the song "Emotions" from the Survivor album. The song was a remake of The Bee Gees song and even the host looked at her crazy. Even in this video there were several contradictions in her statements about writing certain material. Let's also consider that some of these songwriting scandals are also tied to scandals with her stealing ideas and concepts for music videos (i.e. Countdown, Single Ladies, etc.) Her stans seem to think that just because Beyoncé does it and it becomes a hit that ethics don't matter.
Alan she is a talented singer and Dancer and a great overall live performer. However when it comes down to Arstiry and visuals even writing she gets alot of help. More then she would care to admit to.
@@joelprince4170 i feel like are never gonna know exactly how much or how little she contributes. People just make assumptions based on what they believe she is capable of, but they don't know. They believe what they want, whether it's that she writes more than anyone because they love her, or that she writes less than everyone because they hate her. We'll never know for sure though. As long as that's understood people can people whatever they want to.
I think this is why she’s not allowed to do interviews anymore. Her public speaking skills need some work, and the machine behind her can’t risk her exposing anything questionable.

This is literally just the tip of the ice berg with Beyonce taking credit for songs she didn't write. Two songwriters did an interview recently saying they wrote Bow Down for Rihanna and it ended up with Beyonce. Meanwhile Bey told us she wrote the song in an interview saying she "had a chant in her head" that day and came up with the concept and lyrics. She was sued for Survivor by the ACTUAL writers, settled out of court. Was sued for Baby Boy. Claimed to write Emotion (a cover by the bee gees) and Silent Night. That I'm Still Here song is the only song she has NO WRITING CREDITS on cause Diane Warren refused to be taken advantage of. And the list goes on and on...
I believe beyonce is trying to make up for what her father has done she definitely was her father's puppet. She's giving credit to alot of singers and song writers now.

A friend of mine did a live and did a demo. Of the lyric people subjected. So who ever words were added to the song ended up being a writer on the song. Which also give them a piece of the coin that would be made if the song is picked.
Writing music isn't easy. It's an art form. Beyonce is talented as a singer. No one can deny that. She's great as a dancer too. But as a songwriter? I dunno 🤷🏽♂️ none of us do. She helps composing harmonies and melodies which gets credited as song writing. For example she wrote the iconic "uh-oh" part and I think the chorus to crazy in love.

i vividly remember beyoncé stating that she wrote “if i were a boy” and that song (version sung by someone else) had been on RU-vid years prior to “IASF” being released. She also lied about “I’m Kissing You” that was on “B’Day” that had previously been released by des’ree.

I think Bey is more of a song arranger as apposed to a songwriter/lyricist/producer/instrumentalist. Really good at ad libs, making a song interesting with her creative & melodic runs, vocal arrangements, stacking and placing harmonies in certain places etc.
No she's not even that. Being an arranger takes even more musical and technical knowledge than being a songwriter. If she can't put 4 freaking chords and a simple melody together, she sure as shit can't build harmonies and orchestral arrangements. Her arrangers and producers (credited or uncredited) are just as numerous as her writers. Her being listed as co-arranger or co-producer is just as bogus as her songwriting claims, she extorts those based on her industry power and massive ego. I found her video to be okay until the last 10 minutes when she started to rant about how amazing Beyoncé is and how thankful we should be she includes the real songwriters instead of simply stealing all the credit to avoid controversy.
This is why I feel like Solange is the more organic artist. Like we can't deny the impact Beyonce has had in the entertainment industry, but her whole career has just been marred with all these controversies started out by Matthew (that she could've put an end to if she really wanted to). Stars like muni long (she created the songs hrs & hrs and time machine) talk in depth about how terribly writers are treated in the industry. Muni long is single handedly one of the most talented song writers in the game, she’s written for almost all of the biggest icons and biggest hits throughout the past 10+years, her real name is Priscilla.
Muni long is so talented that it bothered me that she wasn't given the same appeal as Beyoncé. And yet Priscilla, aka Muni, has an incredible pen womanship, and Muni has been around for years. This woman deserves her flowers for real. Here's to the REAL songwriters who deserve their roses. 🙌
EVERY single album she drops it’s always something with her taking writing credit. People don’t realize you may replace or add ONE word and getting writing credit. In all honesty that’s NOT being a true writer. Being able to pen a song from top to bottom is a true writer. She gets to slide because of who she is. And folks don’t go up against her bcuz her machine is WAY too powerful for that to happen.
This issue is not that Beyoncé collaborates, it the fact that she tends to name herself as the sole writer. Whitney and MJ NEVER said they were songwriters. In addition, she always said SHE wrote all of Destiny Child’s hits. Most songwriters CONTINUE to solely write their songs.

