Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been in development for over 15 years now. Going through several restarts, the most recent of which happened just a few years back. Despite all this, Ubisoft has re-committed to not giving up on the game.
I’ve beat Beyond Good & Evil more times than I can count, I found many different other ways to escape the map, many different ways to pass certain parts of the game without pearl purchases, now I can’t wait to do it with the prequel. I’ve been playing it since 2009, my 2nd PS2 game I played and man it’s still one of my favourite games! It probably won’t be another few years or a decade, but my love towards the game I shall continue to wait.
Here's hoping it keeps with the spirit of what they showed in that 2018 demo. That's a big sense of scale they offered there. The vehicle combat looked enjoyable, the transition from your ship to your fighter looked smooth and without any unnecessary flare, the city they showed off - and the fact that you could see it from space - were pretty awesome. It has the capacity to do a scaled down version of what Star Citizen was aiming for, but for a focused SP narrative, and I'm about that.
Yeah as a massive fan of the first one, they can’t really call this a spiritual successor as it has completely changed its identity. In the original stealth was a big factor, with combat only there for big set pieces. There were areas to explore, sure, not many but what was available had detail and charm. I have no doubt that if this has half of what Ubisoft promises, it will be an amazing game. Just won’t be a good beyond good and evil.
Its in the same universe, of course, but yeah it isn't going to be what most would expect solely upon hearing "beyond good and evil 2" Its essentially a different game using that skin/IP to sell the new idea. As long as it's good and the characters/story are done well... Everything should be fine.
@@100gecsrbetterthangod5 nah the first one hinted at a direct sequel. Ubisoft’s new pirate Ip is literally the no pun intended, barebones of what they want this second beyond good and evil to be. That’s fine. Just don’t call it beyond good and evil.
@@UpholdBlindfold Strongly agree with this, because that cliffhanger hurts and I can't still understand by now WHY the restart of some reboots had to change the core idea of what the first one is and was.
Just wish they would get Ansel back and just finish the original trilogy first before wasting any more time on this. They were actually asking people who had never played the original game, what they wanted to see in it!
As much as people dog it, I'm glad to hear it's still in the works because it's by far the most ambitious game from a AAA developer right now, so, I'm fine to wait and hope they surprise everyone. Also, Ubisoft is making a Star Wars action RPG as well. I'm hoping they use all the tech from this game for that Star Wars open world game as well. Just imagine the possibilities. A STAR WARS rpg using this sort of tech could make Ubisoft more money than anything they've ever made before.
Ubisoft and surprise? nice joke. you gave me good laughs. Star Wars didn't bring EA more money than anything they ever made. just cause Ubisoft will make a Star Wars game means nothing.
A star wars RPG with the same concept and design as what Beyond good and evil 2 have been said to have would be insane. Especially if you can choose tracks like in SWTOR (ie Force Wielder, Smuggler, soldier, etc) and they let characters choose their alignment and make choices again. That said the game won’t bring in more money than ever unless they went freemium live service and mobile, which ew to both of those. The game could easily be more popular than any modern Ubisoft title and bring them some MUCH needed recognition and respect to their reputation.
By the time it's 'done' the only people that would have played the first game when it was new will be 40 year olds. I'm really glad they came out and clearly said they're still working on it and I hope it's the same as the first gameplay footage. I'd rather see it in Steam early access at this point
Really sad that we're seeing ANOTHER example of scattered leadership and lack of vision that, if this game does end up releasing, will lead to it being kinda bad. At least strong leadership and intuitive vision can be utilized to turn bad to mid ideas and make them appropriate and amazing in the end! But when the game has no direction or endpoint or goal, it just gets shuffled around for years. Just keeps happening...
@@KavalanSol Not sure I understand your point here. I'm not allowed to agree and reinforce what's being sad? The game industry is terrible. It's being led by all the wrong people. What's wrong with adding voice to that?
