He died tragically in a plane crash in 1959 with Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly....... That day was coined The Day The Music Died, and inspired the song American Pie by Don McLean.

@@CrunchyNapkins Tommy Allsup lost a coin toss and Valens took his place on the plane... Jennings Gave his seat up for The Bopper... Elvis Presley wasn't there and had nothing to do with it... Although his was very distraught when he heard about it... Elvis was in the army stationed in Germany at the time...

Big Bopper died in an airplane crash in Iowa with Buddy Holly and Richie Valens in the late 50s. Before my time but my mom loved this song

His name was J. P. Richardson. He's always mentioned third when people name the 3 that died in the plane crash. Country music legend Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane to the Big Bopper. Waylon jokingly said 'I hope your plane crashes' to Buddy Holly and it haunted him until he died. I grew up about 2 hours away from Clear Lake, IA...where they last performed. Once when I was in the Surf Ballroom looking around, they still have the phone Richie Valens used to call his manager that fateful night. Some lady got a little upset and said something like 'why didn't he (Richie) call his wife?'. It took some effort not to say 'he was only 17 and not married'. There's also a memorial at the crash site to this day out in a field north of Clear Lake. Over 60 years later and the Surf Ballroom still does a 'Winter Dance Party' tribute weekend every February.

Someone else who almost got on that plane, but didn’t, was Dion DiMucci, commonly known by just Dion. He thought it would have been ridiculous to spend that much money to fly.

The song touched both my mother and I. She was born and raised in Iowa and grew up 100 miles from the plane crash. She was pregnant with me when they died, just like the wives of Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. She loved this song. In my high school days Don McLean wrote American Pie about this tragedy and it became a song near and dear to my heart. 💔 It truly was the day that music died

Rip To The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly & Ritchie Valens who were gone too soon cuz of a plane accident back in the 1950's. The Big Bopper was an entertainer as u saw on this video. Ty, he had charisma n not too many singers have that on them. I wasn't even thought of when this happen but I would have luved to be in 1950 decades just to c how the music was being played n done. God Bless The Bopper, Buddy Holly & Ritchie Valens Families.

Dad was a huuuuuuuge fan of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens from the time he was a child. He introduced me to their music and shamelessly, all I have listened to of the 3 in these recent years is Buddy. Thanks for re-introducing me to this song.

The Big Bopper died along with Buddy Holly and Richie Valens in a plane crash in 1959. The Big Bopper aka Jiles Perry (J.P.) Richardson was 28 years old, Buddy Holly was 22 years old, and Richie Valens was 17 years old when they died in that plane crash.

And of course Waylon Jennings was playing in the band and gave up his seat on the plane to Buddy Holly. It was a great tragedy but perhaps would have been an even a greater tragedy if we had lost Waylon that night!

If Waylon Jennings hadn't given his seat on the plane Buddy Holly chartered the Big Bopper would have lived and Waylon would not have become famous. Waylon's greatest regret was when Buddy said "I hope you freeze your butt off on the bus." Waylon replied" hope your plan crashes." Waylon carried the weight of those being his last words to his friend to his grave.

@Modern Renaissance Man Thanks for finally getting to my song! Dang ball! Took it long enough!😁 I requested that a long time ago. As an MRMI, and "Blue Eyes", I'll be glad to tell you some more about me.... Believe it or not, I grew up on that song and ones even older than that. When I was little my mom had this huge cabinet stereo that played records, 8 track tapes and radio. One of my best Christmas presents from Santa was a blue record player in a case with a little storage thing built into it that would hold a few small (45's) records in it. I could play all the sizes of records with it. Chantilly lace was on one of my 45's. Even though I've had 4 strokes now, I STILL remember all the words to that song and it remains one of my favorites. I drove my sister absolutely crazy playing that record! 😂🤣 We had very little when I was growing up, shoot hamburger was like steak to us. I'm 45 now and it's one of my best memories. @modern Renaissance man I'll be 46 on May 5th this year do you think it would be possible for you to react to a song for an old MRMI? I'd love to see you react to what I consider the ultimate breakup song that I've used many times 😁😂😂 it's by Weird Al Yankovic it's called "One More Minute". If you can I'd be grateful. Thanks. Y'all have a good one and take care! ❤️

When I was around 7 or 8 years old we used to borrow some 45 rpm records from our next door neighbor, we didn't have any of our own and play them on our "hifi" record player, the big cabinet type that the older folks will understand what that is. Anyway, my dad would play this record and sing along with it because he liked the song. He had a slight resemblance to the Big Bopper. That's what this song reminds me of.

So many characters in the early days of Rock and Roll. This Rock and Roll, would change the world. Love "The Big Bopper." He was killed in the infamous plane crash in I think 1959, when Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper and Richie Valens were all huge Stars, and had just played a rock show in Kansas or Illinois (sorry not sure) and boarded a small plane in horrible weather to get to the next Midwest city for the next evenings show. The next day, the plane was found in a corn field and everyone, including the pilot were killed. Every newspaper and TV broadcast flashed the news across the entire country. Many movies and songs were made about this tragic and historical event. Don McClain's famous 1972 song "American Pie" was a tribute to these Giants of early Rock and Roll. "The day...the music ...died." those famous lyrics everyone over 50 yrs old know so well.

That was on American Bandstand! I was in high school! He died not long after this in plane crash with Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. Waylon Jennings and Buddy were good friends from West Texas and Waylon had just started playing bass in Buddy's band. The Big Bopper was really sick with flu and being a large man had a difficult time sleeping on the school bus they used for travel. Waylon said the weather was bitterly cold, -40 degrees, so he gave The Big Bopper his seat on the plane so he could get to a doctor on their next date.

Imagine, young white girls (and guys) back then weren't exposed to this kind of sound. This new music, while filled with innuendo also got closer to the explicitness that we were to experience in later decades. The guys in the video also liked the music, but were less expressive. You have to look more at facial expression, esp. the eyes. Big Bopper was one of the first to bring "race" (later to become rock and roll) music to the white audience. White youth at that time had been quite inhibited and were totally ready to embrace this new sound. This song came out a few years before I really appreciated music (I was born in '54 and rock and roll was first coming out); however, I have since learned to appreciate the roots of music. I once took a summer course at university studying the blues from negro spirituals moving into rhythm and blues to early rock. I love music and appreciate all genres, if the music is good. I have a hard time listening to B grade music unless it is from a genre that I really relate to. Anyway, thanks for doing these reactions. It gives a chance for people who love music to see how others respond to the music we like. Keep up the good work. I have seen several other reactors comment on your work and they really perk up when you are mentioned. Cheers
