And you guys/girls did a amazing job seriously! I'm obsessed with U.P. steam and honestly this dvd is one of the best films of Union Pacific's steam (turbines and diesels as well) that i've ever seen (and that's coming from someone who has every dvd on U.p steam from all three volumes of Last Of The Giants to Union Pacific Big Boy Collection and Big Boys and Challengers) Keep up the great work! t was nice of UP to save 8 of them. Most railroads wouldn't have saved one. there must have been a lot of scrap metal in those 8 locomotives, but UP didn't grab the quick buck. Instead, they saved a good amount of them. I've always admired UP for preservation of its historic equipment.

“Only 8”? That’s a pretty generous when compared to other American steam locomotives.

Seems like 4014 has more footage surviving from its service days than almost any other Big Boy I've seen (though 4012 and 4018 were photographed more). Last of The Giants also prominently featured 4002, yet another reason that film is now priceless.

We often overlook now that her excursion career has taken off, that 4014 was actually already a celebrity long before they even pulled her out of the Rail Giants Museum, I can't remember what the exact quote was, but one of the guys who was interviewed in Pentrex's Last Of The Giants series mentioned that 4014 was one of the engines that always seemed to be available whenever film crews were around... I believe the reason was she had been recently shopped in '56 or something so she was almost always on standby... If you pay close attention to numbers you'll notice there were a number of other big boys that also make recurring appearances, 4019 and 4023 immediately come to mind, I also noticed 4005 and 4002 pop up quite a bit in the Last of the Giants... This is largely just because the vast majority of the film we have on Big Boys happens to have been shot between 1955 and 1957 on Sherman Hill, so any locomotives regularly operating out of Cheyenne or Laramie would obviously be in a lot of film.

Also I think the clips in this video were specifically chosen to honor 4014, as this was uploaded at around the time that they started the restoration project.

Sadly, in 2020, Ed Dickens announced that Union Pacific 3985 was officially retired from service.