@@ajwyrick2046 Really?! 😲 That's great news! I just googled and found a tweet of the ESRB rating for a 20th anniversary edition! I'm also still hoping for the sequel to become reality. 🤞
Can't wait for the first game to take a century to develop that still launches in a state similar to last-gen console Cyberpunk or launch version No Man's Sky.
Want to point out that the original BG&E was essentially a Zelda-type game with strong characters and personalities, I can't emphasize enough how badly of a departure the 2018 showcase felt to any fans of the original game. It may has well have been made with a completely unconnected title. Not that it matters since I'm going on the record believing this game will *never* release. As many familiar with the industry noted at the time, it was massively overscoped, it's completely unfeasible for it to ever release in the state that was promised at that time. Maybe some different iteration of the game will release under the BG&E2 name, but personally as a fan of the original even I don't care and don't want to see it. The original game was special for many different reasons, and all of them have apparently been forgotten at Ubisoft.
This game can be well considered as a reboot, since the first idea of BGE was a open world game really big, but they had to cut that idea out since the limitations of the time. But still, the first game will always be at my heart and at my top 10 best games.
@@GDcelta Nah investigation and stealth were key factors and some sort of narrative. Like I said in another comment yeah there were places to explore but they each had its own charm and personality. From the 2017 footage it looks like a generic Ubisoft title
From the deep diving I've done on the dev of the first game, Michel Ancel et al obviously never achieved the massive open-world aim he wanted for BG&E, cut it down to whatever satisficed Ubisoft at the time and then the product, though not matching his vision, became a cult classic and was now using that popularity to (hopefully) actually make what he first wanted to as the sequel. Unfortunately, that original vision doesn't gel well with what we cherish from BG&E1 so unless most of the sequel devs are deep fans of the first game, there won't be any faithfulness in the world or story. Just another empty forgetful Ubisoft open-world.
@@danielpridemore3997 quick correction: they actually cut the original game due to hsrdware limitations. Honestly, while im not super exited for this game since its in a clear and deep development hell, i sure hope its not another soulless glitch mess when it launches like cyberpunk (even tho that still have soul)
@@danielpridemore3997 Given that Ancel left the project in 2020 and retired from game dev in general, does what he envisioned for the game even matter that much anymore?
I have been waiting for beyond good and evil 2 for years and want to know what happens to Jade and Payge! I love that we are getting a game in general but I want a storyline that is going to blow my mind.
My Conspiracy Theory is that they recycled the engine and used new assets to create that new Star Wars Outlaws game they announced instead. The Motorcycle she uses and even the way she looks is........just, way too obviously similar.
And personally I just wanted a squeal with similar scope as the first game... It really doesn't have to be more than that, They don't need to push impossible boundaries to make a good game. The risk right now is that it will develop into another ubisoft "open world formula" which is generally more tedious than it is fun and interesting.
I am sure looking forward to this game coming out as it's been quite the wait, but believe it will be released. Plus, I was one of the music composers for the new game. Let's hope we are not waiting too long now.
I think it's very ambitious project that I've been following since I was like 12/13? I'm 25 now and still as eager to see the results. I'm actually glad if they restarted, although I really loved the design of Ganesha City. Why? Because co-op is not BG&E. I don't know where they went with that. I hope this will straighten the story because I feel like they were going everywhere, lost in the idea of creating their own Ubiverse which was system 3. It's a good idea, but this idea of having a planet facing the one side of the planet to protect one part from the meteorites was clearly a cover up for the monstrous quantity of work required to fill these planets with life. All that in a open world. This would take at least another 10 years to complete the whole solar system. For what ultimately? Hours of roaming? Whacky side quests? I'm sure this is not needed to complete the whole story. Now if they stuck to this idea 15 years ago, things would be different and polished. Maybe they changed the whole story, wouldn't be surprised. Happened with Final Fantasy XV, happend with Tomb Raider 2013. Maybe they changed the whole gameplay, which wasn't fit to the city. Perhaps this is just too much for the small Montpellier studio to handle. They are not Ubi Montreal, I can understand. We need another Jade. We need to be the main protagonist of this game and dive into the BG&E universe. They need to cut it with the over customization of experience. A good amount of choices are welcome but don't need the cyberpunk sims. We want BG&E2. COME ONNNNNN
It is very dangerous to build a game for a long time because eventually people whose money is in this project can demand cancellation in order to make money from other and newer projects.
