Here is early Radio and Early TV Children's program host and star Big Brother Bob Emery who started on Radio in 1924 with his "Big Brother Club" broadcasts over WGI in Medford, and later WEEI in Boston. He later was one of TV's first Children show hosts on the old Dumont Network beginning in 1947, before joining WBZ TV in Boston in from 1951 until his retirement in 1968. Through all those years his Theme song remained "The Grass is Always Greener in the other Fellows Yard", heard here on this 1926 record.

Yes, I remember it well. We used to leave the neighborhood Elementary school around 11:45, take the short walk home to have lunch, and Big Brother would come on around 12:00 noon. While we had our lunch we would turn on Big Brother and He would sing his theme song, show a Cartoon or two, and then have the toast to the President, followed by his ending theme "So long small fry it's time to say goodbye." After that we walked back to school for the afternoon Session which began around 1:15 PM.

I lived near my grammar school and was able to go home for lunchtime....that allowed me to have my boloney sandwich and camp bell's tomato soup with Big Brother and to end my lunch with a salute to the President of the United States......which was Dwight Eisenhower at the time.....the "grass is Always Greener " song and it's meaning, has stuck with me to this very day....Bob Emery has had a great influence on me......

My mother told me that her younger brother, Richard William Silverman, used to sing on the show, would have been in the late 20s. He died at age 17 of cancer in 1936.

Ah toasting the president with a glass of milk while looking at a picture of Ike on the screen and listening to 'Hail to the Chief'. Watching a little Pow Wow the Indian Boy and Gumby, then Big Brother Bob would sing the green glasses song. I'd searched for this song for years...thank you for posting it.

While you drank your milk and looked at a picture of Dwight Eisenhower, Hail to the Chief played in the background. The length of that song was how long you had to finish your milk!

I don't remember Big Brother singing much on the TV show, but he always did The Grass is Always Greener" on the ukelele at the begining, and as I remember, usually at the end of the show. Thanks for this. I'm also remembering toasting with my milk to Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy. My brother Roger was once one of the many child guests Big Brother had on his show.

The "uke" was a common instrument in those days. Probably the most famous player was "Ukelele Ike," Cliff Edwards, who was one of the first "skat" singers, and certainly the first white guy to skat. He is most familiar to most as the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Walt Disney's Pinocchio where he sang "When You Wish Upon a Star." Big Brother was a staple in my Grandmothers house during Ike's administration, and, like most youngsters in the Boston area in those days, I looked forward to the "toast to the chief" at lunchtime, the toast being a glass of milk, poured from a glass milk bottle where the cream was a layer on the top.

I have a very vague memory of Bob's WBZ-TV afternoon show "Clubhouse 4"; the memory is circa 1963 or 1964. A legend in children's TV from the early days, and apparently he was a star on local radio way back when as well.

Does anyone recall the time when Big Brother Bob Emery thought he was not on the air and he said something like..."You little Bastards!" My uncle, who was an adult at the time, was watching watching this show on WBZ TV in the Boston, Massachusetts area at the time. He clearly remembered it happening at the end of one of the programs. Believe it or not, I have somewhere in my collection of stuff, a recording of all this on a record called, Famous Bloopers!

That was Uncle Don . Urban legend he was supposed to have said " that should hold the little bastards for another day . The true story is funnier and was his clown side kick that said it . Google it .

Don`t recall the year, But on WBZ - watching from my home in Dorchester - after-school TV was Big Brother and his peanut gallery. A kindly gentleman. Always surrounded by young kids who he `pandered` to as some great Uncle or whatever. These were B&W live camera days. One day I was watching when camera came on a bit early and there was Big Brother, surrounded by mobbing small kids. He was giving or taking some last minute chat with camera man or whomever, not realizing the camera was live.. This little tyke came over from behind and grabbed onto to Big Brother`s pant leg...`BIG BROTHER, BIG BROTHER`trying to get his attention. Big Brorther tried to shoo the kid away, but the kid held on, BIG BROTHER BIG BROTHER...and Big Brother turned around looked down at the little kid not at all kindly and and said `Get away from me, you little bastard.)` Somebody must have said something, `cause Big Brother looked and realized he was on live camera. (The screen went blank.) I recall it clearly, for bastard was not a kiddy`s word in Irish-Catholic Boston. Glorius `50`s they were.....Pinky Lee collapsing on live TV, Carmen Miranda collapsing on the Durante show., Senator McCarthy providing daily soap opera entertainment..sigh...all we have now is CNN and FOX.

Hello R. Davclm, thank you very much for recollecting that infamous broadcast. My uncle watched the show and told me al about it. One time Norm Nathan was on a radio talk show and I called up the show and asked him about this Bob Emery show and he said that it never happened. I knew that he was lying to protect Big Brothers' image.

the 'that oughta hold the little bastards off until tomorrow' remark was allegedly made by "Uncle Don" in New York City who was not the same person as Bob Emery. Emery passed away in l982.

There are many versions of this story most of whic can not be definitively verified. I've heard similar stories citing Bozo,Buffalo Bob( of Howdy Doody) Andy Devine, Soupy Sales, as well as a plethora of other children's show hosts.

Supposedly, according to on line Radio History, his so-called "Little Bastards" remark is an urban legend, rather then actual fact. I remember hearing about it back then, but could never confirm that it actually happened. Some of those legends were so widespread that they take on a life of their own, and people still believe it and mention it even today. Victrolaman