Whitney Houston gave Dolly Parton credit for “I will always love you”. And Dolly was well paid for that song. Dolly Is a prolific songwriter as well. Writing the musical score as well the lyrics, I don’t think that’s apples for apples. Beyoncé is definitely very talented but there’s some lines crossed with giving credit I think. I don’t think it’s all her however. It’s likely the management around her managing her image and wanting to add an additional layer to her artistry.
Whitney is a class act for giving Dolly the credit like it was due. And Dolly always said the record became Whitney’s for the changes in melody. They were very respectful of each others talents.

Homegirl knows what she's doing, and she absolutely is aware of the power she wields in proportion to her more hardcore fans, The Beyhive. She's not as vindictive as a certain other black woman artist with an equally massive fanbase that will shadily subtweet and like what her more aggressive fans will say and do to anyone who "dares besmerch her name", and thus, co-signing inappropriate and abusive behavior (again, if you know, you know!)... but Beyoncé knows she can say, or even not say, whatever she wants and The Beyhive will jump to her defense to protect her, and shout down the critics as "HATERZ" because Fandom Brainrot is real.

She probably meant that she composed the song as it has a different composition than the orignal song. yet again arranging melodies is credited as song writing.
So, the moral of the story is… if you decide to work with Beyoncé in any capacity music-wise, prepare for most of the credit and benefit to go to Beyoncé.

We don't have any actual details of how much she was writing both as a teen and throughout the years, Mariah wrote her first song in her teens and she continued writing her own songs, if someone is so exceptional at writing music why wouldn't they continue writing in their adulthood? And the other pattern is that she gets accused of trying to discredit people who wrote her songs and make herself anounced as the main writer (you know the saying "if you keep encountering a**holes maybe you are the a**hole"), if it keeps happening maybe it is true that she's not a writer (it's like trying to wipe true history type of way)

This has always been an issue with Beyoncé. I’m by no means a fan, but I respect her as a performer. But she’s got this pr machinery behind her that pushes her as a ‘great’ of this era and the lengths they go to… Taking credit for something you didn’t write is simply wrong. No way to justify that.
I can say this I think Beyoncé writes here and there but is she one of songwriters hell noooo she ain’t no Mariah Carey who has written 96% of her entire catalog
Period! Mariah is a song writer that’s one of the main reasons why she’s my ULTIMATE fave! I love Beyoncé too, I won’t downplay her success. They’re both great.

If he wrote the lyrics and not the melodies and harmonies, then she's a song writer as well. Otherwise, he didn't compose a song, but a poem. If both worked on it, both are songwriters.

Beyoncé had the perfect backup from Kelly and Michelle were content being in the back and would never challenge anything. they were happy to be in the group and that’s ok. They knew their place. Latoya and Latavia were the opposite.
Exactly, if you compare her to Mariah Carey you see the big difference. Just watch how they each sing the national anthem, and you'll see Mariah is on another level plus Mariah truly credited on 96% of her work.
We’re not saying she can’t write her own music. Of course she can. But changing a couple of words in a completely written lyric isn’t really songwriting, and it’s really unfair for the real songwriters to have to share their songwriting credits with you. It’s even sadder that when you speak up about this, the (delusional half of) beyhive will come for you and attack you for they can’t accept something less than for their queen.
Give credit where credit is due. Matthew and B have a history of issues with intellectual property (and not only with songwriting)of others. In my opinion in regard to some of the work , they have a tendency to forget they there’s people who have been (and some still are) here before her. It’s one thing to for her to add her 2 cents to a songs but she shouldn’t make it seem as if it she created the entire concept. Definitely disrespectful to the people who are the true creators and put in the hard work.
i would respect Beyoncé a lot more if she didn't lie and front so damned much. i was a Beyoncé stan from 2001 to 2009, ages 17-25. A lot of controversy and shady business had chipped away at my fandom until there was nothing left. i just can't rock with her or Jay-Z anymore and it's heartbreaking because, for YEARS, i had so much fun celebrating their love and success as young Black people. They were so inspiring to me. i kinda feel like i wasted my youth on them.
Give yourself grace - you only knew what you knew back then. It’s okay that you were inspired by what you saw and heard. Maybe it was just what you needed at the time. It would be sad if finding out more as you got older tainted your memories of your youth. ❤️