I remember the first game being the only game I've ever played with a fully Dutch voice cast. The steam version doesn't even have this option so it was a very special and unique experience.
In Beyond Good & Evil 2 you can see alot of gameplay elements from Starlink: Battle of Atlas or maybe is the vice versa. Like the way the open world works, and the flighting, maybe Starlink was a sneak peak of what Beyond Good & Evil 2 would be.
The first BG&E is one of my favourite games of all time, I hope whatever they release isn't just a graphical master piece as I really enjoyed the story of the first one. I wonder if Jade is in this one
Remember when Ubisoft had people who put out creative games with fun ideas & imaginative settings like Rayman 1-3 & BG&E 1? Yeah those where ancient times, eh?
There's also the OTHER ambitious open world game created by Michel Ancel - Wild. A game set in neolithic Europe where you can play as not just humans but any animal. It's not officially cancelled but hasn't been heard from since 2015(!).
Wild is my most anticipated game ever. From the first day it was announced I am hyped. The thing is that the game was developed by Michel ancel and with his retirement the game went into development hell and no one really knows if wildsheep studio is still making it. There is a strong rumor that it is canceled but who knows...
I can remember one of the first demos of this game showcased a new technology (tessellation) that would change the game industry forever... and this game was leading said technology
As much as i'd like to see Beyond Good & Evil 2, im just not sure i actually want what they've shown thus far. I mean i like the first game because it was not a massive open world, it had it's areas to expore then move on with the story. it had it's art style, but now they go with the hyper realistic? I sure would have been pleased with them making a similar game and put more effort into just continue the story and rack in some money, and not all of the money.
Sad to think how ambitious the game was at the time it was announced/revealed and how many other similar games have been or are set to be released before it, thus saturating the market. Don't get me wrong, I am happy the devs are still moving forward with it and I will definitely pick it up upon its release but I imagine the nostalgic nature of the story will likely be the selling point for me.
Cant wait to see how many map markers they can fit in and all the outfits in the store I can buy. Add homogenised by the numbers gear progression and we will have a winner.
I want For Honor 2 ...been playing for honor on and off since beta ..the game is on an iron lung in hospice and it's fan base keeps going bed side to convince the game it will get better and survive while it is being drip fed content....it's a truly unique game and there is no arena fighter like it...I wish it would get a true sequel
Ubisoft: "We've just spent a bunch of money on Quarts, aka NFT's and that didn't work out at all. We've spent the majority of our investment money into it and thus are left with nothing. As such leadership is letting you all know that you gotta tighten the belt and meet them damn timelines!" Also Ubisoft: "We expect you to work 27 hours a day by the way"
I don't know where you get the idea from that a little blockchain experiment would cost "the majority" of anything^^ A project like Quarts has maybe a dozen or two dozen employees spending their time on it for a couple months while a project like BGE2 and SnB has 300-400 people working on it for a decade.. this is where money is lost not that little blockchain adventure.
The platform and graphics technology will exponentially progress so I hope the game will catch up (it's been 15 years!). I think the ambitious scale of this requires a cloud service to access the terabyte server lol. Like a single player "MMO" to play the massive world haha
Having worked in the industry, I know well enough that you are right about the memo from Ubisoft's boss. He is basically asking for the developers to live and work half their lives at the studio for the foreseeable future. It means no new hires, so suck it up. I was in this situation before, and it wrecked my health. No job or game is worth that. Based on what I know now, if I was working there, I would see it as a big red flag and would consider options of working somewhere else. This scenario is typically easier for high-level talent, who are more likely to have places to go if they want to jump ship. But the low-level grunts are more likely to have to stick it out. I wonder what incentives the company is using to prevent hemorrhaging of talent.
