this literally just happend to me. so i got my sportbike fallen in front my house at freaking 3 in the morning in my country so i did not want to woke anybody to help me pick up my bike and well, lets face the fact its kinda embarrassing when you fell your bike and it was my first time. so ive been trying to pick it up by myself ive try so many ways including tried to jack it up with a car jack. not working.. almost an hour i had been trying but all my effort such a waste. i almost cry alone outside my house at 4am then i just gave up and thought to search on how to pick up a big bike on youtube which i think a stupid move to do. so i came across this video and well, it works.. i picked up my bike. this video safe my life. thanks.. tldr; awesome video really helpful

I'm 78 and talk about embarrassment, after not riding for 35 years just bought a RE 650 interceptor . Only has it 4 days and dropped it next to the pumps at a busy servo. The 478 Lb bike pushed, then pinned my shins against the pumps.No no hope of lifting even if I could. I had a young bloke come over to help me get the bike up. Then about 6 weeks later after taking it for its first good highway ride after running in, came home, pulled up in the driveway and this time never pushed the side down fully, and down it went. I found a neighbor who was mowing I didn't know though to help me get it up . I had been out 65km at a lonely bush location with no one around for miles and on my own. I would have been in a lot of strife if I had done that out there.

Excellent advice! Worked on a 2006 Suzuki Katana. Unlike other vids on this topic, Clinton gives a practical, real world presentation with the bike in neutral, shifter side down on a downgrade. How things actually happen when you're riding, not the canned presentation you see in vids from biker shows. Thanks!

when the bike started rolling, you had your right hand below your left hand, that's why you couldn't free it, right? at honda safety training we were told to always grab the end of handlebar first with left hand, and then put the right palm on left hand, so we can quickly free it, and reach over the handlebar for the brake!!! :) By the way, excellent videos, very nice explaining!

Thanks Clinton. Great tips. A little late for me. Dropped my F800GS (identical to the bike in your video) at a traffic light. Looked around to see who saw me, picked the bike up with it running and in neutral. It proceeded to role from the left lane to the right lane of a two lane street in front of cars that were waiting at the light. A guy jumped out to help me get it under control. I said thanks then jumped on and left without checking the bike out. Luckily no issues except for a torn passenger peg rubber. So, ALL your tips were spot on and I will remember in the future...I hope.

Wish they'd taught us something like this when I took the new rider course at Harley Davidson. When one of us newbies tipped the bike over, they just told us to back away and did it themselves with the back lift technique. I wiped out yesterday on day 3 of solo riding and had to wait for someone to pull over and help bc I had no idea what to do.

Thanks Clinton, your videos helped me. I used this technique when I had a low speed crash with tires full of mud. Even though it was a light bike, it still helped me think through the process and pick it up in a controlled manner. Cheers!

Thanks for the great front brake tip. It would have saved me a bit of work from a steep uphill drop over loose rock and dirt last weekend. Dropped motorcycles seems to find neutral at the worst possible time. Another option, after the bike is turned off, is to reach around the bottom of the bike to shift into gear.

I like to carry those nylon cable straps and they work well in holding the brake lever tight to the hand grip on the bar as well as many other uses. I used a few to keep my auxiliary lights attached when the bolts holding them to the crash bars loosened and were lost. Replacement bolts were fastened with loctite.

Well, I recently dumped an F850 BMW Adventure. I was on a test ride with a demo. It was at a busy intersection. A ranch lady came along and stopped to give me a hand. Without her help, I'd still be there crying on the side of the road. Thanks for this great video. I'm surprised there isn't a jacking tool that could be used to get her upright. With German engineering being what it is, I would think it's a "no-brainer" and whoever gets a patent on it will be an instant millionaire.

Hi Clinton! Love your videos. Always clear and informative. Your assertion that FI bikes don't leak fuel when on their sides is simply not true. I have had several FI bikes on their sides that leaked fuel. The one that always comes to mind is my old Kawasaki Z750S. When that bike tipped over there was lots of fuel on the road. No tubes were dislodged, no broken pieces (except maybe a mirror).

A tip for securing the front brake is to use a bungee cord. I also use this technique when the bike is up on the center stand or parked on an incline so there's no chance of it moving.

I've already had to do this a couple times in the last few weeks. I have a small velcro strap wrapped around the bar, beside the brake reservoir. So easy to lock the front lever with it. It was a godsend on the 2nd drop.
@ronanrogers4127
@ronanrogers4127 6 лет назад
I think this is the best technique, notwithstanding the unintended brake error. I’ve always thought the technique where you put your back to the bike and use your legs is both harder, because of the lack of leverage, and much more clumsy as you can’t see what you’re doing.

Keep a "ball end" bungee loop with you to wrap the front brake lever. The elastic strength of this little piece of gear is useful in many ways and snubbing the front brake with one is most useful and easy.

4:24 and that is a PERFECT..way to bend your handle bars out of balanced ( prebent). You'll notice it as you're riding later in a straight on deal. I never recommend anyone lift this way. If you know those handle bars are built like a tank....*shrugs* then whatever..more power to ya..but most handle bars on most bikes these days are NOT solid tough=enough steel or aluminum to the point of you lifting like this won't bend them further.

Great front brake trick, it moved a lot, also, loved the ''gs trick'',.. and, I don't think a glove will hold a front brake enough to keep the front tire from moving. I can't get over how your carpet kept from scratching the bike. Give me a break bro. You should be riding a new gs bmw on the road, not gravel, if your concerned about scratches! The squat is the best method for pull up 250 kg all bikes. With a squat you use your whole body and your back is not loaded. This method is used in particular for Harley Davidson over 350 - 400 kg. Your medot is not correct, is for motorcycle down 160kg.
@ferrydewit3416

All the weight is on a few bolts that keeps the handle bar at place. A heavy bike hanging on a few bolts might damage them. I am not a fan of this method.