You werent a fan in the first place if you think she lied about any aspect of her career. Arranging melodies is credited as song writing and she can actually write which is why she is credited on a lot of her hits. Yeah that always made her music seem really unrelatable. Like it was really funny having an at the time happily married woman singing Irreplaceable, Single Ladies, and Best Thing I Never Had. Especially because the Jay Z cheating scandal happened right after and she stayed with him. It became very clear that what she said in her music and what she actually lived was different. She's a great singer and entertainer, but a lot of it feels impersonal.
I wonder if Latavia and Latoya had a choice of contributing as much as Beyonce, b/c that whole interview reminds me of the Nicole Scherzinger situation w/ the PCD.
No opportunity. Matthew and Tina made it clear to collaborators that ONLY Beyoncé was to write and produce. That’s why Beyoncé did it and felt pressure to do it. Read the voice teachers book.
But she always say she never wrote by it herself. In her interview & speeches, she called each writers name & explained how her & the writers work together

I think as long as she takes part in the creative/writing process of making her music, it’s totally fine to collaborate with writers. Working with writers doesn’t make her any less talented. As long as she credits them!
I found this video to be HEAVILY BIASED IN *FAVOR* of Beyoncé, and I say this as a Hive. The ending was very PATRONIZING as well, telling us we don't know how copyright law works. Sure, if she uses samples she has to give credit to the songwriters, but why doesn't she need to use SO MANY samples? Furthermore, it is disgusting you're suggesting we ought to be thankful she included all the songwriters she's compelled by law to include.

Music composing is just too slow and takes too much effort for modern pop. This is especially true when the song will be forgotten in less than a year.

His songwriting is clear and proven and if he does have other writers they are generally formed to how he would write or compose something. For me when you’re a singer writing is just a bonus. I honestly care more about if you can actually sing and make a song sound good/great. But I definitely think credit should be given. Bey shouldn’t be walking around making it seem like she solely writes songs, but I feel as though she’s learned which is why so many people are credited in her work now. She’s talented and the fact that she has been in the business for 20+ years and still puts out hits proves she is a legend.
I think this entire conversation can be boiled down to "this is what people think real artistry and the artistic process is", contrasted with what actual artristry looks like. It's irritating to me, as someone who writes music, that people try to diminish the artistry of a Beyonce. I'm so happy that you brought up interpretation because that, by itself, is an artform. It is the reason why musicality is something we judge singers on. How well can you take this piece of music and make it your own?! Also, some folks seem to be under the impression that whenever an artist has a song that is written by other folks, the people who wrote the song are the ones who have the final say on what the final product sounds like. And that's not it. Ne-Yo said it himself; you will have singers who take a song and rearrange the shit out of it. It was a joke among K-Pop fans who like Kai (from EXO) that his last song, Peaches, had 19 revisions. I respect the hell out of a singer who can't write for shit going out and finding a writer/producer to bring their ideas to life.
What is there to respect..it’s common sense not a respect thing. If you’re a singer and you form a band and you need a guitar player because you don’t play a instrument. So you get a guitar player that’s common sense has nothing to do with respect. You have a need to be filled so you filled it.
So i personally believe that it depends. Some singers are interpreters, some just can't interpret anyone's emotions but their own. It's all about skills and the skills requiere for one isn't necessary something you can do for the others. In case of Beyonce, she can do both and seems to use that ability plenty.
