Bible Review: Thompson Chain Reference KJV from CBP - Watch to the end...

A much anticipated review for me! I purchased this TCR from Church Bible Publishers in the States. It’s a Kirkbride text block but a CBP binding in ironed calfskin which I really like. Unfortunately my bad run with Kirkbride Bibles continues, as my edit at the end of the video shows. My copy had printing smudges down several pages!!! Not a CBP issue of course but this copy is unsellable thanks to another sub-standard Kirkbride block, and it will cost too much to return... how frustrating 😢
Please note I bought these Bibles with my own money, so my thoughts and reviews are completely impartial. This is now the third TCR I have purchased recently and all have had major issues, and just haven’t been good enough. Even this one still had too much show through in the red letter sections in my printing errors just capped it off.
I’ve been told the large print and handy size might be better but I’m not sure if I can go on another roller coaster ride trying to find a TCR that I like and that’s worthy of Burton Bibles patronage! No one seems to be able to find out or give me details regarding the paper spec of each edition, which would help me avoid these disappointing printings. To date the best 5th Edition Thompson I’ve owned was printed by Cambridge in Great Britain. I wish Kirkbride would outsource the printing of their Bibles to someone like Jongbloed, that would be awesome.
Please leave your comments and helpful advice for me below! I’m pulling my hair out!

Sadly those issues are why Zondervan was able to buy Kirkbride and the TCR. I have used Thompson Chains for almost 30 years and my favorite copies were printed by World in the 1990s. During that time World was printing the KJV TCRs while Kirkbride was working on new bible versions. In at least the last 10 years, every Kirkbide copy I saw had those issues.

Oh my, this is so sad, 😢 I’ve really been following you on your path to find a good TC I can’t believe the problems you are having Brother, I will stay tuned to see if they resolve it for you! I do pray your next ones will be Better. 🙏Thank you so much on your honest review, Brother, I think I will just wait before I order one. 🙏✝️📖

The KJV TCR that I purchased around a year ago has serious flaws, but no smudges. Those smudges are serious flaws and, in my opinion, they make the Bible unacceptable. I'm not a TCR hater -- like you, I love the design.

Thank you for your insight brother it is of some small comfort to know it’s not just me! I have been refunded and will get a handy size and large print. I think the printing is really hit and miss with these std size TCR’s

I just got a reply from CBP yesterday...it's still the same print date: May 2018, on the Midsize TCR. Of course, it's from KIRKBRIDE. looks like I'll be getting the Handy size, I love the TC but i just don't like a 6 point font. I really like the very honest review. I really hope Kirkbride gives attention to their printing issues. God bless.

I have the TCR from before CBP and LCBP split. It says "Church" on the spine. It is by far my favorite Bible and has none of the issues in your review. The only conclusion I can come to is that Kirkbride has wildly inconsistent quality control and I got a good one.

Thompson has been my most cherished but kirkbride must have given up quality control. I have a '57 and it was perfect. Over the years the quality has diminished but I keep buying TCR hoping to find another perfect.

Hey Mark, that is not normal my Large print from the KJV Store in Texas does not have that issue.

I have the CBP wide-margin TCR and the print is good. I did notice that the block is slightly smaller and this causes the borders to be smaller than the original Kirkbride wide-margin.

I have the CBP large-print with Ironed Calf Skin. The blocks came from Kirkbride and CBP did the binding. Later on I purchased from CBP a large print with a blemish (barely noticed) on the back cover, and it was supposed to be sent to the KJV store as CBP does some of their covers with their label "KJV Store." The print quality is good (8+ our of 10), and the same issues with the red-print, not consistent.

What is probably the case here is quite probably a lack of quality control on Kirkbride's part. According to this video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LPa9o6ZIG9s.html) Church Bible Publishers get their printed Bible blocks from elsewhere, so it's very likely Kirkbride printed and bound them enmasse before shipping them to CBP. In my example, I bought a CBP midsize Thompson that was printed and bound in 2020; the page beginning Timothy as shown in your video above is crisp and clean, and the way it should be; however, a signature containing a section of the Psalms was misplaced within the Bible prior to binding. Psalm 136 doesn't end before Psalm 19 begins, as it were. So, my theory here is that Kirkbride had a number of TCRs which had minor problems that they still wanted to make money off them, so they palmed them off to CBP. Incidentally, I still have and use my particular TCR, which I call "the defect Bible", as it does remind me of my own defects.

Hello Mark. Just finished watching your review. I also use the Thompson chain reference, it would be the one I use most. I had a look at it there, and it is a Kirkbride, 26th printing in 2009, in the States. I bought it locally (N. Ireland) in 2013, and I have never had an issue with it. I bought my daughter one also, from Ritchie Christian Media a couple of years ago, but I can't examine it because she's in bed! I'll have a look at it tomorrow. I don't know what the answer is! Hope you eventually get the problem resolved. Take care brother, and God bless.