I remember in like 2009-2010 hearing about a new Ubisoft game I was stoked. Fast forward to today I honestly don’t even know what they’re working on (Assasins Creed 37 I assume?)and I couldn’t care less.
With the number of reboots it sounds like theyve already made beyond good and evil 2, bgae 3, and now theyre working on the 4rth one. We just werent allowed to play 2 and 3 but maybe thats a good thing.
The no loading screen is their excuse for laziness. Can't release it until we figure out how to do it all without load screens. At this point nobody cares about load screens
You should do a video on Little Devil Inside. I backed it back in 2016, then the devs signed a deal with Playstation in 2019ish and haven't heard anything from them since 2020.
As long as BGE2 still in development and maybe releasing in the future could help stabilize the stock price. Once it releases it has to actually bring in the money or Ubisofts value will just deteriorate further. Good chance that Ubisoft won't be around anymore in 10 years.
It'll come back as a live service online multiplayer game. Maybe a battle royale. Where your character says stuff like "No big deal, I'm just driving a FREAKING SPACESHIP"
Also, you dont give people money, you dont have good product. Like its so nice putting unachievable demands and then do the "unplanned" layoffs. I think those layoffs were planned and this is just a circus to distract us from unfair practices in Ubisoft
Man.. Beyond good and evil 2 is just going to be a nice experince and a starting off point for when developers leave and work on a different project. I dont see that game releasing at all. Thats the kind a game that sinks a company to the brink and than saves or ends a company.. Its the last push. But they started doing that while they were sinking thers nothing left to push with.
I have no particular attachment to ubisoft, but it still is a shame to witness the company falling off the deep end before our eyes. we know they're capable of doing amazing things in their games, but they just haven't been. really sucks to see
I've also heard that Michel ancel creator of Rayman who was head of this project has stepped down? So it's going through another reboot? I dunno though.. Maybe it was just rumors.
Really hope the game comes out good and has what they promised, I don’t think fully detailed planets are too much to ask, if the game sticks to one solar system I don’t think it’s too much to design 6 maybe 7 planets
the version from 2017 doesnt feel anything like BGE to me, it felt more like a complete reimaginen / reboot of the entire francise than a proper sequel. also it was just a playable tech demo back then, nothing more. I really dont want to ahve a sequel like this with probably a lot of the usual ubisoft forumla in it
On a side note, ubisofts description of their open world Star Wars games falls very much in line with what has been show so far with this game. Wonder if it’s going to be run on the same engine.
It really sounded too good to be true and its no wonder it still isn't anywhere close to being done. They have to keep starting over because they keep missing out on an entire generation of gaming consoles. If they released a completed version of the original build it would probably be great for the PS3/360 but not for this cycle of hardware.
I feel like Ubisoft is a company that fears embracing new ideas. So the make new ideas and the chain the to tired old ones. For instance, Assassin's Creed. Through Unity the games were great. But can you imagine a historical open world game based on Ancient Egypt that didn't randomly include pirate ship mechanics and was just its own thing? A game based on Sparta fighting Athens/Persia without the weird mythology? An actual open world Viking game based on the Danish invasion of the Saxons without this weird, forced assassin story?
Yup you hit the nail on the head. Also adding in unnecessary things to appeal to a loud vocal minority only further diminishes the quality of their titles. You're right that Ubisoft basically stopped being good after AC: Unity.
That product pitch is ridiculously large scale and hard to execute, and I would love every moment of it. Too bad that Ubisoft will most likely never realize it Starfield anyone? 🤣
This game literally sounds like starfield which will be better than this anyways, they should just scrap it and make a game like beyond good and evil 1
