Two-time Hall of Fame basketball coach Doug Schakel, skill development coach for the 2015 NJCAA Div. II National Champions, uses floor demonstrations and white board diagrams to teach the "Triangle Zone Offense: 5 Player Shuffle Option."
Coach Schakel used the 5 Player Shuffle Option in combination with Triangle Offense options to guide his Crowley County High School teams to three straight state tournament appearances culminating in a 24-0 Colorado State Basketball Championship.
The 5 Player Shuffle Option is especially effective when you don't have a true post player on your team. He also shows a 4 Player Shuffle Option to use if you have just one post player.

Great Video and explanation Coach...thanks for taking the time to bring us insight to a definite tried and true offense from yesteryear. In high school, my team ran the 5 man continuity shuffle and 4 man continuity shuffle with a single defined post in the mid 70's, and one of the tweaks we used for an overly aggressive man team was the point (1) to iso-wing (2) backdoor pass. By teaching the triangle wing (3) to creep and not over cut off the post until the pass was passed to 2, we were able to create some backdoor layups. We also had some other entry variations just as you have previously given in other videos. As the 80's approached, Coach, it seemed to me, the Shuffle was replaced by the Flex and the motion offenses espoused by Coach Knight and others. For you young coaches out there especially, even some of us veterans too, I just wanted to express how fortunate and thankful we should be that a Master Teacher is giving you/us such a wealth of knowledge for free. I remember Coach Don Meyer always saying that you need to learn it all but know that you cannot use everything. While the new offenses of today differ from those of yesteryear, especially due to the emphasis of the three point line, we can still borrow snippets (yes, even the whole system) of the tried and true to incorporate. Thanks again, Coach...Kenny E. Williams Take care, Kenny E. Williams

What situations are you going to want to use the Triangle as opposed to the Shuffle? I can only see one real difference in it. When the ball is changing sides of the court, the person at the top of the key fills the weak side wing rather than basket cutting. This allows the bottom of the triangle to be a second cutter. Is this simply a matter of if there are two good posts its best if they work north and south and if there is only one shuffle works better?

Andrew- You are pretty much spot on with your observation. Primarily, the Shuffle would be used if we only had one (or zero) legitimate post player. As I mention in the video, all 5 players will play in the Post spot 1/5th of the time in the basic 5 man Shuffle.

In Phil Jackson's Triangle (2-Guard Front), that would be the Shooting Guard or Small Forward at the Top of Key.