Thanks for the comment Kevin, yes I’ve had three std size Thompson’s (one from Ritchies actually!) and the best one was this latest one from CBP (smudges notwithstanding). Seems like they are very hit and miss with consistency. I love the Thompson but so far have failed to find a nice one! I’m ordering a handy size and a large print as I’ve been told they have the best paper and print combo. God bless

sorry to hear about the problems you are having with finding a decent edition of the Thompson's.... over all i am satisfied with my own copy of the Thompson which i ordered through Amazon nearly 10 years ago... it is the large size large print from Kirkbride, genuine leather... the print is ok, does not have any big issues with "ghosting" ... and a few instances of variance between dark vs light print quality, both of black and red letter, but not too much in my opinion, the leather binding is a little stiff and hard but not very bad , at least for my taste... i can live with it... but it could have been better... it seems that the over-all quality is varying when it comes to Kirkbride bindings/printings...
@BurtonBibles

Yes agreed! I have been led to believe that the paper is better in the LP which overall improves the main issues I have with it. I will order one in and see what I think! God bless

Just a wee update, Mark. Checked my daughter's Thompson, and it is good. Very little ghosting, and the red letter is grand. It is a Kirkbride, printed in the States, 33rd printing, 2014. Hope this is a help. Take care. God bless.
@BurtonBibles
@BurtonBibles 5 лет назад
Thanks Kevin, this is the problem, the quality seems to be all over the place! Have a look back through my past videos and you will see my ‘green’ TCR review from Ritchies. The ghosting was terrible and the paper shine was horrendous! I think this one was from 2010 printing. You just can’t rely on them so as a retailer it’s a nightmare! So glad you have a good one as it’s a superb Bible, I just wish Jongbloed printed it 😀 God bless

Wow! I don't know what's going on. All the KJV Thompson Chain Bibles I've had were so nice. I will say the hand size had the best paper and print. It seems like you just got a series of bad copies. I don't know what to tell you brother, other than now you see the flaws, it will be easier to write notes and use it as a work horse Bible. May the Lord richly bless, Brian

Thanks Brian, this is my third std size and so I think I’m going to avoid this size. Such a shame it cost so much to get here only to be disappointed by another poor Kirkbride block. Thanks and God bless.

I have a Thompson KJV Handy Size in Morrocan leather and the paper and binding are very good. Aside from the pinkish red letter text that plagues all Kirkbride Bibles, it's a great Bible.

I love TCRs too, but if they outsourced to somebody like Jongbloed you could probably expect to be paying $200 for one instead of paying about a third of that as is possible now... or even a quarter of that. Oh, but I will add that I too was very dissatisfied with my last Kirkbride purchase, not for the print quality but for the low quality feel and look of the cover which was advertised as genuine leather. It looked, felt and handled like bonded leather but it was listed as genuine leather on cbd.com and that is indeed what the box said. I had to have it rebound.

Yeah, kirkbride has really gone down hill. These Tcr Bible's from Cbp are a lot nicer. My first Thompson was almost 30 years ago, and they were so much better than the ones today. I pretty much stick with the Tbs Westminster these days. Thanks for sharing 😁

God bless bro. Yeah CBP def the best shout, although the text block is still Kirkbride and I’ve seen alignment and quality issues still. Large print version seems to be the best block. Westminster has no such issues 😎👍👌

Thompson Chains are so unpredictable , I'm done buying them unless they get the NASB back. I've given so many away and now only have one CBP three piece and my 1964 edition. The old one is black print only and just over an inch thick and yet hardly any ghosting. Bottom line Kirkbride has really got to update the KJV, the ESV edition is line matched and its WAY better. I was told that updating the good old KJV is to expensive because there is no publisher to fork over the money needed to do so😞 The only way to get a good KJV Thompson is for Kirkbride to use a better grade of India paper. This CBP edition is a bit thicker now upping the gsm, honestly its not thicker paper that's needed its the opacity. My Allan Clerandon is super thin like tissue paper thin yet its hardly got any ghosting and its India paper....Its so strange .
@BurtonBibles
@BurtonBibles 5 лет назад
Thank you brother! I am so glad I’m not alone. Every review I’ve seen seems to be so overly positive but the truth is when I sit the Kirkbride TCR next to a Cambridge or TBS or Crossway, it sucks. Paper opacity, print quality, the terrible red letter, no line matching, terrible ‘genuine leather covers’ (on the one I had anyway) so I just had to be honest with my review. With so many top quality Bibles being produced by smaller publishers, it should be embarrassing for Kirkbride! They need to look around and smell the coffee! God bless

It’s just a complete shameful disgrace that a beloved treasure such as the Thompson chain Bible has been so mishandled and taken for granted by the people in trusted with its legacy!!! Disgraceful!!! If Kirkbride has no more regard for this truly remarkable treasure chest of biblical knowledge then this, they should pass it off to someone capable and willing to give this incredible bible it’s just due and begin producing versions that live up to the formidable legacy of the Thompson chain reference bible once again! Absolutely disgraceful. Shame on you Kirkbride!

Kirkbride book block quality has been degrading for the last 20 years, kirkbride don't care about quality anymore, everything is for Mass production at minimal cost, it is a pity because the TCR is a very good system.
